Allegiant Air Baggage Fees Guide (Carry-on, Checked, Military) [2023]

With ticket prices being as low as they are today, baggage fees and allowances are more of a reality. Allegiant Air is like any other budget carrier and charges each passenger to bring on a carry-on and checked bag with different allowances than other airlines.

In this article, I will explain baggage allowances, baggage fees when you fly, military baggage benefits, sporting equipment allowances, and how to report your baggage lost or damaged for Allegiant Air.

What are Allegiant Air’s baggage fees?

Allegiant is one of the few ultra-low-cost carriers (ULCC) that operate domestically within the USA. That means, you only get a personal item for free while carry-on and checked baggage are subject to fees per segment.

For carry-ons, you can expect to pay $10 to $75 and for checked baggage you can expect to pay $20 to $50.

Below, I go into detail on Allegiant’s baggage fees and allowances.

How can I avoid baggage fees of Allegiant?

Allegiant isn’t Southwest with its free baggage. In fact, their baggage fees range in price resulting in cheap to expensive. Luckily, if you’re a savvy traveler, you can avoid those pesky fees.

Credit Cards

Since Allegiant has no other option for fares and no other loyalty program to waive baggage fees. Your only choice to eliminate or reduce the cost of baggage fees is utilizing a credit card.

Tip: Use a great travel rewards credit card like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card to offset your baggage fees. It earns 2% cash back on all purchases toward travel, and the points can be used to cover virtually any travel purchase.

Allegiant Air personal item and carry-on restrictions

Every passenger can bring on a personal item for free, but carry-ons aren’t flying for free.

Personal item

You can bring one personal item onboard and can be anything that can go under the seat in front of you. Personal items must not exceed:

  • 8 in. x 14 in. x 18 in. (20 cm x 35 cm x 45 cm) maximum

As long as it fits under the seat in front of you while meeting the requirements, you can bring it for free. Examples of a personal item would be a briefcase, purse, backpack, food container, and a camera bag.

Carry-on

There’s no such thing as carry-on baggage flying for free when flying Allegiant. That means you will be subject to fees at booking, before check-in, or at the airport for carry-on baggage. If you decide to have a carry-on bag with you, the carry-on must not exceed:

  • 10 in. x 16 in. x 22 in. (25 cm x 40 cm x 55 cm) maximum

A roll-aboard bag, garment bag, or tote bag, not to exceed size requirements and must fit in the overhead bin.

Example of a personal item (briefcase) and a carry-on bag (hard shell roller bag)

Liquids

The same TSA standards apply to Allegiant flights arriving or departing from the US. You can review a list provided by the TSA of permitted and prohibited items which may be included in carry-on baggage including the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule.

If you don’t want to take out liquids, electronics, or take off your shoes, Pre-Check is a life saver for saving time and the hassle of security. Allegiant is one of the airlines that allows Pre-Check to their passengers. If you travel more than once or twice a year, Pre-Check can change the way you think about airport security when flying within the USA.

Allegiant baggage fees

Allegiant Air uses a variable baggage fee system, and it depends entirely on the route. That means, there will be cheaper routes and more expensive routes when it comes to carry-on and checked baggage fees.

Each fee is per segment, and you can use Allegiant’s baggage fee calculator here.

A sample route and date using Allegiant’s baggage fee calculator

Allegiant carry-on fees

Fees for carry-on baggage while flying Allegiant range from $10 to $75 per segment per bag, when you add the carry-on and depending on the route.

  • At booking: $10 to $20
  • Before check-in: $45
  • At the airport: $50
  • At the gate: $0 to $75

Knowing if you will need a carry-on or checked baggage before you book your flight is vital as the fees are expensive when adding baggage at the airport.

Allegiant checked baggage fees

Similar to carry-on baggage fees, Allegiant checked baggage fees range based on when you add the bag and the route.

  • At booking: $20 to $48
  • Before check-in: $45
  • At the airport: $50

Note, you can only check up to 4 bags with Allegiant. Each bag has to weigh 40 lbs (18 kg) or less and 80 in. (203 cm) in height + width + length maximum. I go into specifications and allowances below.

Sample route prices

Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Syracuse (SYR)

  • At booking: $36 carry-on, $39 checked
  • Before check-in: $45
  • At the airport: $50

Newark/New York (EWR) to Savannah (SAV)

  • At booking: $34 carry-on, $30 checked
  • Before check-in: $45
  • At the airport: $50

New Orleans (MSY) to Cincinnati (CVG)

  • At booking: $33 carry-on, $41 checked
  • Before check-in: $45
  • At the airport: $50

Orlando (SFB) to Tulsa (TUL)

  • At booking: $37 carry-on, $43 checked
  • Before check-in: $45
  • At the airport: $50

Flint (FNT) to Tampa/St. Pete (PIE)

  • At booking: $38 carry-on, $44 checked
  • Before check-in: $45
  • At the airport: $50

Allegiant Air checked baggage allowance

The allowance with Allegiant Air checked baggage is:

  • 50 lbs (22 kg) and 80 in. (203 cm) in total size

If your checked baggage exceeds that above limitation, you will be subject to one or more excess checked baggage fee(s).

Allegiant Air excess checked baggage fees

If your baggage exceeds 50 lbs and/or 80 in. in total size, you will have to pay excess checked baggage fees.

  • Overweight fee 51 lbs to 70 lb (23.1 kg to 31.8 kg): $50
  • Overweight fee 71 lbs to 100 lb (32.2 kg to 45.4 kg): $75
  • Oversized fee: $75

These fees go on top of the regular checked baggage fees.

So, if your bag weighs more than 50 lbs, you will be subject to the baggage fees you paid at booking, before check-in, or at the airport and the excess checked baggage fee of $50. That means it can cost you more than $100 if you add checked baggage at the airport and it weighs more than 50 lbs.

Again, knowing if you need to check baggage or have a carry-on bag is key before you book. It can be cheaper to check two bags instead of paying the overweight fee on one bag.

Sports baggage on Allegiant flights

Sporting equipment is treated just as regular checked baggage with the same maximum weight and size requirements along with the same fees.

If you check sporting equipment like skis or a snowboard, as long as it weighs less than 40 lbs and smaller than 80 in. total in size, you won’t be subject to excess baggage fees. So, you will only have to pay the standard checked baggage fee that is shown above.

Some examples of sporting equipment are:

  • Bowling equipment
  • Golf equipment
  • Hockey stick and equipment
  • Shotgun, rifle, or handgun
  • Fishing equipment
  • Snow ski equipment
  • Water ski equipment
  • Skateboard
  • Archery equipment
  • Scuba equipment

To learn more about checked sporting equipment, please refer to Allegiant’s FAQ at the bottom of the page explaining how to check sporting equipment.

When can I check-in bags for Allegiant Air?

Allegiant recommends checking in your baggage as early as two hours before the departure time.

If you want to arrive earlier, you can check-in your baggage up to three hours before departure as most airport check-in counters will be open at that time.

Allegiant Air pet policy

Allegiant allows you to travel with a domesticated dog or cat in a carrier that fits under the seat.

The carrier cannot be any bigger than 9 in. x 16 in. x 19 in. and no more than two animals in one carrier. Each passenger can have a maximum of one carrier.

To add on a pet, it will cost you $50 per segment, and you must contact Allegiant at 1 (702) 505-8888

Note: Allegiant doesn’t allow animals to be transported in the cargo hold.

Allegiant VS Frontier and Spirit Airlines baggage fees

When it comes to ULCC, Spirit and Frontier lead the pack with Allegiant the little brother that is sometimes forgotten. However, you might be surprised that Allegiant is possibly cheaper in fees compared to his older brothers.

When comparing the three airlines for carry-on baggage fees, you will find that Allegiant, for the most part, comes out cheaper than the others. We used the Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Syracuse (SYR) route for this example.

AllegiantFrontierSpirit
At booking$36$53$47
Before check-in$45$65 (web check-in $71)$55
At the airport$50$79$79

For checked baggage, Allegiant is the same price for the first bag at booking, but if you’re checking in more than one checked bag, you will come out on top with Allegiant as Allegiant doesn’t charge a different amount for 2nd, 3rd, or 4th checked bag.

AllegiantFrontierSpirit
At booking$41$56 (2nd bag $61; 3+ bags $85)$35 (2nd bag $55; 3+ bags $85)
Before check-in$45$60 (2nd bag $65; 3+ bags $85)$49 (2nd bag $69; 3+ bags $95)
At the airport$50$79 (2nd bag $89; 3+ bags $95)$79 (2nd bag $89; 3+ bags $100)

And remember, this was just one sample route we used for Allegiant. There are other routes that are cheaper in baggage fees. Plus there are other ways for people to avoid or reduce Frontier and Spirit airlines baggage fees.

If you’re comparing all three airlines, I highly suggest you read up on our Spirit Airlines baggage fees and Frontier baggage fees articles.

Alaska will accept your checked bags at the airport from 4 hours before your flight time until approximately 1 hour before your flight time. View the ticket counter hours and specific Check-in cut-off time for your airport.

  • Calgary (YYC) can only accept bags two hours prior to departure.

Baggage for layovers

If your trip includes more than one flight on Alaska Airlines and or one of their airline partners, Alaska will check your bags to the final destination on your ticket as long as there are fewer than 12 hours between flights.

Lost or damaged baggage

If your bags are delayed at your arrival or if they are damaged, be sure to report the situation in person within 24 hours of arrival time.

If you fail to do that, you will likely be denied compensation.

If your bags are not at baggage claim within 20 minutes of your plane’s arrival at the gate, Alaska will offer you a $25 discount code for use on a future Alaska Airlines flight, or 2,500 Alaska bonus miles.

Contact Alaska within 2 hours of your flight’s arrival for your discount code or miles.

So keep that clock tickin’ as soon as you arrive.

Hawaiian Airlines Baggage Fees Guide (Checked, International, Military) [2023]

Hawaiian Airlines is Hawaii’s state carrier as they connect every island to the rest of the US and international destinations. Yet, being based out of Hawaii doesn’t make their baggage fees any cheaper than the rest of US carriers.

In this article, I’ll discuss the specific Hawaiian Airlines baggage restrictions and fees for carry-ons, checked bags, and international flights, while showing you some ways to avoid these fees.

I’ll also talk about special circumstances such as for overweight baggage, pet policies, and military privileges.

What are Hawaiian Airlines baggage fees?

For domestic flights Hawaiian Airlines charges $25 to $30 for the first bag and $35 to $40 for the second bag. Prices are lower for inter-island travel and more expensive for travel between the mainland and Hawaii.

Below I will go into details outlining the allowance and fees for both carry-on and checked baggage.

Can I avoid Hawaiian Airlines baggage fees?

You can avoid Hawaiian Airlines baggage fees in several ways.

Premier Club Membership

Premier Club is a unique way to get elite style benefits via a paid membership.

If you are a Premier Club member, you get benefits like two bags for free, better seat selection, Premier Club check-in, Premier Club Access, priority security lanes, and priority baggage handling. Here are the membership prices:

  • 1st membership annual fee: $299 or 40,000 HawaiianMiles
  • Renewing membership annual fee: $249.00 or 35,000 HawaiianMiles

This can be huge if you are a family flying domestic flights frequently saving money on bags and receiving priority services along with lounge access.

You could save up to $70 for two bags each way for flying domestic. You would just have to fly 5 flights between the Hawaiian islands and North America for the membership to pay for itself with free baggage.

Elite status

Hawaiian Airlines has 2 elite statuses called Pualani Elite status. Each one offers benefits like free baggage or priority services.

Pualani Gold

  • 30 segments or 20,000 flight miles
  • 2 bags for free

Pualani Platinum

  • 60 segments or 40,000 flight miles
  • 3 bags for free

As Hawaiian is not part of any alliance, you won’t be able to get free bags while having another airlines status.

With any airline loyalty program, elites are given special benefits as thanks. To some, benefits like priority services and lounge access are very valuable, but a free baggage allowance is just icing on the cake and can save money if you aren’t flying in the premium cabin.

Fare types

The only fare type that includes bags would be first class. No true economy fare. Thus, if you wanted bags included in your ticket price, you must be flying in first class.

International destinations

All classes and cabins on Hawaiian Airlines will receive a free baggage allowance for international destinations. Some destinations like Japan, Korea, and China will receive extra baggage allowance for premium cabins.

Credit Cards

Hawaiian has one co-branded credit card via a major nationwide bank, but they also have a few cards issued by a local Hawaiian bank. In this article, we will go over the Barclay issued Hawaiian card as more people can access this card.

Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard

  • 3x HawaiianMiles for purchases made directly with Hawaiian Airlines
  • 2x HawaiianMiles on gas, dining, and grocery store purchases
  • 1x HawaiianMiles on everything else
  • First checked bag free (only for cardmember)
  • Share Miles without fee
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • $99 annual fee (waived the first year)

This card has two unique features for frequent Hawaiian travelers, Share Miles without a fee and first checked bag is free. Those two features can be very unique in their own right.

Share Miles is a program where you can transfer miles to another person, friend or family member, without a fee. That means it’s easier to combine miles for an aspirational award.

The first checked bag is free when holding this card for the primary cardholder.

Hawaiian Airlines personal item and carry-on restrictions

No matter what seat you are sitting in, you are allowed one free personal item and one free carry-on bag.

Personal item

You can bring one personal item for free on any Hawaiian Airlines flight in any cabin.

Surprisingly Hawaiian Airlines doesn’t give any dimensions for maximum personal item size, but they have an official rule called Rule 17.A.2 for personal items.

It states:

“Your personal item must be small enough to fit safely under the seat in front of you.”

The industry standard for maximum dimensions for a bag to fit under the seat in front of you would be: 18 x 14 x 8 inches. Some examples of personal items would be a purse, briefcase, laptop computer, or small backpack.

Carry-on

You can bring one carry-on bag for free on any Hawaiian Airlines flight in any cabin.

  • 45 linear inches max (must fit in the overhead bin or under your seat in front of you)
  • 22 x 14 x 9 inches
  • 25 lbs max

Hawaiian Airlines allows soft-sided garment bags or other large objects without any max size, but subject to space availability.

For your carry-on item, you can bring a suitcase, bag, garment bag, carrycot, pushchair or child seat for infants, and any required mobility aids, such as a wheelchair. Some items will be gate checked for free. As long as it doesn’t exceed the dimensions above, you will be fine.

Musical instruments are also considered a carry-on item and must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you, no matter what size.

Personal item and carry-on bag

Liquids

The same TSA standards apply to Hawaiian Airlines flights operating within the US, arriving, and departing from the US. You can review a list provided by the TSA of permitted and prohibited items which may be included in carry-on baggage including the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule.

Hawaiian Airlines checked baggage fees

The prices below are for one-way Hawaiian Airlines flights, not roundtrip, and for bags that do not exceed 62 in (157 cm) in overall dimensions.

Here are all the fees for all the destinations and regions below:

Neighbor IslandNorth AmericaInternational and First Class
1st bag$25$30Free
2nd bag$35$40Free
3+ bag$50$100$150

Tip: When flying inter-island, the price difference between economy and first class is often pretty small. If you’re checking multiple bags it could actually be better to just book a first class ticket.

Out of all the US carriers, Hawaiian is one of the best when it comes to the least cumbersome fee structure to the destinations they fly. Of course, it’s not Southwest simplicity, but Hawaiian at least doesn’t confuse passengers as much as other airlines like AA.

Remember, if you have status, you don’t have to pay these fees, even when you are flying on a Basic Economy ticket.

If you want all the tips on how to deal with checked baggage and how to avoid fees, be sure to check out the ultimate guide to checked luggage here.

Hawaiian Airlines checked baggage size allowance

Hawaiian Airlines checked bags must not exceed 62″ in overall dimensions and exceed 50 lbs if you are flying main cabin or premium cabin (business/first class).

That might catch you off guard because usually premium cabins allow you more weight with your checked bags but not in this case!

At least not on domestic flights.

For flights to/from Australia and New Zealand and you’re seated in the main cabin or business class, bags can be up to 70 lbs in max weight. For flights to/from Japan and Korea and you’re seated in business class, bags can be up to 70 lbs in max weight.

Hawaiian Airlines excess checked baggage fee

Hawaiian Airlines overweight bags and/or bags that exceed the dimensions will receive an extra fee, as explained below.

Oversize bags

Bags flying on Hawaiian Airlines larger than 62 inches overall dimensions will have an oversize fee.

Hawaiian Airlines won’t accept checked bags over 80 inches overall dimensions. Prices below are for each way that the bag is between the overall dimensions of 62-80 inches.

  • Neighbor Island: $35
  • North America: $100
  • International: $150

Overweight bags

The exact amount you will be charged for overweight bags depends on exactly how much weight you are over and your destination.

Hawaiian Airlines won’t accept checked bags over 100 lbs.

51-70 lbs71-100 lbs
Neighbor Island$35$70
North America$50$200
Australia or New Zealand$0Not accepted
Japan or Korea$50 (Business Class: $0)$400
Pago Pago$50$400
Papeete$50Not accepted

Remember these fees will go on top of the regular checked luggage fees.

If you want all the tips on how to deal with checked baggage and how to avoid fees, be sure to check out the ultimate guide to checked luggage here.

Hawaiian Airlines sport baggage

Sport bags or equipment are considered “special items” on Hawaiian Airlines. Some are exempt from the allowance stated above, but most will have to comply with the rules or have fees to be checked.

Rule 18.D explain special items with the most up-to-date information from Hawaiian Airlines.

  • Antlers
  • Archery
  • Baseball bats
  • Bicycle
  • Bowling
  • Camping equipment
  • Curling equipment
  • Fencing equipment
  • Fishing
  • Golf clubs
  • Hang gliders
  • Hockey, cricket and lacrosse equipment
  • Javelin and pole vault
  • Oars and paddles
  • Parachute
  • Scuba gear (with tanks)
  • Scuba gear (without tanks)
  • Shooting equipment
  • Skateboards
  • Skis (snow/water) and snowboards
  • Watersports boards
  • Tennis, badminton, squash, or racquetball
  • Windsurf or kitesurfs

How to check sports baggage for Hawaiian Airlines flights

After verifying Rule 18.D special items, aka sports baggage, you can either check your sporting equipment normally at the airport just as you would any other bag.

As some sporting equipment is big and bulky, aka oversized, it’s best to arrive at the airport earlier than you might would with normal checked luggage as oversized luggage can take a few extra minutes to check.

Hawaiian Airlines military baggage policy

Hawaiian Airlines allows active-duty military personnel and dependents traveling on orders to get 5 checked bags for free, up to 70 lbs and 80 linear inches.

Dependents traveling without an active duty military family member must present the orders at check-in. While the military personnel must show a valid active-duty military ID.

Traveling on leisure, you are able to check 2 bags for free, up to 50 lbs and 62 linear inches. For leisure travel, this benefit is only for the active military personnel and not for dependents. One must present an active duty military ID at check-in.

If you want to learn more about military benefits for airlines, I suggest reading our article.

When can I check-in my bags for Hawaiian Airlines?

Hawaiian Airlines check-in depends on your departure city and destination.

Minimum check-in time for Hawaiian Airlines

  • Neighbor Island flights: 30 minutes before scheduled departure
  • North America flights: 45 minutes before scheduled departure
  • International flights: 60 minutes before scheduled departure

The above times aren’t suggested times for checking into your flight. These are cutting it close and you still would have to get through security. I would suggest checking with the departure airport as each international airport is different.

Suggested check-in time for Hawaiian Airlines

  • Neighbor Island flights: 1.5 hours before scheduled departure
  • North America flights: 2.5 hours before scheduled departure
  • International flights: 3 hours before scheduled departure

I do think these suggested check-in times are pretty extreme, I personally like to arrive at the airport 2 hours before scheduled international departures if I don’t have any priority access. However, arriving earlier minimizes the risk of missing a flight. Especially as lines can be long for check-in…

Long check-in lines can happen for any airline, especially leisure heavy destinations like Hawaii.

As always, check the policies for the departure airport as some airports have different policies in foreign countries.

Hawaiian Airlines pet policy

For the pet lovers out there that want to travel with their pet on Hawaiian Airlines with limitations as I explained below.

Pets traveling Hawaiian Airlines in the cabin

  • Pets are only allowed to travel inter-island flights and flights leaving Hawaii.
  • No pets are allowed to travel on flights to Hawaii (service animals are the exception)
  • Animal health certificate must be obtained before departure from Hawaii
  • Pets are only allowed for domestic North American flights
  • One pet per passenger
  • Pets must be in an approved carrier able to fit under the seat in front of you
  • Pets aren’t allowed in first class
  • Pets aren’t allowed to fly into New York (JFK), Boston (BOS), Orlando (MCO) or Austin (AUS)

As you can see, these rules are strict. You can read the most up to date rules here, but the rules above are standard for Hawaii based travel as the state is strict about environment, diseases, and agriculture.

Fees for pets traveling in the cabin

Hawaiian Airlines fees for pets traveling inside the cabin are a reasonable $35 for inter-island Hawaii flights. For flights to North America, the fee is $125 for a pet.

Pets traveling Hawaiian Airlines as checked baggage

Similar to above, Hawaiian Airlines is strict about pets traveling as checked baggage. You must contact reservations 48 hours prior departure to add your pet as checked baggage. You can contact reservations at 1-800-367-5320

Fees for inter-island Hawaiian flights are $60 and $225 for North America flights. You can read more here.

What if my bags are lost or damaged on Hawaiian Airlines?

If your bags are lost or damaged make sure you report it to Hawaiian Airlines immediately. It is imperative to make a claim in person or online after the flight.

You can either go to baggage services at the airport or online. Please refer to this link.

What if I lost an item on Hawaiian Airlines?

It is best to find a Hawaiian Airlines representative at the airport before leaving. They could go back on the aircraft for you as federal regulations prohibit you from entering the aircraft again.

If want to file a lost and found report, you must contact the Central Baggage Service.

Otherwise, follow the steps here.

Final word

Hawaiian is a wonderful boutique full-service US-flagged carrier. It brings excitement to many as they take you to an amazingly beautiful destination like Hawaii or to a new one abroad.

However, as a carrier with baggage fees, it still will tack on fees for neighbor islands and North American flights, that can still be avoidable.

Southwest Baggage Fees Policy (Carry-on & Checked Allowance) [2023]

Southwest baggage fees (or really the lack thereof) are one of the biggest attractions to flying with Southwest. With each flight, it’s possible to save about $60 each way compared to other major US carriers.

So in addition to cheap fares, Southwest offers extra ways to save money on your air travel. Here’s everything you need to know about the Southwest baggage fees allowance for carry-on, personal items, checked bags, and everything in between.

One carry-on and one personal item

Southwest allows each passenger to bring one carry-on and one personal item.

Tip: Use the free app WalletFlo to help you travel the world for free by finding the best travel credit cards and promotions!

Carry-on

The carry-on bag dimensions are limited to 24 x 16 x 10 inches. If your carry-on does not fit the dimensions above, Southwest will be forced to check it at the gate.

Unlike other low-cost carriers like Frontier and Spirit Airlines, the carry-on is free.

Personal item

Personal items can be items like backpacks, purses, briefcases, cameras, food containers, or laptops (including the accompanying case). Learn more about personal items.

Your personal item must be stored under the seat in front of you and fit within the following dimensions: 16.25 x 13.5 x 8 inch. If you can’t fit your personal items beneath your seat, then you’ll be asked to store it in the overhead bin.

Exclusions

The following items are not considered to be carry-ons or personal items:

  • A child restraint device for a ticketed child with a reserved seat or when complimentary, available space exists.
  • Assistive/mobility devices for individuals with a disability. There is no limit to the number of assistive/mobility devices a Customer can bring onboard the aircraft.
  • Outer garments or other wearable articles of clothing.
  • Food for consumption during flight contained in disposable packaging.
  • Walking canes or umbrellas.
  • Read more about the Southwest carry-on policies here
Southwest baggage fees.

Two free checked bags

Southwest allows each passenger two free checked bags.

This is a very valuable perk to flying with Southwest and it is what helps to distinguish Southwest from other airlines like the major legacy carriers (United, Delta, American). Anytime you’re thinking about flying with another airline, you should consider how much that airline will charge you to check in your bags.

Here are some examples of what other airlines charge for domestic routes:

Keep in mind that you can often check in bags for free when you have certain co-branded airline credit cards.

As you can see, most airlines are going to charge you $60 for two checked bags for a one-way flight, or $120 for two checked bags on a roundtrip. So if you travel with a lot of luggage, you are saving over $100 each time you fly with Southwest instead of one of the other legacy carriers or low-cost airlines like Spirit.

If you want all the tips on how to deal with checked baggage, be sure to check out the ultimate guide to checked luggage here.

Checking in more than two bags with Southwest

For every pice of luggage that you check in over the two free bag allowance, you’ll have to pay $75 per item one-way. Note that these bags must be under the length and weight restrictions (discussed below) or you will be subject to additional fees.

Southwest baggage fees weight restrictions

While Southwest allows for two free checked bags, they have weight restrictions that you must abide by.

Overweight items from 51 to 100 pounds and oversized items in excess of 62 inches but not more than 80 inches will be accepted for a charge of $75.00 per item one-way. Only one $75.00 charge applies if the piece is both oversized and overweight, regardless of the weight as long as it does not exceed 100 lbs.

Excess baggage which is also overweight or oversized will be charged excess baggage plus the applicable oversize or overweight charge. So if you bring a third bag to check in and it weights 60 pounds, you’ll be paying $75 for the overweight charge + $75 for bringing in a third bag.

Over 100 pounds?

Any item weighing more than 100 pounds must be shipped as Air Cargo. However, customers cannot use SWA Cargo unless classified as a “Known Shipper” as defined by the TSA or TSA approved Indirect Air Carriers (IAC). For full details about shipping cargo, visit www.swacargo.com.

Military exception

Military Passengers traveling on active duty or permanent change of station orders will be exempt from the two-piece Baggage limit and will not be subject to excess, oversize, or overweight Southwest baggage fees, provided that none of the pieces of Baggage exceeds 100 pounds in weight and 80 inches in size (L+W+H).

Strollers

Customers traveling with children will be allowed to check one stroller and one Child Restraint System (CRS) or car seat per child without charge. This is in addition to the regular free baggage allowance.

TSA’s list of prohibited items

Make sure you are aware of TSA’s baggage restrictions.

Tip: Use the free app WalletFlo to help you travel the world for free by finding the best travel credit cards and promotions!

If you’re not familiar with prohibited items you can read more about these here.

Liability

Southwest Airlines’ liability for lost, damaged, or delayed baggage is limited to $3,500.00 per fare-paying Customer.

Keep in mind that many credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve offer protections for lost and delayed luggage as well.

Claims

Damaged or lost baggage must be reported, in person, within four hours of Customer’s arrival at destination. So don’t wait around if your luggage ends up lost. Report it asap.

Late Check-in

Baggage checked at curbside or at the ticket counter less than 45 minutes before scheduled departure will be tagged with a Late Check-In Tag.

Although every effort will be made to get late checked baggage on your flight, in the event your baggage does not arrive with you at your destination, Southwest will not assume delivery charges to get your baggage to you. Thus, you probably want to check in your bags at least an hour before your departure time just to play it safe.

International check-in

You cannot check in or check luggage at the curbside if traveling on an international itinerary.

Special restrictions

There are certain special restrictions for items such as alcohol, batteries, camera equipment, etc. You can click here to read more about the Southwest baggage allowances for these items.

Pets

To find out about all of the rules and restrictions for flying with pets on Southwest click here.

Final word

Southwest baggage fees are one of the best perks about flying with Southwest. Never forget to factor in these savings when shopping airfare rates. And make sure you capitalize on savings if you’re a military member.

American Airlines Baggage Fees Guide (Checked, International, Military) [2023]

American Airlines is a huge airline just like United and Delta, and just like those other legacy carriers it comes with baggage fees.

In this article, I’ll discuss the specific American Airlines baggage restrictions and fees for carry-ons, checked bags, and international flights and show you some ways to avoid these fees. I’ll also talk about special circumstances such as for overweight baggage, pet policies, and military privileges.

What are American Airlines baggage fees?

American Airlines generally charges $30 for your first checked bag and allows one free carry-on and personal item. However, fees can vary based on the number of checked bags and your specific routes. Keep reading below for more details.

How can I avoid AA baggage fees?

You can avoid AA baggage fees in several different ways. One of the easiest and quickest ways to avoid the fees is to use the right credit card but I will explain all the different routes below.

AAdvantage and Oneworld elite status

American Airlines has four tiers in its loyalty program called AAdvantage, and each tier offers some type of checked baggage fees that are waived. Depending on your status, you might get 1 to 3 baggage fees waived.

Below, you can see the requirements for each elite status tier and the free baggage allowance.

AAdvantage Gold / Oneworld Ruby

  • 40,000 Loyalty Points
  • 1 bag fee waived

AAdvantage Platinum / Oneworld Sapphire

  • 75,000 Loyalty Points
  • 2 bags fees waived

AAdvantage Platinum Pro / Oneworld Emerald

  • 125,000 Loyalty Points
  • 3 bags fees waived

AAdvantage Executive Platinum / Oneworld Emerald

  • 200,000 Loyalty Points
  • 3 bags fees waived

Note: Oneworld status holders from other airlines don’t need to worry about Loyalty Points, that is for AAdvantage status.

If you are an AAdvantage elite member and you have others on the same reservation, then you and all other passengers (excluding group reservations) can get the same checked baggage fees waived that your status tier allows.

Fare types

The only fare type that includes bags would be first/business class or premium economy seats. No true economy fare will include bags and this includes Main Cabin Extra and of course Basic Economy.

If you wanted bags included in your ticket price, you must be flying a premium cabin seat.

Flying to certain destinations

You can avoid AA baggage fees by flying on certain routes. Be sure to check out the chart below which breaks down all of these different destinations and their corresponding prices.

Credit Cards

American Airlines has many different credit cards that have free baggage as a benefit. There are cards issued by Citi and Barclays and both have advantages and disadvantages.

However, note the AA co-branded cards listed below will only give you a free bag on domestic itineraries. This is in contrast to the United Explorer Card which offers free baggage on international itineraries.

Citi issued AA cards

  • Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Card
  • CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select Card
  • Citi AAdvantage Executive Card

Each of the Citi cards mentioned above offers a free bag along with a handful of other benefits like companion tickets if you spend a certain amount.

Both Platinum cards offer the first checked bag for free for you and up to four companions. The Executive card offers the first checked bag for free for you and up to eight companions. But again note that all these free checked bags are for domestic itineraries only.

Don’t Miss out! Find out which American Airlines credit card can set you up with a big bonus, lounge access, free checked bags, and a short-cut to AAdvantage elite status! Read more here!

Barclaycard issued AA cards

  • AAdvantage Aviator Red
  • AAdvantage Aviator Silver
  • AAdvantage Aviator Business

Each of the Barclaycards offers slightly different benefits.

Both the Aviator Red and Business cards offer the first checked bag for free for you and up to 4 companions. The Aviator Silver offers the first checked bag for free for you and up to eight companions.

There are also credit cards that offer travel credits helping you reduce or eliminate the baggage fees.

Chase Sapphire Reserve

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is one of the hottest travel rewards credit cards. It earns 3X the points on dining and travel and comes with a host of valuable benefits. One of these perks is a $300 travel credit that can be used on anything that codes as travel, including your baggage fees.

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

CAPITAL ONE VENTURE benefits

One of my favorite cards to use to cover miscellaneous travel purchases is the Capital One Venture card. It’s a popular credit card that comes with a bonus of 50,000 miles after you spend $3,000 in the first three months.

It earns 2% cashback on all purchases toward travel, and the points can be used to cover virtually any travel purchase.

American Airlines personal item and carry-on restrictions

Every passenger, no matter what fare or class, can bring on a personal item and carry-on bag when flying American Airlines.

Personal item

When flying AA, you can bring one personal item onboard and it can be anything that can go under the seat in front of you or under the ottoman in business or first class. Personal items must not exceed:

  • 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45 x 35 x 20 cm)

Some examples of personal items would be a briefcase, purse, laptop, and small backpack.

Related: What’s a Personal Item on a Plane?

Carry-on

You can bring one carry-on item in any class when flying AA. Carry-on items must not exceed:

  • 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm) including handles and wheels

Soft-sided garment bags up to 51 inches / 130 cm (length + width + height) can also be taken as your carry-on item.

For your carry-on item, you can bring a suitcase, bag, garment bag, carrycot, pushchair or child seat for infants, and any required mobility aids, such as a wheelchair. Some items will be gate checked for free. As long as it doesn’t exceed the dimensions above, you will be fine.

Musical instruments are also considered a carry-on item and must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

All items over the above dimensions will be subject to fees. I will go over special checked item fees below.

Liquids

The same TSA standards apply to American Airlines flights operating within the US, arriving, and departing from the US. You can review a list provided by the TSA of permitted and prohibited items which may be included in carry-on baggage including the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule.

These fares seem pretty high but compared to other airlines, these fees aren’t that different. Remember, if you have status, you don’t have to pay these fees, even when you are flying on a Basic Economy ticket.

In comparison to other international airlines, United charges the following rates:

  • $35 for the first checked bag
  • $45 for the second checked bag
  • $150 to $200 for the third checked bag ($200 for some international flights)

American Airlines checked baggage allowance

When flying economy or premium economy without status, checked bags must not exceed 62″ (158 cm) in overall dimensions and exceed 50 lbs (23 kg) .

If you’re flying with Executive Platinum status, Oneworld Emerald status, business or first class your weight limit is 70 lbs (32 kg).

American Airlines excess checked baggage fee

Overweight bags and/or bags that exceed the dimensions will receive an extra fee.

Oversize bags

Oversize bags are larger than 62 in (158 cm) but keep in mind that American Airlines won’t accept checked bags over 126 in (320 cm).

Here are the oversize baggage fees:

  • Between U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada: $200
  • Mexico, Caribbean, Central America (except Panama), Guyana and Suriname: $200
  • Panama, South America (except Guyana / Suriname): $150
  • Europe, Israel and Qatar: $150
  • China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, India, Australia and New Zealand: $200

Overweight bags

Overweight bags are over 50 pounds, and American Airlines won’t accept checked bags over 100 lbs (45 kgs.) First, business, Executive Platinum, and Oneworld Emerald members can check bags up to 70 lbs (32 kg) for free.

Here are the overweight baggage fees:

  • Between U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada
    • 51 lbs (23 kg) – 70 lbs (32 kg): $100
    • 71 lbs (32 kg) – 100 lbs (45 kg): $200

    • 71 lbs (32 kg) – 100 lbs (45 kg): $450 (not accepted to/from Australia)

Remember these fees will go on top of the regular checked luggage fees. So if you were checking one overweight bag in for a US flight you would have a total of $130 in fees. ($30 for the first checked baggage fee and $100 for the overweight baggage fee.)

Sports baggage on American Airlines flights

If you want to bring sporting equipment on your AA flight, you must keep in mind maximum size and weight limitations.

American Airlines states:

When traveling with any sports equipment, the maximum linear size (length + width + height) is 126 in / 320 cm, and the maximum weight is 70 lbs / 32 kgs, subject to the airplane size and available cargo space.

Any sports item not specifically mentioned and not prohibited will be charged standard checked bag fees up to 50 lbs / 23 kgs and 126 in / 320 cm (oversize fees don’t apply).

  • Antlers
  • Archery
  • Baseball bats
  • Bicycle
  • Bowling
  • Camping equipment
  • Curling equipment
  • Fencing equipment
  • Fishing
  • Golf clubs
  • Hang gliders
  • Hockey, cricket and lacrosse equipment
  • Javelin and pole vault
  • Oars and paddles
  • Parachute
  • Scuba gear (with tanks)
  • Scuba gear (without tanks)
  • Shooting equipment
  • Skateboards
  • Skis (snow/water) and snowboards
  • Watersports boards
  • Tennis, badminton, squash, or racquetball
  • Windsurf

For items not mentioned, you will be subject to standard checked baggage, oversize, and overweight fees.

Please refer to AA’s website for details about each of the sporting equipment above.

Musical instruments in the cabin

When flying AA with musical instruments, they can come as your carry-on if they are within 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm) or can be checked with a maximum size of 150 in (381 cm) and 165 lbs (75 kg.) Anything larger has to be shipped via cargo.

Your bags are subject to baggage excess fees on top of the standard checked baggage fees.

Tips when traveling with musical instruments

Contact AA before your flight to guarantee the aircraft type can handle your baggage size. If you are checking your musical instrument, make sure it’s in a hard-sided case.

If you want to bring your musical instrument onboard without putting it in the overhead bin, you can buy another seat. Contact AA to reserve a second seat for your musical instrument.

American Airlines military baggage policy

AA does have a unique benefit for military personnel besides waived baggage fees. Active duty military personnel and dependents (or up to 2 guests) can access Admirals Clubs for free and all you need is your military ID.

For active duty military personnel and dependents, while traveling on orders, you get 5 checked bags for free. While traveling on leisure, you are able to check 3 bags for free. One must present a military ID at check-in. Learn more here.

Sun Country Airlines Baggage Fees Guide (Carry-On, Checked, Military) [2023]

Sun Country Airlines is a small boutique ultra-low-cost carrier (ULLC) based out of Minneapolis with destinations across the Americas. Unfortunately, baggage fees are a real problem with ULLC’s as your bags will have to pay to fly. Sun Country Airlines isn’t exempt from baggage fees as they charge up to $40 for a carry-on suitcase (aka overhead baggage).

In this article, I outline Sun Country Airlines personal item, carry-on, and checked baggage policies. Then I simplify military, sporting equipment, and pet policies.

What are Sun Country Airlines baggage fees?

Sun Country Airlines baggage fees for carry-on can go up to $45 but can be less than $40 when adding baggage at the right time. For checked baggage, fees can be up to $40 for the 1st bag. I will go into detail down below.

Can I avoid Sun Country Airlines Baggage fees?

You can avoid Sun Country Airlines baggage fees in several ways.

Sun Country Rewards

If you fly Sun Country enough and collect their points, you can use those points for anything purchased on Sun Country’s website or by calling Sun Country directly.

The points are simple compared to other airlines as Sun Country is 1:1 with the dollar. So, one point is equal to one penny. If you had 100 points, it would be equal to $1. You can use the points for baggage fees, airline tickets, seat selections, or priority services.

Credit Cards

You can utilize certain credit cards to reduce or eliminate your baggage fees on Sun Country Airlines.

Sun Country Airlines Visa Signature Card

The Sun Country Airlines Visa Signature Card is an interesting card that has a few benefits that might be valuable to you.

You can get one free premium drink per flight, priority boarding, and 50% off seat selections and baggage fees. There is a milestone bonus after spending a certain amount each year. Plus, you don’t have to worry about your points expiring.

You also have travel insurance built into the card, which includes delayed baggage insurance.

The cashback you earn can be used to erase any travel purchases you made, including baggage fees.

Sun Country Airlines personal item restrictions

Sun Country allows all passengers one free personal item.

The personal item must comply with the following measurements:

  • Height: 17 inches
  • Width: 13 inches
  • Depth: 9 inches

Can you bring a backpack as a personal item?

As long as your backpack can fit under the seat and complies with the dimensions above, you should be allowed to bring it in as a personal item just as you would with a purse, laptop bag, or other bags.

Sun Country Airlines carry-on restrictions

Sun Country Airlines doesn’t allow any carry-on bags to fly for free. I explain more about carry-on fees right below this section.

You are allowed only one carry-on bag after paying the fees. Your carry-on bag must fit in the carry-on size checker that Sun Country has at the check-in counters and gates.

The max dimensions:

  • Height: 24 inches
  • Width: 16 inches
  • Depth: 11 inches

The max weight of your carry-on bag cannot exceed 35 lbs.

Sun Country Airlines carry-on fees

Unlike most US carriers like United, Delta, and American, Sun Country Airlines will charge you for your carry-on luggage for every single flight.

The price for Sun Country Airlines carry-on fees goes up the closer you are to the time of your departure. And keep in mind that these fees are non-refundable.

So don’t think you can pay for a carry-on as a precaution and then get refunded — not gonna happen!

The prices below are for one-way flights, not roundtrip.

  • Adding baggage after purchase via My Trips or online check-in: $45

Notice how at the time of booking it says “up to”? Well, it all depends on the route you fly. Sometimes it might be $30 or sometimes it might be $26 or even sometimes less.

It really depends on the length of the route.

Liquids

The same TSA standards apply to Sun Country Airlines flights operating within the US, arriving, and departing from the US. You can review a list provided by the TSA of permitted and prohibited items which may be included in carry-on baggage including the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule.

  • $45 for the second checked bag
  • $150 to $200 for the third checked bag ($200 for some international flights)

Sun Country Airlines checked baggage allowance

The regular baggage weight and size allowance for Sun Country Airlines limits each bag to 50 lbs and 62 linear inches.

So, if you don’t want to incur an overweight and/or oversize fee, you need to limit your baggage to 50 lbs and 62 linear inches. If it exceeds either weight or size, your bag(s) will be subject to excess fees.

Sun Country Airlines excess checked baggage fees

Sun Country Airlines overweight and oversized fees for baggage aren’t as bad as one might think. In fact, their excess checked baggage fees are slightly less than other airlines.

Overweight fees

If your bag exceeds 50 lbs, you will be subject to the following fees on top of your regular baggage fee.

  • 51-60 lbs: $20
  • 61-99 lbs: $60

Checked bags weighing 70 pounds or more are not accepted on flights to/from Jamaica and Puerto Rico. Checked bags weighing more than 100 pounds are not accepted on any Sun Country flight.

For example, if my bag was weighing over 61 lbs, I would be charged $60 on top of the fee I paid for checking the bag. So, I would be charged two times. Unfortunately, there are no ways around these fees unless you use your travel credit from a credit card.

Oversize fee

If your bag exceeds 62 linear inches, you will be subject to the following fees on top of your regular baggage fee.

  • 63+ linear inches: $100

Sun Country Airlines sports equipment fees

Sun Country Airlines checked sports equipment will sometimes be accepted as checked baggage or as a sports equipment specialty bag where you will be charged a special fee to check your sporting equipment.

Sporting equipment that can be checked as regular baggage:

The following equipment can be checked under the normal checked baggage fees that are explained above.

  • Skiing or snowboarding equipment
  • Bowling equipment
  • Hockey equipment
  • Fishing equipment
  • Golfing equipment
  • Lacrosse equipment
  • Sport bags (aka baseball, softball, hockey, dance, etc.)

Sporting equipment that is charged as extra bags

The following can be checked, but you will be charged a sporting equipment fee of $100. Call Sun Country Reservations for further help at +1 651-905-2737

  • Scuba-diving equipment
  • Surfboard, wakeboard, & kiteboards
  • Windsurfing equipment
  • Bicycles
  • Antlers
  • Trailer hitches

Sun Country Airlines military baggage policy

Sun Country Airlines allows active-duty military personnel to bring on two free checked bags and one free carry-on bag.

If the checked bags are overweight or oversized, those fees will be waived for up to two checked bags.

Military personnel must show a valid active-duty military ID with Uniformed Services affiliation at the airport. If you want to learn more about military benefits for other airlines, I suggest reading our article.

When can I check-in my bags for Sun Country Airlines?

Sun Country Airlines check-in depends on your departure city and destination.

Minimal check-in time for Sun Country Airlines

  • Domestic flights: 45 minutes before scheduled departure
  • International flights: 60 minutes before scheduled departure

The above times aren’t suggested times for checking into your flight. These are cutting it close and you still would have to get through security. I would suggest checking with the departure airport as each international airport is different.

Suggested check-in time for Sun Country Airlines

  • At Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) airport: 90 minutes before scheduled departure
  • All other airports: 2 hours before scheduled departure

I personally like to arrive at the airport two hours before scheduled international departures if I don’t have any priority access. However, arriving earlier minimizes the risk of missing your flight. Especially as lines can take a while…

Long check-in lines can happen for any airline, especially leisure heavy destinations like Hawaii.

As always, check the policies for the departure airport as some airports have different policies in foreign countries.

Sun Country Airlines pet policy

Sun Country allows cats and dogs on board, as long as they are small enough to fit comfortably in an approved carrier. The carrier must fit under the seat in front of you. The approved carrier dimensions shouldn’t exceed 16x10x8 inches.

When you make your pet reservation in advance, aka calling Sun Country reservations, you will only need to pay $75 to bring your pet on board in an approved carrier.

For walk-up requests at the airport without any pet reservations for the flight, it would be $100. Do note, walk-ups are based on availability.

To make a reservation for your pet, call Sun Country Airlines at +1 651-905-2737. Sun Country Airlines does limit the number of pets on board to four total pets. Each passenger can only bring one pet each.

Sun Country Airlines has a wonderful FAQ section answering all your questions about flying with your pet here.

What if my bags are lost or damaged on Sun Country Airlines?

If your bags are lost or damaged, make sure you report the problem to Sun Country Airlines immediately. It is imperative to make a claim in person at the baggage service desk for Sun Country Airlines or filling out of the forms online.

To report your delayed or missing bag, you can do it at the airport or by filling out a form here.

If your bag is damaged, you can make a report at the airport or fill out this form here.

What if I lost an item on Sun Country Airlines?

It is best to find a Sun Country Airlines representative at the airport before leaving. They could go back on the aircraft for you as federal regulations prohibit you from entering the aircraft again.

If you cannot tell a Sun Country agent at the airport about leaving something on board the aircraft, you can fill out this form here.

Final word

Sun Country is prone to baggage fees, but they certainly have cheaper fees than some other full-service airlines.

I do hope you found this article helpful. Keep in mind those tips on how you can avoid baggage fees flying Sun Country. If you do fly Sun Country Airlines, have a lovely flight and enjoy the skies.

Delta Airlines Baggage Fees Guide: (International & Oversized) [2023]

Delta baggage fees are pretty similar to what other major carriers like United and American but there are some differences. In this article, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about the different types of baggage policies and fees for personal items, carry-ons, and checked baggage. I’ll also show you several ways that you can avoid paying Delta baggage fees, including those on international flights.

What are the Delta baggage fees?

Delta allows you to bring on one personal item and one carry-on item free of charge and will usually charge $30 each way for your first bag at or under 50 pounds. The price for additional bags will depend on the route you’re taking and on additional factors as well. Keep reading below for more specifics on the baggage fees.

How to get free checked baggage with Delta

There are numerous ways to avoid checked baggage fees on delta airlines. One of the easiest and quickest methods is to just get the right credit card but I will cover all the different routes you can go below.

Delta credit cards baggage benefits

If you have an eligible SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express, you receive your first bag free on Delta flights booked with your SkyMiles Credit Card. The benefit extends to up to eight travel companions listed on the cardmember’s reservation (for a total of nine passengers).

Here is a list of eligible cards:

The Delta credit cards offer welcome bonuses tend to come and go throughout the year so for cards like the Gold and Platinum card, you want to make sure that you’re jumping on those cards when the welcome offers are the highest.

Typically, I would try to find these cards offering 60,000 miles or more for a welcome bonus. However, if you are primarily concerned with free baggage, then you might want to just jump on these cards right away!

Delta elite status baggage policy

If you have elite status with Delta they will reward you with free baggage (up to three bags). Here’s what you can expect to get from Medallion status.

Flights within the US

  • Silver: One free 70 pound bag
  • Gold: Two free 70 pound bags
  • Platinum: Three free 70 pound bags
  • Diamond: Three free 70 pound bags

You’ll also get an additional 50 pound bag for free when flying between other international destinations.

Also, if you are flying first class (Delta One) you can get three free 70 pound bags regardless of status level. And if you are flying Delta premium select you can get three free 50 pound bags regardless of status level.

Delta military baggage policy

If you are an active military member flying with Delta you can get many bags for free. When on military orders your bags can be 80 inches and for personal travel your bags can be 62 inches. If you are traveling on military orders you can get five free 100 pound bags regardless of what type of class you are flying. So for example if you are flying basic economy or you are flying first class you will get five free 100 pound bags each time.

Things are a little bit different if you are flying for personal travel. If you’re flying for personal travel then you will only get two free 50 pound bags if you are flying basic economy, main cabin, or Delta comfort plus. If you’re flying Delta premium select you get three free 50 pound bags. However, if you are flying first class, or Delta one you will get three free 70 pound bags. To find out more about military airline benefits click here.

Delta carry-on & personal item rules

Delta allows you to bring on one personal item and one carry-on. This is very similar to other major US airlines but different from those budget carriers like Spirit and Frontier that love to charge you for carry-on items. One thing that makes Delta unique is that with their basic economy product, you still get a free carry-on.

What are Delta personal items?

Delta personal items may consist of the following:

  • Purse
  • Briefcase
  • Camera bag
  • Diaper bag
  • Laptop computer (computers cannot be checked)
  • 1 item of a similar or smaller size to those listed above

Typically, a small backpack may be considered a personal item as well and they won’t give you any trouble unless you’re trying to bring along a giant backpack. There’s also a list of items that don’t count as personal items and they are as follows:

Related: What’s a Personal Item on a Plane?

What are the Delta carry-on dimensions?

  • Baggage may not exceed 45 linear inches (or 114 cm) in combined length, width and height, including any handles and wheels, with the exception of small musical instruments that fit in the overhead compartment space or under-seat space available at the time of boarding
  • Baggage must meet carry on size limits (approximately 22″ x 14″ x 9″ or 56 x 35 x  23 cm).

Passengers traveling on Delta Connection flights, and only those flights with 50 seats or less, are only permitted to carry personal items on board the aircraft due to limited overhead space.

Delta checked baggage policy

Delta checked baggage dimensions

Your checked baggage must not exceed 62 inches when you total the length + width + height. Your bag must also be no more than 50 pounds unless one of the exceptions applies that allow you to have bags up to 75 or 100 pounds.

You should note that there are separate fees for each limitation you exceed: size, weight and quantity. So let’s say that you were checking an extra bag that also exceeded your weight allowance of 50 pounds and that the bag was also oversized. In that case you’d be subject to three fees: one for the extra bag, one for exceeding the weight limit and one for going over the size restriction.

The fees can change depending on where you are flying to so if you want to check out the fees to the different locations then click here.

Delta domestic checked baggage fees

The standard amount that you will pay for your first checked bag will be $30. However, the prices for checked luggage change depending on the route that you’re flying. Below are some of the fees you can expect to pay for domestic travel when traveling in basic economy, main cabin, or Delta Comfort+.

  • 1st bag: $30
  • 2nd bag: $40
  • 3rd bag: $150
  • 4th+ bag: $200 each

If you are traveling in first class, Delta Premium Select, or Delta One, you’ll be able to bring along two free checked bags up to 70 pounds on just about every route.

Delta international checked baggage fees

When it comes to international flights, the baggage fees can change a lot depending on your destination. Here are some prices you might run into for travel around North America.

Travel between US and Canada

  • 1st bag: $30 USD/CAD
  • 2nd bag: $50 USD/CAD

Travel between US and Mexico

  • 1st bag: $30 USD/CAD
  • 2nd bag: $55 USD/CAD

It’s worth noting that for some international routes you don’t have to pay for your checked luggage at all!

For example, your first two bags can be checked for free when traveling from North America to the following countries: Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, & Yemen.

There are also a lot of other places that give you your first two bags for free when flying to or from the US like Australia, India, and many countries in Africa, South America, and Asia.

Here is a chart to help you out with the international fees.

Check here for the full list of countries you can fly to while avoiding baggage fees.

First class, Delta Premium Select, and Delta One baggage fees

As stated, you can check two bags free if you are flying First class, Delta Premium Select, or Delta One. Moreover, these bags can weigh up to 70 pounds each. This is the standard allowance of premium passengers that other airlines offer as well.

If you want all the tips on how to deal with checked baggage and how to avoid fees, be sure to check out the ultimate guide to checked luggage here.

Special baggage limitations

Geographical restrictions with Delta baggage

Many airlines have special limitations on baggage when traveling to certain destination during certain times and Delta is no different.

For example, you may be limited to a maximum of one or two checked pieces of luggage when flying to places like Key West, Florida (EYW), Quito, Ecuador (UIO), the list goes on and on here.

So they key is that if you have plans to fly out of the country on Delta and you are planning on bringing a lot of luggage with you, you need to first verify that you’re allowed to bring so much luggage with you during that time.

What is the total number of bags you can check with Delta?

You can check up to 10 bags per passenger on flights operated by Delta, Delta Shuttle or Delta Connection. Delta does reserve the right to limit the amount of baggage you bring on the plane when the excess prevents them from transporting up to two bags per passenger.

Can you bring excess bags on Delta Connection flights?

Delta Connection carriers will accept excess baggage but only on a space-available basis. If the baggage cannot be carried on the same flight with you, it will be transported on the next available flight.

Tip: Use the free app WalletFlo to help you travel the world for free by finding the best travel credit cards and promotions!

Delta special baggage items

Delta has some special rules for certain items such as fragile items, sports equipment, medical supplies, etc. Here’s a rundown of some of those policies.

Fragile or bulky items

If you are traveling with something bulky or very fragile, you may want to purchase a ticket for your fragile item so that you can store your item in any passenger seat with a physical bulkhead or divider in front of the compartment.

You’ll need to contact reservations to see about the fee for this but if you wish to do this the item must not exceed 100 pounds and also meet some other requirements you can find here.

Here’a list of potential fragile or bulky items:

The PERKS is another bundle that comes with a free carry-on and a free checked bag as well as the benefit below:

Upgrading to these packages adds to the cost of your airfare and depending on what fees you were going to incur, it could end up saving you money.

You can utilize certain credit cards to reduce or eliminate your baggage fees on Frontier Airlines. The Chase Sapphire Reserve is one of the hottest travel rewards credit cards. It earns 3X the points on dining and travel and comes with a host of valuable benefits. Frontier Airlines carry-on fees

Unlike most US carriers like United, Delta, and American, Frontier Airlines will charge you for your carry-on luggage.

The prices for your carry-on baggage fees will depend on your specific flight/route and go up the closer you are to the time of your departure. I will use a sample booking from Houston to Cleveland to illustrate the prices for carry-on fees.

One last thing, keep in mind that these fees are non-refundable. So don’t think you can pay for a carry-on as a precaution and then get refunded — not gonna happen!

Here are all of the prices.

During Booking on Web / Mobile App

  • $54

Flyfrontier.com, after booking and up to 24 hours before departure

  • $63

Web Check-in

  • $63

Airport ticket counter or self-service kiosk

  • $79

Departure Gate

  • $99

Call Center

  • $79

So the cheapest price for a carry-on for this particular flight is $54. That sounds like a lot and it really is considering that so many airlines allow you to bring a free carry-on. However, if you wait until you arrive at the departure gate to pay for your carry-on it could cost you $99!

But that is just one flight so here are some prices for some additional flights that I also checked. I was primarily concerned with the price at booking so I only compared those.

  • Atlanta to Dallas — $54
  • Baltimore to Austin — $54
  • Cancun to Phoenix — $64
  • Chicago to New Orleans — $54
  • Denver to San Diego — $54
  • Fort Myers to Minneapolis — $54

So once again, the price for your carry-on will vary depending on your route but you generally will probably be paying around $54 for your carry-on, assuming you purchase the carry-on at booking.

Frontier Airlines checked baggage fees

The prices for your checked baggage fees will depend on your specific flight/route. I will use a sample booking from Houston to Cleveland to illustrate the prices for checked baggage fees.

Flyfrontier.com, at booking

  • 1st checked bag: $54
  • 2nd checked bag: $74
  • 3rd+ checked bag: $94

Flyfrontier.com, after booking and up to 24 hours before departure

  • 1st checked bag: $63
  • 2nd checked bag: $83
  • 3rd+ checked bag: $103

Web Check-in

  • 1st checked bag: $63
  • 2nd checked bag: $83
  • 3rd+ checked bag: $103

Airport ticket counter or self-service kiosk

  • 1st checked bag: $79
  • 2nd checked bag: $89
  • 3rd+ checked bag: $95

Departure Gate

  • 1st checked bag: $99
  • 2nd checked bag: N/A
  • 3rd+ checked bag: N/A

Call Center

  • 1st checked bag: $79
  • 2nd checked bag: $89
  • 3rd+ checked bag: $95

Here are some prices for some additional flights that I also checked. Again, I was primarily concerned with the price at booking so I only compared those.

  • Atlanta to Dallas — $54
  • Baltimore to Austin — $54
  • Cancun to Phoenix — $64
  • Chicago to New Orleans — $54
  • Denver to San Diego — $54
  • Fort Myers to Minneapolis — $54

As you can tell, the price for one checked bag at the time of booking is pretty high. For example, compare it to the prices for United Airlines. United charges the following rates:

  • $35 for the first checked bag
  • $45 for the second checked bag
  • $150 to $200 for the third checked bag ($200 for some international flights)

$35 versus $54 is a pretty big difference.

The kicker is that for Frontier, you’ll need to know for sure that you’re going to check a bag at the time of booking. If you pay to check a bag but don’t actually use it, you lose that money. And if you fail to pay for a bag that you will need checked, you could end up paying over $60 just to check one bag.

But if you know for sure you’ll be needing a checked bag, that means you can pay roughly the same price that you’d pay with legacy carriers for your first check bag. Of course, don’t forget that airlines like Southwest allow you to check two bags for free.

Frontier Airlines carry-on restrictions

  • Carry-on bags can be no larger than 24″H, 16″W, 10″D (including handles, wheels, and straps)

Liquids

The standard TSA standards apply to Frontier flights and you can review a list provided by the TSA of permitted and prohibited items which may be included in carry-on baggage including the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule.

Free carry-on items

There are certain items that you will be able to bring on to the plane for free.

These include:

Remember, myFRONTIER Elite members and passengers who purchased THE WORKS always receive a free carry-on bag in addition to their personal item.

Frontier Airlines checked bag restrictions

  • Checked bags must be within 62 linear inches (that’s length + width + depth) and
  • Checked bags must be no heavier than 40 pounds.
  • Baggage that goes over these limits will be charged $50 – $100 for exceeding weight and $75 for exceeding linear inch limits.
  • Bags will NOT be accepted if they are over 100 pounds and/or over 110 linear inches

When can you check-in bags for Frontier Airlines?

You can check your bags up to two hours prior to your departure.

Note: For domestic flights you and your baggage must be checked no later than 45 minutes before your departure and 60 minutes before departure for international flights.

Of course, most experienced travelers will tell you that you should try to arrive to the airport about two hours prior to a domestic flight and three hours prior to an international flight.

Frontier Airlines military baggage fees

Frontier Airlines provides the following baggage waivers when presenting a Common Access Card (CAC) with a uniformed services affiliation at check-in:

  • One free personal item
  • One free carry-on bag
  • Two free checked bags

These baggage waivers apply to the individual with active duty status and does not extend to family members or traveling companions. US military passengers also must comply with the standard baggage acceptance policy for size and weight limits. However, oversize and overweight baggage fees are waived for the first two free checked bags.

U.S. military passengers are defined as active duty armed forces, reserves, and national guard.

Frontier International Baggage Fees

For the most part, Frontier’s international rules for checked and carry-on baggage are the same for domestic travel as far as baggage allowance, size, and weight restrictions.

However, baggage checked to or from Canada is subject to a maximum 70lbs weight limit.

The Frontier Airlines pet policy fee is $99 per one-way and may be paid in advance during booking. If you do not pay in advance, you’ll need to pay when you check-in your pet.

In addition to the travel container for your pet, you are allowed either a personal item (8”H x 14”W x 18”L) or a carry-on bag (10”H x 16”W x 24”L). An additional fee will apply for the carry-on bag.

Only certain animals will be allowed, such as domesticated dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, or small household birds. Only domesticated dogs and cats may be carried to or from international destinations.

Frontier does not allow pets to be shipped as checked baggage.

Frontier seat selection fees

In case you were also interested in seat selection fees, below is the chart published by Frontier. There is standard seating and then stretch seating that offers a little bit more legroom and recline and is thus a little bit more expensive.

You’ll notice that just like the baggage fees, the fees for choosing your seat also go up the closer to the date of departure you get. So it cannot be stressed enough — try to take care of all of your baggage and seat selection needs at the time of booking.

Also be very careful about trying to select a stretch seating from the call center or when you arrive at the airport because the prices will be exorbitant.

Seat OptionsPricing
Standard Seating$17 – $55
Stretch Seating$35 – $90

What’s a Personal Item on a Plane? (Backpacks, Duffle Bags) [2023]

What exactly counts as a personal item on a plane? For example, can you get away with a backpack or duffel bag even if it might be slightly over the allowed dimensions?

Before heading out to the airport, you want to make sure that you have a good understanding of what counts as a personal item because it could cause you issues and potentially affect your ability to board your plane.

In this article, I’ll go in depth and explain to you exactly what a personal item is and answer a lot of common questions travelers have.

What is a personal item on a plane?

Personal items are small bags such as backpacks and purses or individual items like laptops and cameras that are generally allowed on a plane in combination with your carry-on item. These are typically stored underneath the seat in front of you although some items may be okay to keep in your lap during the flight.

Keep reading to find out more about the rules for carrying personal items on planes and also to see what items count as free “bonus” items.

Rules for personal items

Where to find the rules

You generally will find the rules for personal items on the carry-on page on an airline’s website.

Size dimensions

Airlines will often publish specific size dimensions for your personal item and also state that it must fit under the seat beneath you. The size dimensions for personal items are different for almost every airline in the US as you can tell below.

Here’s a rundown of the size policies for major airlines in the US.

United Airlines states:

Your personal item should fit underneath the seat in front of you. The maximum dimensions for your personal item are 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 centimeters x 25 centimeters x 43 centimeters).”

American Airlines states:

Your personal item like a purse or small handbag must fit under the seat in front of you. Dimensions should not exceed 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45 x 35 x 20 cm).

JetBlue states:

All fares include 1 personal item that fits under the seat in front of you. This could be a purse, daypack, laptop bag or approved pet carrier. Personal items cannot exceed 17″ L (43.2 cm) x 13″ W (33 cm) x 8″ H (20.32 cm).

Southwest Airlines states:

Personal-type items include purses, briefcases, cameras, food containers, or laptops (case included). Your personal item must be stored under the seat in front of you, fitting within 18.5 x 8.5 x 13.5 inch dimensions

Spirit Airlines states:

Personal item (e.g., purse, small  backpack, etc.): Dimensions must not exceed 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45 x 35 x 20 cm) including handles and wheels.

Frontier Airlines states:

Personal items can be no larger than 14” tall, 18” wide, and 8” long. Personal items must  fit completely within the personal item portion of the bag sizer. Think purses, totes, computer bags, briefcases, diaper bags and kids backpacks!

Allegiant states:

Your Personal Item (like a purse, briefcase, or a small backpack) must be stored completely underneath the seat in front of you.

Maximum dimensions are 7 x 15 x 16 inches (17.8 x 38.1 x 40.6 centimeters)

I’ve been on hundreds of flights over the years in the US with various carriers including United, Southwest, American, and Delta. I’ve never seen a crew member measure a personal item.

I’m not saying it doesn’t happen (especially on budget airlines) but as long as you can fit your personal item under the seat in front of you (without stuffing it with your legs and causing some commotion), you should be okay.

The major caveat here is when dealing with budget airlines like Frontier and Spirit. These airlines tend to be more strict when it comes to the size of your carry-on and personal items.

They often even have measurement baskets (“sizers”) at the gate for you to place your bag and see if it complies with the size dimensions for both carry-ons and personal items.

I would definitely err on the side of going small with your personal item when flying those airlines.

Airlines that don’t provide specific dimensions

Not every airline provides specific dimensions. For example, here is what Delta Airlines states about its personal items:

“Approved Personal Items| Bringing a personal item? Pick an item like this or of a similar size to store beneath the seat in front of you during your flight.

  • 1 purse, briefcase, small backpack, camera bag or diaper bag
  • 1 laptop bag (computers cannot be checked, unless directed to by security)
  • 1 item of similar or smaller size to those listed”

(Similar size items would be things like fanny packs.)

Alaska Airlines states:

You’ll still be allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item such as a purse, briefcase, or laptop bag.

Hawaiian Airlines states:

Your allotted personal item must be small enough to fit safely under the seat in front of you. Personal items are generally such things as a purse, briefcase, laptop computer, small backpack, or similar piece. In each case, it must fit safely under the seat in front of you.

So the common theme is that your personal item just needs to fit underneath the seat in front of you.

Weight measurements

Some airlines apply weight restrictions to carry-on bags while others even explicitly state that there is no weight requirement. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a published weight requirement for personal items, though they could exist.

It makes sense there would not be weight restrictions for personal items because it would be rare for a flight attendant to ever need to engage in heavy lifting to assist you with putting a personal item under your seat, although some people do put personal items in the overhead storage bins.

Bonus personal items

A lot of airlines will allow you to bring items that don’t count as a carry-on and a personal item. I consider these to be bonus personal items and you can usually find a list of these on the airlines website (some other airlines call them “free items” or “ancillary items”).

One of the most common bonus items is food which — contrary to what many travelers think — can be brought through TSA.

But there are quite a few other items as well.

For example, here are some of the items listed by United:

  • A jacket
  • An umbrella
  • Reading material
  • Food or merchandise that you buy in the airport
  • Assistive devices (such as a collapsible wheelchair, cane, crutches, medical device for prescription medications, or portable oxygen concentrator)
  • FAA-approved child restraint system or safety seat
  • A diaper bag
  • A breast pump
  • A camera
  • A pet carrier (service charges apply for in-cabin pets)

Here’s what American Airlines says:

“Diaper bags (1 per child), soft-sided cooler bags with breast milk, child safety seats, strollers and medical or mobility devices don’t count as your personal item or carry-on.”

Here are the items listed by Delta:

  • A jacket and/or umbrella
  • Food or drink purchased past the security checkpoint
  • Duty-free merchandise
  • Special items like strollers, wheelchairs, child safety seats or assistive devices like crutches

Here are the ancillary items listed by Hawaiian Airlines:

  1. a handbag or pocketbook;
  2. an overcoat, jacket or wrap;
  3. a small foot rug;
  4. an umbrella or walking stick;
  5. a camera and/or a pair of binoculars;
  6. a reasonable amount of reading matter for the flight; and
  7. food (includes baby food) for consumption on the flight.

Typically, a standard travel pillow would also fall under this bonus item category, as I’ve traveled with my carry-on + personal item + travel pillow with zero issues dozens of times.

Two personal items

If you’re allowed a carry-on then you should be able to bring two personal items no problem since one of your personal items can essentially qualify as your carry-on.

But if you don’t have a free carry-on, you might run into trouble.

If you’re not allowed to bring on a free carry-on, you should still be able to bring on a personal item plus a bonus personal item.

But if you are trying to bring two backpacks and you don’t have an allowance for a carry-on bag, there is a high chance you will run into trouble.

If your two personal items are small (can both fit under your seat) and that’s all your carrying, you might be able to bring both of those items but airlines don’t like having a lot of loose items on board for safety purposes, so you might get some resistance.

Commonly asked about personal items

Backpacks

When an airline does not provide an exact measurement for personal items, a common question is what constitutes a “small backpack?”

In my personal experience, a small backpack can include a normal-sized backpack. Indeed, I just flew Delta in the fall of 2021 with my North Face backpack of normal book bag size and had no issues.

If your normal sized backpack is packed to the max or you have a larger backpack (like a backpacking backpack), that’s probably when you start to run into issues.

You might also run into more issues with the budget airlines who could be more strict about the size of your personal items.

Dozens and dozens of online reports indicate people have had success bringing normal-sized backpacks as personal items on budget airlines like Spirit.

This is despite the fact that some of those backpacks were a bit larger than the allowed dimensions and despite the fact that airlines like Spirit, Allegiant, and Frontier have a reputation for being strict on personal items.

It seems that as long as your backpack is not abnormally large and can potentially be squished down to fit below a seat, even budget airlines will be okay with you bringing your (normal-sized) backpack.

But just remember that you are at the mercy of the gate agent. If he or she feels like being a stickler, they could give you a hard time.

Duffel bags

Duffel bags come in a lot of different sizes. A small duffel bag should easily fit under your seat and could be considered a personal item.

However, larger duffel bags look more like carry-on bags and could present a problem for some airlines, especially those budget airlines.

But again, if you can squish it down underneath the seat in front of you relatively easy your chances of encountering an issue are probably pretty minimal.

One tip for carrying a duffel bag is to put it over your shoulder and carry it around like someone would carry a purse. This could make the bag look even smaller especially if you have the bag on the opposite side of the gate agent.

What can you pack or put in your personal item?

You can put virtually anything in your personal item as long as it complies with the airline’s policies and TSA rules.

Most people will probably find it easier to access their liquids from a personal item rather than a carry-on which will make it easier to get through security (but it really just depends on your luggage set up).

Also, I always make sure to include items that I regularly access throughout the flight in my personal item. This could be snacks, drinks, medications, headphones, chargers, etc.

It’s worth mentioning that for the most part TSA rules and airline policies are aligned. In other words, if TSA allows you to bring the item the airline will generally allow you to bring it as well.

But that is not always the case which is why sometimes you need to check with the individual airline.

Basic economy

Basic economy fares are the cheapest type of tickets you can purchase for some airlines.

While cheap, these come with restrictions such as not allowing you to choose your seat or restricting the carry-on luggage you can bring on board.

Typically, a basic economy fare will only restrict your carry-on bag and you will still be allowed to bring on a personal item for free.

Emergency exit row seats and bulkhead

If you choose to fly in the emergency exit rows or in the bulkhead, you may have to store your personal item in the overhead storage bin. That’s because there may be no seat in front of you for you to slide your bag under.

If you are one of the last people to board it’s possible that the overhead storage bin will already be full near your seat.

This means you will have to go hunt down some open space somewhere in the cabin or in a worst-case scenario, you might not find any space and have to ask the flight attendant about your options.

There is always that possibility that your bag will have to be checked if there is no room so I always try to be one of the first to board when sitting in those seats.

Personal items FAQ

Do budget airlines like Frontier check your personal item size?

Budget airlines like Frontier, Spirit, and Allegiant may check your personal item to make sure that it complies with size requirements. However, many passengers never have their personal item checked for size.

How big can a personal item be?

Each airline has its own size dimensions for personal items. However, the general rule of thumb is that if it can easily fit under your seat, it is not too big.

Is a backpack a personal item?

A normal-sized backpack can constitute a personal item for most US airlines.

Can you bring personal items free of charge?

Bringing along a personal item should be free on virtually every airline even if you have booked a basic economy ticket.

How much can a personal item weigh?

Most airlines do not publish weight requirements for personal items.

Final word

Virtually every airline will allow you to bring a personal item on the plane for free. The size requirements will be different for each airline and each airline will allow free bonus items as well. But as long as you can fit your personal item beneath your seat without any issues, you will most likely be fine.

JetBlue Airways Baggage Fees Guide (Carry-On, Checked, International) [2022]

JetBlue Airways is one of my favorite domestic airlines with a solid product in both economy and business. Probably the best transcontinental business class experience you can get. However, JetBlue does charge for bags on their cheapest fare and it does add up.

In this article, I’ll discuss the specific baggage fees for carry-ons, checked bags, and international flights and show you some ways to avoid these fees. I’ll also talk about special circumstances such as overweight baggage, pet policies, and military privileges.

Interested in finding out the hottest travel credit cards for this month? Click here to check them out!

What are the JetBlue Airways baggage fees?

JetBlue allows one free personal item on all fares and one free carry-on luggage (except Blue Basic) but charges flat checked baggage fees depending on how many pieces of luggage you want to be checked.

Bags bought on or before January 15, 2020, will have slightly cheaper checked baggage fees than bags bought on or after January 16, 2020. I will go into detail below.

How can I avoid the baggage fees?

There are a few different ways that you can avoid baggage fees with JetBlue.

JetBlue Mosaic

JetBlue’s one tier loyalty program is called Mosaic which is very straightforward compared to other loyalty programs. To obtain Mosaic status, you need to achieve one of the following bullets below:

  • 15,000 flight points
  • 30 segments and 12,000 flight points
  • Spend $50,000 on the Barclay JetBlue Plus Card

Mosaic members receive 2 free checked bags on any JetBlue flight and many other benefits like expedited security, early boarding, and complimentary alcoholic beverages onboard. You can read more about Mosaic status here.

Fare options

Blue Basic, Blue, Blue Plus, Blue Extra, and Mint are the different fares JetBlue allows you to choose from while booking. The difference between these fares are the fees, expedited security, and seat. Blue Basic and Blue fare, JetBlue’s cheapest fares, come with no checked bags. For Blue Plus and Mint it goes as follows:

  • Blue Plus: 1 free checked bag
  • Blue Flex: 2 free checked bags (fare not being sold anymore)
  • Mint: 2 free checked bags

Each fare is priced differently on each route and changes every day depending on the seats left for that fare on that route and on that day.

Blue Plus fares are normally $27 more than Blue fares, but there is a major downside, JetBlue got rid of Blue Plus from many of its routes.

Credit Cards

You can utilize certain credit cards to receive a free checked bag, reduce, or eliminate your baggage fees on JetBlue

JetBlue Plus Card

The JetBlue Plus Card is a decent credit card that gives you 1 checked bag, $100 credit after purchasing a vacation package, 50% off on in-flight purchases, spend $50,000 get Mosaic status, and 10% points rebate. It does have a $95 annual fee, but it is a good airline card if you’re a Jetblue loyalist.

It earns 2% cash back on all purchases toward travel, and the points can be used to cover virtually any travel purchase.

JetBlue Airlines personal item and carry-on restrictions

Each passenger can bring onboard one personal item and one carry-on bag.

Personal item

Each passenger can bring one personal item onboard and can be anything that is able to go under the seat in front of you. Personal items must not exceed:

  • 17″ Length (43.2 cm)
  • 13″ Width (33 cm)
  • 8″ Height (20.32 cm)

JetBlue gate agents are lenient, so as long as it looks like it will fit under the seat, they will let it go. Some examples of personal items would be a briefcase, purse, laptop, and small backpack

Carry-on

Each passenger can bring one carry-on onboard. The carry-on must not exceed:

  • 22″ Length (55.88 cm)
  • 14″ Width (35.56 cm)
  • 9″ Height (22.86 cm)

Again, JetBlue gate agents are lenient. They never check how big your suitcase it, sometimes I have seen people bring on huge bags that have to be shoved in the overhead bins.

Liquids

The same TSA standards apply to JetBlue flights as it does to any other US flight. You can review a list provided by the TSA of permitted and prohibited items which may be included in carry-on baggage including the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule.

JetBlue Airlines checked baggage fees

The prices below are for one-way flights, not roundtrip, and must not exceed 62″ (157.48 cm) in overall dimensions or exceed 50 pounds (22.68 kg). The fees below apply to checked bags added at the airport or within 24 hours of departure.

Tickets booked on or after 1/16/2020:

  • 1st checked bag: $35
  • 2nd checked bag: $45
  • 3rd+ checked bag: $150

Tickets booked booked on or before 1/15/20:

  • 1st checked bag: $30
  • 2nd checked bag: $40
  • 3rd+ checked bag: $150

If you wish to add a bag to your reservation 24 hours or less prior to departure, then it will cost you an extra $5. So, if you want to check a bag at the airport, it will cost you $40 for your 1st bag and $50 for your 2nd bag.

It is sad that JetBlue keep raising its fees faster than any other airline. That is why JetBlue has two different prices for tickets bought before or after a certain date. When you compare to other airlines, JetBue is being more pricey for baggage.

For example, United charges the following rates:

  • $35 for the first checked bag
  • $45 for the second checked bag
  • $150 to $200 for the third checked bag ($200 for some international flights)

Of course, don’t forget that airlines like Southwest allow you to check two bags for free.

Pets can not travel to Jamaica, Barbados, St Lucia, Cayman Islands, and Trinidad and Tobago. Pets aren’t allowed on interline flights, which are partner airlines.

When you travel with your pet, you will earn 300 TrueBlue points on each segment.

What if my bags are lost or damaged?

If your bags are lost or damaged make sure you report it to JetBlue. It is imperative to make the claim in person, but you can still contact JetBlue after leaving the airport within 4 hours of landing.

You can either go to baggage services at the airport or call the Customer Baggage Assistance center at 1-866-538-5438.

What if I lost an item on JetBlue?

You can contact JetBlue lost and found by filling out their online form here, but it is best to find a crewmember at the airport before leaving and reporting the lost item to the JetBlue crewmember.

Final word

JetBlue does provide free amenities like good wifi, lots of legroom, and limited seatback entertainment, they have to charge somewhere, and it’s with checked bags. Luckily loyal JetBlue Mosaics and JetBlue Plus Card holders can have bags fly for free. However, Jetblue is just like any US airline, and bags don’t fly free.
