What Are the Marriott Silver Elite Benefits?

Marriott Silver elite status is the bottom-tier elite status offered by Marriott. There’s not a whole to Marriott Silver to know about but since this is a frequently obtained status, it’s good to know what it offers. So here’s the rundown.

How to earn Marriott Silver elite status

To achieve or renew Marriott elite status the following number of personal nights must be earned through Rewarding Events or stayed at participating locations between January 1 and December 31 of any given year:

  • Silver elite status:10 to 49 nights
  • Gold elite status: 50 to 74 nights
  • Platinum elite status: 75 or more nights

(Reward certificate stays do count toward Elite night credit).

As you can see, Marriott Silver elite status only requires 10 nights to achieve which is pretty doable.

However, you can also obtain Silver via credit cards.

Marriott Rewards credit card

The Marriott Rewards credit card offers automatic Marriott Silver status upon being approved. You can then earn Marriott Gold elite status by spending $50,000 in a year (which is not usually worth it considering other options for achieving Gold).

Ritz-Carlton Rewards credit card

The Ritz-Carlton Rewards credit card offers automatic Marriott Silver status after your first anniversary. It gives you Marriott Gold status the first year and then you have to spend $10,000 on the card after that to maintain Gold.

The benefits of Marriott Silver elite status

If you look at the chart below, you’ll notice that there isn’t a lot that distinguished Marriott Silver status from the basic Rewards Member tier. As a Silver elite member, you’re not entitled to free breakfasts, lounge access, or even late check out. The only benefit that’s unique is that you’ll get bonus points for your stays.

20% Bonus on Marriott Rewards Points

  • Marriott Silver elite members are credited with a 20% bonus on base points earned during stays.

At a value of .8 cents per point, Silver status earns 9.6% back, which is actually the best for a major, low-tier elite level. Out of all of major hotel programs, Marriott is among the most rewarding in terms of the value you receive back in the form of reward points for your bookings.

So while there aren’t many unique perks to get excited about, this one is actually pretty strong.

The benefits below are also provided to Marriott Silver members though note that many of them are also available to basic Marriott Rewards members.

5th redemption night free

  • Book 5 consecutive nights and the 5th night is free (this perk is available to all Marriott status levels but is worth mentioning).

Free standard in-room Wi-Fi

All Marriott Rewards® members enjoy free in-room Wi-Fi when they book through Marriott. While this is not unique to Silver member, it’s nice that you’re entitled to free wi-fi — just remember that you need to book through Marriott to get this benefit (at least according to the terms).

Priority Late Checkout

Marriott Silver elite status doesn’t provide you with guaranteed late checkout like you get with Gold or Platinum, but you can still get it based on availability.

Ultimate Reservation Guarantee

If Marriott is unable to honor your reservation, they will pay for you to stay at a nearby hotel they will even compensate you for the inconvenience. You can read more about this perk here.

Marriott Gift Shop Discount

You’re entitled to a a 10% discount at participating Marriott-operated and managed gift shops.

Weekend Rate Discount

Get a 10% discount on the regular room rate for Friday and Saturday night stays at participating Courtyard by Marriott and SpringHill Suites by Marriott locations. This discount can come in handy if you ever want to do a Marriott status challenge sand save on the costs.

Marriott Silver elite upgrades?

Upgrades are only explicitly provided as a perk to Gold and Platinum members but that doesn’t mean that you won’t ever get one. Since Silver is the bottom of the elite totem pole, you’ll want to ask for upgrades, though. In fact, I would probably even email the property ahead of time to inquire about availability-based upgrades if I were really trying to get an upgrade.

Final word word on Marriott Silver

Overall, Marriott Silver elite status doesn’t have a whole to offer other than a great bonus on points earned for stays. If you really want to experience elite benefits like free breakfasts, lounge access, and a better shot at upgrades, look into doing a status challenge to Gold. You will probably have to complete about 6 stays to complete the status challenge but that’s not too bad. You can read about my own experience with doing a status challenge here.
