One of the newest trends we have seen over the past couple of years is credit cards offering cell phone protection or cell phone “insurance.”

This benefit can help you feel better about repairing or replacing a cell phone since the vast majority of your expenses can be covered after you pay a small deductible.

But how exactly does this perk work and what type of coverage can you get with American Express? In this article, I will break it all down for you.

What is Amex Cell Phone Protection?

Amex cell phone protection will cover you if your cell phone is stolen or damaged, subject to certain limitations and restrictions. It is definitely one of the stronger cell phone protections when compared to other credit cards.

Amex cards with cell phone protection

The major drawback to this benefit is that it only applies to select premium American Express cards.

This means that in order to take advantage of this protection you are going to have to cough up a pretty high annual fee ($250+).

Popular American Express cards that come with cell phone protection include:

Notably missing is the Amex Gold Card.

Other Amex cards with coverage include the following:

  • Centurion Card from American Express
  • Business Centurion Card from American Express
  • The American Express Platinum Card for Schwab
  • The Platinum Card from American Express for Goldman Sachs
  • The Platinum Card from American Express for Morgan Stanley
  • The Platinum Card from American Express for Ameriprise Financial

All of the cards above come with so many benefits that it is often easy to justify their higher annual fee. Still, it is worth noting that there are some non-Amex cards with no annual fee that still provide cell phone protection.

Triggering coverage

Coverage for this benefit is not automatically activated.

Coverage is only activated when your cell phone is listed on a wireless bill and the prior month’s wireless bill was paid entirely by an eligible card.

Notice that it states that the bill must be paid entirely by an American Express card. If you are splitting up your bill this means that you could invalidate your coverage.

You are eligible for coverage the first day of the calendar month following the payment of your Eligible Cellular Wireless Telephone bill using your card.

Cell phone coverage limits

You can be reimbursed for the cost to repair or replace your stolen or damaged cell phone up to a maximum of $800 per claim. A common limit for your claim amount is $600 so this is better than your average claim amount.

You are also limited to two claims per 12 month period.

That means that you are effectively limited to $1,600 in coverage per year. That is a pretty competitive annual limit on coverage but some cards may offer a slightly higher annual coverage limit at around $1,800.

Deductible

There is a $50 deductible that will apply to each approved claim.

That compares pretty favorably to the Chase Ink Business Preferred which has a deductible of $100.

Some cards have a deductible as low as $25 such as those offered by Wells Fargo so it is possible to get a better deductible. Just note that some of those Wells Fargo cards may have lower claim limits such as $600 per claim.

Bonus points

One weakness to the cell phone protection is that it is not attached to any cards that earn extra points on cell phone bills.

Compare that to a card like the Chase Ink Business Preferred which earns 3X on phone bills.

But this isn’t a huge loss and I’ll show you why.

Let’s say your cell phone bill was $300 per month. That comes out to $3,600 per year. By earning 3X on your bill you would be earning 7,200 more points every year than a card that earns just 1X.

At a valuation of 1.73 cents per point, 7,200 points comes out to about $125 in value.

The coverage limit for the Platinum Card is $200 higher than the Chase Ink Business Preferred.

So it would be a matter of getting $600 in coverage plus $125 in rewards versus getting $800 in coverage plus ~$40 in rewards. If you actually have to use the benefit the latter scenario is obviously the better one.

Of course, if you don’t use the benefit then you would be losing out on all of those extra points.

The other reason why it is not a major deal is that American Express often comes out with Amex Offers that provide you with a discount on your phone bill. So in some cases the value you lose in earning extra points can be outweighed by the Amex Offer savings.

Exclusions

Just like other cell phone protection benefits, you will find a lot of items excluded from coverage.

Accessories

Accessories other than the standard battery and standard antenna are not included.

Resale or for professional commercial use

If you purchased the cell phone for resale or for professional or commercial use then you may not get coverage but this only applies to consumer card accounts.

Lost or mysterious disappearances

This is one of the most important terms to be aware of.

Basically, if your cell phone is not stolen but goes missing, chances are you will not get coverage because it will be deemed lost.

This is why it helps to file a report if your phone is ever stolen because you will have documented evidence of the event that cannot be attributed to a “mysterious disappearance.”

Common carrier

If your phone was under the care of a common carrier such as the United States Postal Service or an airplane you may not get coverage.

If your phone has been rented, least, or borrowed or received as part of a prepaid plan you will not qualify for coverage.

Cosmetic damage

Cosmetic damage is superficial abrasions or scuffs to the phone that do not impact its ability to make or receive phone calls. These are not covered but note that cracked screens are covered.

In some cases, it might be a little bit of a gray area when trying to decide if you are dealing with cosmetic damage or something that truly interferes with the ability to use the phone.

In these instances, you might have to plead your case.

Specific acts

Damage resulting from certain acts such as abuse, intentional acts, fraud, etc. will exclude coverage.

Is it worth it?

The cell phone protection provided by American Express is extremely competitive compared to other products.

First, the $50 deductible is on the lower side as some other leading credit cards would require a $100 deductible.

The maximum claim of $800 is not the highest that you can find but it is higher than the common $600 limit found on many other cards.

Getting limited to two claims per 12 month period is pretty standard and hopefully you will not have to go beyond that each year. So overall I would have to say that the cell phone protection is very strong with American Express.

How to file a claim

To begin the process of filing a claim, call 1-833-784-1467.

You should know that you must file your claim within 90 days of the loss or as soon as reasonably possible. If you wait too long to file your claim it is possible that the claim may not be honored.

After you have filed your claim, you will be provided with the necessary instructions for filing your proof of loss.

This proof of loss must be submitted to a benefit administrator within 120 days of the loss.

Required documentation may include but is not limited to the following:

  • Your account statement reflecting the monthly phone payments for the month preceding the date the phone was stolen or suffered damage;
  • A copy of your current phone service provider’s billing statement;
  • Copy of the original phone purchase receipt
  • Copy of the insurance claim to the Eligible Person’s homeowner’s, renter’s or personal automobile insurance or
  • Any applicable cellular telephone insurance, or in the event that the claim amount is less than the Eligible Person’s deductible, a copy of the policy’s declarations page;
  • If a claim is due to damage, a copy of the repair estimate and photos of the damage;
  • If the claim is due to theft, a copy of the police report filed within 48 hours of the theft; and
  • Any other documentation or information reasonably requested by us to support the claim.

What is the Chase Ink Business Preferred Cell Phone Protection?

The Chase Ink Business Preferred cell phone protection will protect you against damage, theft, or involuntary and accidental parting of your cell phone when you use your Chase Ink Preferred to pay your phone bill.

What does “involuntary and accidental parting” mean?

Involuntary and accidental parting with property means “the unintended separation from an item of personal property in which the item’s location is known but recovery is impractical to complete.”

So for example if you unintentionally drop your phone in the ocean then you might have grounds for coverage since you know it’s in the ocean but draining the ocean and/or going on a scuba mission to recover your phone is pretty impractical.

However, if you just left your phone sitting out somewhere but can’t remember, your phone could be anywhere so you can’t argue that you know its location.

So the take-a-way is that lost phones are not covered. I think there’s definitely some grey area in the language regarding practical recovery and some benefit services love to fall back on grey areas in their terms to deny coverage.

Thus, be prepared to plead your case if you’re going to argue recovery of your phone is “impractical.”

$100 deductible

The protection requires a $100 deductible per claim and allows a maximum of 3 claims per 12 month period. You will receive no more than the purchase price less your $100 deductible. The maximum coverage limit is $600 per claim and $1,800 dollars per 12 month period.

Practically speaking, this means you’re able to get up to $500 worth of free credit towards repairs or replacements per claim and up to $1,500 per year.

The $100 deductible is a bit of a bummer for a couple of reasons. For one, if it’s just your screen that needs fixing, you can often find kiosks in shopping malls or online vendors that can fix it for under $100.

It’s also a bit of a bummer because there are other cards that offer $25 deductibles for similar coverage like the Wells Fargo Cash Wise.

But even with that limitation, the protection can still be very worthwhile.

Chase Ink Preferred Cell Phone Protection

How the cell phone protection coverage works

To be eligible for the cell phone insurance perk you must charge your monthly cellular wireless telephone bills to your Chase Ink Preferred card.

This is key to remember — just being a Chase Ink Preferred cardmember is not enough to kick in the cell phone protection perk. Also, just because you purchased your phone with the Chase Ink Preferred that does not mean that you’ll get coverage.

When the cell phone protection begins

The cellular telephone protection begins the day following your cellular wireless telephone bill payment and remains in effect until the last day of the calendar month following the payment. Coverage is suspended if no payment is made on your eligible card.

This is another key thing to consider.

The cell phone insurance does not kick in until “the day following your cellular wireless telephone bill payment.” So until you actually make a payment on your cell phone bill, you are not covered by the Chase Ink Preferred.

To illustrate, say you get a new cell phone on March 15, 2019 but you don’t make a payment until March 31, 2019. This means that the protection won’t apply to any damage that occurs in the month of March 2019.

When the cell phone protection ends

Also, if you ever fail to make a payment or switch up your payment then you will eventually lose the protection. In those situations, the coverage would end the last day of the calendar month following the payment.

Coverage is secondary

The cell phone protection is supplemental to cellular wireless telephone insurance programs, homeowner’s, renter’s, automobile, or employer’s insurance policies.

What this means is that if you have cell phone insurance like that offered by Verizon, this benefit only kicks in when that coverage has been exhausted.

What is not covered?

There’s a pretty extensive list of items that are not covered.

But I’ll focus on three areas I think are pretty important.

“Mysteriously disappear”

Phones that are lost or “mysteriously disappear” will not be covered. Mysterious disappearance” means the “vanishing of an item in an unexplained manner where there is absence of evidence of a wrongful act by a person or persons.”

Again, I think there’s a lot of room for interpretation with this provision. I take it to mean that if you claim your phone was stolen from your car but there’s not a police report or any supporting documentation, that probably falls under “mysteriously disappeared.”

Pre-paid phones

You should know that phones that have been rented, leased, borrowed or that are a part of a pre-paid wireless service plan or “pay as you go” type service plan are not eligible.

Phones not purchased from authorized dealers

Cell phones not purchased from a cellular service provider’s retail or Internet store, (for example: Verizon Wireless, Sprint Wireless, etc.) or from an authorized cellular phone retailer are not eligible.

Additional exclusions

The following items are also excluded:

  • Phone accessories
  • Phones purchased for resale.
  • Phones under the care and control of a common carrier
  • Phones stolen from baggage unless hand-carried and under your supervision
  • Cosmetic damage to the phone that does not impact the functionalities of the phone.
  • Damage or theft resulting from abuse, intentional acts, fraud, illegal activities, etc.
  • Damage or theft resulting from mis-delivery or voluntary parting with the cellular wireless telephone.

How do I file a claim?

It’s really important to contact the Benefit Administrator at 888-320-9956 within 60 days of damage, theft or involuntary and accidental parting. If you wait any longer than that, your claim may be denied.

The Benefit Administrator representative will ask you some preliminary questions and send you a claim form or you can file your claim online.

I recommend filing a claim online because it’ usually much easier. You’ll go to the Card Benefit Services website to file online.

This claim form must be completed, signed, and returned with all the requested documentation within 90 days from the date of the incident, or your claim might be denied.

What do I need to submit with my claim?

Just like with any other credit card protection, you need to do your best to keep records of every document related to the benefit you’re seeking.

Standard documents needed

The documents that you’ll need to submit a claim may include:

  • Your completed and signed claim form.
  • Copies of your card statement showing the entire monthly cell phone payment(s) preceding the date of damage, theft or involuntary and accidental parting.
  • A copy of your cell phone bill that corresponds with the above card statement.
  • A copy of your cell phone provider’s wireless device page or other sufficient proof, as determined in the Benefit Administrator’s sole discretion, of the cellular wireless telephone model currently linked to Your cellular wireless telephone account.
  • If the claim is due to theft or criminal action, a copy of the police report or incident report filed within 48 hours of the occurrence.

If the claim is due to damage, a copy of an insurance claim or other report as the Benefit Administrator, in its sole discretion, deems necessary to determine eligibility for coverage.

Additional possible documents needed

In addition the Benefit Administrator may in its sole discretion require:

  • (a) An itemized estimate of repair from an authorized repair facility
  • (b) The cell phone in question
  • (c) an itemized store receipt for the replacement cell phones showing the purchase was made at an authorized cellular service provider’s retail or Internet store.

As you can see, the Benefit Administrator is going to want to see documents to back up everything. It shouldn’t be difficult for you to retrieve most of these items online but when it comes to itemized receipts or even the cell phone itself, you need to make sure you’re prepared to hand those over if needed.

How will I be reimbursed if my claim is approved?

Depending on the nature and circumstances of the incident, the Benefit Administrator, at its sole discretion, may choose to repair or replace the cellular wireless telephone or reimburse the Cardholder for the lesser of:

  • a) $600 dollars excess of the $100.00 deductible; or
  • b) the current suggested retail price of a replacement cellular wireless telephone of like kind and quality, excluding taxes, delivery and transportation charges, and any fees associated with the cellular wireless telephone service provider, less the $100.00 deductible.

Under normal circumstances, reimbursement will take place within ten (10) business days of receipt and approval of claim form and all required documents.

Additional Provisions for Cellular Telephone Protection:

This protection provides benefits that only apply to the cardholder and eligible lines listed on the most recent cellular provider’s monthly billing statement for the billing cycle prior to when the incident occurred.

Many state that the protections only apply to employees on the monthly billing statement but the terms and conditions don’t clarify that.

Here are some additional restrictions:

  • If You make any claim knowing it to be false or fraudulent in any respect including, but not limited to, the cost of repair services, no coverage shall exist for such claim and the Cellular Telephone Protection benefit may be canceled.
  • Once you report an occurrence of the incident, a claim file will be opened and shall remain open for six months from the date of the incident. No payment will be made on a claim that is not completely substantiated in the manner required by the Benefit Administrator within six months of the date of the incident.

Other cards that provide cell phone insurance

There are a few other credit cards that provide this benefit but they are personal credit cards.

Wells Fargo credit cards

Wells Fargo has some great rewards credit cards that I think a lot of people sleep on. Several of these cards like the Well Fargo Propel and the Cash Wise card come with cell phone protection up to a maximum benefit limit of $600 per claim and $1,200 per 12 month period.

But what makes them stand out is that the deductible is only $25.

Barclays Uber

The Barclays Uber card is one of the best cash back credit cards and arguably the best card for dining since it earns a whopping 4% back!

Other cards

A few other cards also offer cell phone protection including the Absolute Rewards card from First National Bank of Omaha and the Platinum Visa from U.S. Bank.

What is Wells Fargo phone insurance?

Wells Fargo phone insurance is offered by certain credit cards and it will protect you up to $600 protection (subject to a $25 deductible) against damage or theft.

The low $25 deductible is a great deal since some other cell phone protection policies require you to put down $100. Moreover, you can get this benefit with credit cards that come with no annual fee, making it easier than ever to save on phone replacements and repairs.

The amount of coverage you’ll receive depends on the level of damage done to your mobile device. If they can repair the phone, you’ll typically be limited to the cost of the repair but if it needs to be replaced you’ll be limited to the value of the phone.

Keep in mind that regardless of the value of the damage or repairs, you’ll be limited to a maximum benefit limit of $600 per claim and $1,200 per 12 month period. 

How to get coverage

The Wells Fargo phone insurance is only available when cell phone bills are paid from your Wells Fargo Consumer Credit Card.

I don’t usually advocate for auto-pay but when it comes to cell phone protection, I think it usually makes sense just to go with auto-pay to ensure that you’ll be protected.

Note: this coverage does not apply if the cell phone bill is paid from a Wells Fargo Debit Card, Wells Fargo Business Credit Card, Wells Fargo Commercial Card or from the card that is linked to a Line of Credit. This is a big difference from the Chase Ink Preferred which offers cell phone protection as a Chase business credit card.

Pre-paid plans don’t get coverage

Coverage does not apply to cell phones that are rented, borrowed, or received as part of a prepaid plan. Electronic failure or issues related to the software of the device are not covered.

When does the protection begin?

The coverage begins the first day of the calendar month following your first cell phone billing on your Wells Fargo Consumer Credit Card, and remains in effect when you continue to charge your total monthly cell phone bill to your Wells Fargo Consumer Credit Card.

If you fail to make a Cellular Wireless Telephone bill payment in a particular month, the protection is suspended until the first day of the calendar month following the date of any future bill payment with an eligible Wells Fargo credit card while the Cellular Telephone Protection Benefit continues to be offered.

Is the coverage primary?

This coverage is not primary. Instead, this is supplemental coverage not otherwise covered by another insurance policy (for example, cell phone insurance programs, or your homeowner’s, renter’s, automobile, or employer’s insurance policies) and may be applied after all other insurance.

So let’s say you have $1,000 worth of damage and your renter’s insurance will cover you for $500. That means that you should still be able to get the remaining $500 covered with the Wells Fargo benefit, subject to the $25 deductible.

Does Wells Fargo phone insurance cover lost phones?

One of the biggest questions about this coverage is whether or not this protection will kick in if you lost your cell phone. Unfortunately, this benefit does not cover cell phones that are lost (i.e. disappear without explanation).

If you can’t provide any evidence or documentation that your phone was stolen or damaged, then there’s a chance that they might decide that it looks like your phone has “mysteriously disappeared” without explanation and you might not get coverage.

“Mysterious disappearance” means the vanishing of an item in an unexplained manner where there is absence of evidence of a wrongful act by a person or persons. So this means that you need to make sure you collect all the evidence possible to support your claim.

How to file a Wells Fargo phone insurance claim

If you need to file a cliam the first thing you should do is call the benefit administrator number at 866-804-4770 (or collect at 303- 967-1096)

Make sure that you call within 60 days of damage or theft or your claim may be denied.

The benefit administrator representative will ask you for some preliminary claim information and then they will send you a claim form. Note that this claim form must be completed, signed, and returned with all the requested documentation within 90 days from the date of damage

What documents do I need?

Here are the documents that you’ll be required to show if you need to file a claim:

  • Your completed and signed claim form.
  • Copies of Your card statement reflecting monthly payments for the month preceding the date of damage or theft.
  • A copy of Your current wireless service provider billing statement.
  • A document from the phone provider or other sufficient proof, as determined by the benefit administrator, that the telephone you are claiming is currently linked to your account (you can often find this online when you log-in to your cell phone provider).
  • If the claim is due to theft or criminal action, a copy of the police report.

But note that you might need to send in additional documentation, such as:

  • an itemized estimate of repair from an authorized Cellular Telephone repair facility or
  • the damaged cell phone (so don’t lost the phone or throw it away)
  • an itemized store receipt for the replacement Cellular Wireless Telephone showing the purchase was made at a cellular service provider’s retail or Internet store (for example Verizon Wireless, Sprint Wireless, etc.)
  • Documentation (if available) of any other settlement of the claim.

All claims must be fully substantiated as to the time, place, cause, and purchase price of the Cellular Wireless Telephone, so this means that you need to do your best to preserve all receipts and other related documents so that you have a smooth experience.

In order to get coverage, you need to have damage that impacts the phone’s ability to make or receive phone calls. So just because your device gets a bit scratched up, that does not mean that you’ll be able to receive coverage.

How long will it take to be reimbursed?

Wells Fargo notes that under normal circumstances, reimbursement will take place within 10 business days of receipt and approval of claim form and all required documents.

Does it cover smart phones like iPhones?

Yes, as long as you meet all of the eligibility requirements your smart phone should be covered whether it’s Apple, Samsung, etc.
