One of the biggest worries about the upcoming stimulus package is what will happen for the next couple of months if the Democrats take over after the upcoming election.
Trump has claimed that if he wins he will quickly roll out with another relief package.
“After the election, we will get the best stimulus package you have ever seen,” Trump said on Tuesday.
But if Trump loses, this would result in a lame duck session and those type of sessions are notoriously unproductive.
Some experts have predicted that Democrats would hold off until after inauguration day to get a deal done and more stimulus checks sent out. It’s expected that this deal would be much bigger than any deal that Republicans would approve so the longer wait could very well be worth it for many people.
Just how big would it be? It’s not exactly clear but it wouldn’t surprise me to see it around or even above $2.2 trillion which is a figure Republicans refused to get on board with.
If Democrats do wait until after inauguration day, that would put a timeline for more aid going out to Americans around sometime in February or possibly even March. While a much larger relief package is certainly appealing, waiting that long for more direct payments could be catastrophic for a lot of Americans.
But if Democrats do take over after these elections, we may not have to wait so long for stimulus relief.
House speaker Nancy Pelosi stated today that if Joe Biden is elected president they would push to get something done before he goes into office.
“We want to have the cleanest slate as possible going into January,” Pelosi said, according to Politico’s Sarah Ferris.
This is really encouraging to hear and should give us some hope that meaningful actions will be taken in the months of November and December to get something done.
I’m still not sure I would put a lot of faith in progress getting done before inauguration day if Trump loses though.
With the way that the stimulus negotiations fell apart multiple times over the span of months it just doesn’t seem like Republicans would be feeling a sense of urgency to work with Democrats.
