Delta Sky Club Guide: (Access & List of Locations) [2022]

If you have walked through any major airport in the USA, you probably noticed a room behind closed doors with a sign reading “Delta Sky Club.” This may have intrigued you and rightfully so because the Delta Sky Club has everything you might need to relax, appease your appetite, and rehydrate before or after a flight.

In this article, I will cover everything you need to know about the Delta Sky Club access policy, lounge features, membership benefits, rules, and a full list of Delta Sky Club locations. And finally, I’ll wrap it up and cover some Delta Sky Club frequently asked questions (FAQs).

What is the Delta Sky Club?

The Sky Club is Delta’s inhouse made lounge that is exclusively for passengers flying Delta Airlines and their partners. It offers a variety of seating and workspaces along with food, beverages, showers, bathrooms, and a private Delta help desk that allows members and guests to handle any questions related to Delta.

In the sections below, I will go into detail of what features and amenities you can find in a Delta Sky Club.

Delta Sky Club access policy

Traditionally, people with a Sky Club membership and elites would be the only ones able to access Delta Sky Clubs. Luckily, you can access Sky Clubs through other means like credit cards.

Credit Cards

It is easier than ever to get free access into the Delta Sky Club and in my opinion, these credit cards represent greater value than the paid membership as you, the cardholder, can gain more benefits than free access to the Delta Sky Club.

The Platinum Card by American Express

  • 5x points on flights booked directly with airlines and American Express Travel
  • 5x points on hotels booked with American Express Travel
  • $200 airline incidentals credit
  • $179 CLEAR credit
  • $200 Hotel credit
  • $300 Equinox credit
  • $240 Entertainment credit
  • Complimentary Delta Sky Club access (when flying Delta)
  • Complimentary Priority Pass Lounge membership
  • Complimentary Centurion Lounge access
  • Complimentary Plaza Premium Lounge access
  • Complimentary Escape Lounge access
  • Fine Hotels & Resorts Program
  • Gold elite status with Marriott and Hilton
  • $695 annual fee (not waived)

The Business Platinum Card by American Express

  • 5x points on flights & hotels booked with American Express Travel
  • $200 airline incidentals credit
  • Complimentary Delta Sky Club access (when flying Delta)
  • Complimentary Priority Pass Lounge membership
  • Complimentary Centurion Lounge access
  • Complimentary Plaza Premium Lounge access
  • Complimentary Escape Lounge access
  • Fine Hotels & Resorts Program
  • Gold elite status with Marriott and Hilton
  • $595 annual fee (not waived)
  • Get 50% more points on purchases of $5k or more and use points for flights and get 35% Points Back

Delta Reserve Credit Card

  • 2 miles per dollar on Delta purchases
  • Priority boarding
  • First checked bag free (learn more)
  • 20% off in-flight purchases
  • Annual fee $550 (not waived)
  • Annual 1-time first class, Comfort+ or main cabin companion certificate
  • Complimentary Delta Sky Club access
  • Annual miles and MQMs after spend requirement

Delta Reserve for Business Credit Card

  • 2 miles per dollar on Delta purchases
  • Priority boarding
  • First checked bag free
  • 20% off in-flight purchases
  • Annual fee $550 (not waived)
  • Annual 1-time first class, Comfort+ or main cabin companion certificate
  • Complimentary Delta Sky Club access
  • Annual miles and MQMs after spend requirement

As you can see, all 4 cards above offer complimentary Delta Sky Club access. However, you should note, these cards only give complimentary access to the cardholder and you would have to pay $39 for each guest.

Clearly, these cards represent greater value than the paid membership that I write more about below. The equivalent membership is $545 annually. That means if you hold any of these cards the annual fee is basically the Sky Club membership fee.

Remember, if you’re active in the military, you can get your American Express card annual fee waived.

The good thing about these cards is that each one holds benefits that outweigh the Sky Club membership benefits. Both Platinum cards give you access to 1300+ lounges worldwide and the annual airline incidental credit that is up to $200. The Delta Reserve Credit Cards also offer annual 1-time companion certificate for first class, Comfort+ or main cabin.

If you hold any of the other Delta co-branded credit cards like the Delta Gold or Delta Platinum, you can still access the Sky Club for $39 per guest per visit.

I personally have The Platinum Card by American Express and find it a very valuable card partly because of Sky Club access when I fly domestic flights as my status only entitles me to Sky Club access while flying internationally. Plus, I love all the other benefits like the collection of lounges I can access and the 5x on airfare.

Delta One

If you’re seated in Delta One (Delta’s name for their international business class product) you have access to Delta Sky Club. This also includes Delta One transcontinental flights.

You’re even entitled Sky Club access when you have connecting flights in your itinerary. An example would be, I am flying to Johannesburg, South Africa from Atlanta in Delta One. However, my origin city is Detroit and I am flying first class between Detroit and Atlanta. As I am connecting onto Delta One, I can access the Sky Clubs in Detroit, even though my flight from Detroit is only a domestic first class flight.

And yes, first class marketed flights on Delta will not get complimentary Sky Club access. It’s only if you are connecting onto a Delta One or SkyTeam partner premium cabin flight that entitles you Sky Club access. It must be marketed as Delta One.

Flying SkyTeam international first or business class

Just like Delta One tickets, flying a SkyTeam partner airline, Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Australia, Gol, and WestJet seated in business or first class (first class as in an international first class product) you are entitled to Sky Club access, even on your connecting Delta flights.

International travel includes: Customers traveling to/from Europe, Asia, South America, Central America, Africa, Canada and Mexico (excludes travel to/from the Carribean, Guam, Palau and Saipan.)

Elite status

Diamond, Platinum, and Gold Medallion members are entitled to Delta Sky Club access when flying Delta on an international itinerary. Even on the domestic legs of your international itinerary, you are still entitled to Sky Club access.

SkyTeam Elite Plus status holders are able to access Sky Clubs as well when traveling on an international itinerary. Therefore, if I have Garuda Indonesia Platinum status I will be able to access Sky Clubs flying Delta or any other SkyTeam airline as my Garuda Indonesia Platinum status includes SkyTeam Elite Plus status as well.

Sky Club Membership

Currently, there are two memberships that are being sold by Delta right now.

  • Individual membership: one-year is $545; 54,500 SkyMiles; or $50 for 12 monthly installments
  • Executive membership: one-year is $845; 84,500 SkyMiles; or $75 for 12 monthly installments

You can also get these as a choice benefit when you become a Diamond Medallion.

Individual membership entitles only you access to the lounge. You cannot bring guests for free but can bring two guests or a spouse/domestic partner and children under 21 for $39 per guest per club visit.

Executive membership entitles you and up to two guests access to the lounge. Extra guests would be $39 per guest per club visit.

Since January 1, 2019, members can only access the Sky Club when flying Delta or partner airlines. The membership only entitles you access to Sky Clubs and not partner lounges, except the SkyTeam Lounge at London-Heathrow as the membership entitles you access to that lounge.

Delta Sky Club features and amenities

Some Delta Sky Clubs do offer unique amenities and features that make them truly unique. From the various types of seating with outlets almost at every seat to the bar that is playing music and TVs, you can work and come down to earth in locally influenced Sky Clubs.

Seating and workspaces

Sky Clubs will have various seats that let you sit back and relax or get your work done. Most seats will offer outlets at or nearby the seat. Sometimes you can find cushy chairs that have a mini table or cubical like seating.

There will even be communal seating, high top seating, basically cafe-like seating. Plus, for the folks that want to relax at the bar, Sky Clubs that offer a bar will have bar seating.

Delta Sky Club Sky Deck

As an AvGeek, I die for any type of lounge that has outdoor seating with a beautiful view of the apron and runway. New York John F. Kennedy Terminal 4 Delta Sky Club and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Concourse F Delta Sky Club both offer Sky Decks with amazing apron and runway views and sounds making it an amazing hangout place, especially if you want to get some sun.

Delta Sky Club drinks

Delta Sky Clubs will also have free-flowing alcohol and soft drinks. Sometimes the Sky Club will offer ‘THE BAR’ with a free and paid menu or a self-service bar. There is a range of Coca-Cola products, juice, coffee, tea, liquor, beer, wine, and of course my favorite drink of them all, water.

LGA C28 Sky Club sparkling wine

Delta Sky Club food

Most Sky Clubs will offer snacks and light buffet stocked with a salad bar, hummus with pita chips, and soups bar able to make your own soup like Pho. At Delta hubs, it’s easy to fill up with hot foods like ravioli, pasta, steamed vegetables, Spanish rice, hash, roasted chicken, etc. (Once I was at a Sky Club that served hot dogs.)

Each Sky Club will offer something that is inspired by that region, as southern Sky Clubs will be influenced by southern cooking.

Showers and bathrooms

In the hygiene department, you can find private shower rooms at select Sky Clubs that are stocked with Malin+Goetz amenities to smell fresh.

Each Sky Club will offer bathrooms within the club that is also stocked with Malin+Goetz hand soap and lotion.

Help desk

Located near the entrance, you will find a Delta help desk that is able to handle anything Delta related. These desks are really helpful as they won’t get terribly congested during a bad storm as people scramble to change their flights.

WiFi

While WiFi is common throughout airports, it’s always nice to connect to WiFi that is somewhat more exclusive and typically faster than your average airport WiFi.

Delta Sky Club rules

For a full list of Sky Club rules, please read here. In this section, I will highlight the most relevant ones.

  • Monkeys, rabbits, pot-bellied pigs, reptiles, frogs, mice, rats, sugar gliders and spiders are not permitted.

  • Guidelines for service and emotional support animals.

Smoking

  • Smoking, chewing tobacco, smokeless tobacco and electronic cigarette use is not permitted in any Delta Sky Club. (Including on the Sky Deck)

As you probably noticed, most of these are common sense and subjective. Maybe the best rule would be, don’t be like this guy.

Like anything related to air travel, you might have more questions. I made an FAQ section answering questions that you might have about Delta Sky Clubs that weren’t answered above. (If you have any other questions, please drop them down in the comments below.)

Delta Sky Club FAQ

Can I buy Delta Sky Club day passes?

As of November 15, 2018, the sale of the $59/5,000 Single Visit Passes has been discontinued. However, if you hold an American Express co-branded Delta card, you can buy day passes for $39 per visit.

Can military personnel access Delta Sky Club for free?

Unforutally active or veteran military personnel cannot get complimentary Delta Sky Club access.

However, if you’re an active military officer, you can access other airline lounges. You can read more about the benefits you receive from Delta and other airlines for serving our country here.

How old do you have to be to access a Delta Sky Club?

Must be 21 years of age to access Clubs with a self-service bar, unless accompanied by a responsible, supervising adult who is also a Club member. Local age restrictions apply in non-US locations. For locations with a full-service bar, you only have to be 18 years of age.

What type of alcohol is free in a Delta Sky Club?

A range of alcoholic beverages is free in Delta Sky Clubs. There will be your selection of wine, sparkling wine, liquor, beer, and at full-service bars, there are cocktails available too.

If you don’t like alcohol, there is still a range of other drinks like Coca-Cola branded soft drinks, juices, teas, coffee, milk, and water.

Can I access the Delta Sky Club after I land?

Yes, you can access the Delta Sky Club after your flight flying Delta. I have done it personally and works great when I am connecting onto a non-Delta flight.

How much is a bottle of Dom Perignon Brut Champagne?

A 750ml bottle of Dom Perignon Brut Champagne is $250 or 12,500 SkyMiles. Which in my eyes is a good valuation as it makes your miles worth 2 cents per mile.

(Sometimes, you can get a bottle of Dom for $200 or 10,000 SkyMiles.)

Dom Perignon is also served on airlines like Singapore and Emirates in first class

Final word

The Delta Sky Club is one of my favorite domestic lounges that are currently being updated throughout the system. While Delta has no flagship lounge, like the United Polaris Lounge or American Airlines Flagship Lounge, Delta makes a more consistent decent domestic lounge that isn’t bad and better than other membership lounges like Admiral Clubs and United Clubs.

Delta Airlines Pet Policy Guide [2022]

Traveling with a pet can be complicated if you don’t understand the rules and regulations of the airlines and the countries you are traveling to. In this guide, I will not only take you through all that you need to know about Delta Airlines’ pet policy, but I’ll share the requirements, restrictions, and limitations of traveling to some popular countries as well.

What is the Delta Airlines pet policy?

Passengers can travel with their pets as a carry-on or ship them via Delta Cargo as long as they provide all the necessary carriers for the pet(s), supply any needed documents, and pay the fees. I’ll take you through all of these requirements in detail below.

Tip: Use the free app WalletFlo to help you travel the world for free by finding the best travel credit cards and promotions!

What are the fees for traveling with your pets as a carry-on with Delta Airlines?

Small dogs, cats, and household birds can all travel with you in the cabin for a one-way fee, collected each time you board a Delta Airlines flight. As per Delta Airlines policy, household birds are allowed on domestic U.S. flights only, excluding Hawaii, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

All animals must fit in a small, well-ventilated pet carrier that fits under the set in front of you. If your pet is too large to fit then you need to consider shipping through Delta Cargo which I have explained in a separate section later below.

Note: Pets in kennels brought in the cabin count as your one carry-on item. In addition to the kennel, Delta allows you to bring one personal item onboard the aircraft.

The following fees apply to/from the following destinations.

To/From DestinationChecked Pet Fee Each Way
U.S./Canada/Puerto Rico/U.S. Virgin Islands$95 USD/CAD for tickets issued on/after February 28, 2022. $125 USD/CAD for tickets issued before February 28, 2022
International$200 USD/CAD/EUR
Brazil$75 USD

CAD amount will be charged to exit Canada, while EUR amount will be charged to exit Europe. These fees are established by the contract of carriage in effect at the time of ticket issuance.

How to avoid Delta Airline pet fees

One of the simplest ways to avoid pet fees at Delta is to use the right travel rewards credit card. The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is a great card for general travel expenses and since these expenses will often code as travel points, it can be used to offset airline pet fees. Other cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve have a $300 travel credit that could be used on virtually any type of travel purchase, including pet fees.

Tip: Use WalletFlo for all your credit card needs. It’s free and will help you optimize your rewards and savings!

Carry-On Pet Exceptions and Embargos

When traveling to or from the following destinations on Delta, pets are only permitted to travel as cargo. There is, however, an exception for service animals. When traveling to Hawaii, pets are strictly not permitted in the cabin and other restrictions may also apply.

A good idea is to go through the current Delta pet travel restrictions based on your destination and/or connecting flights before you book your seats.

Exceptions

As of the date of publishing this post, there is a temporary suspension for dogs traveling within a 6 month period from countries that the CDC considers high risk for dog rabies. The only way around this is to obtain advance written approval from the CDC. This CDC Dog Import Permit applies to all carry-on pets, those traveling via cargo, and even service animals.

The following countries are on the exception list.

  1. Australia
  2. Barbados
  3. Brazil – Exit Brazil
  4. Colombia – Exit Colombia
  5. Dubai
  6. Hong Kong
  7. Iceland
  8. Jamaica
  9. New Zealand
  10. Republic of Ireland
  11. South Africa
  12. United Kingdom
  13. United Arab Emirates

Embargos

If you have a ticket that was purchased for travel from Brazil or Colombia to the U.S. on or after June 7th, 2021, carry-on pets will no longer be allowed with you. Tickets purchased before this date will be honored, however. This embargo does not apply to trained service animals.

Delta Airlines carry-on pet rules

If your furry friend is going to be accompanying you on a Delta flight then here are the rules you need to keep in mind

Cabin Restrictions

For the safety and comfort of all passengers, Delta Airlines allows a fixed number of pets on their aircraft. This means that acceptance is on a first-come, first-serve basis. You should call Delta in advance at 800-221-1212 to arrange to bring your pet on board.

Also, keep in mind that those traveling with a service animal or an emotional support animal will not be allowed to carry an additional pet in the cabin. For your reference, here is the total fixed number of pets Delta allows on their flights depending on the ticket class and destination .

Ticket ClassTotal number of pets per flightObservations
Domestic First Class including Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Guam
Domestic Business Class
Domestic Delta One
International First Class
2Carry on pets are not allowed in any cabin with flat-bed seats
International Business Class
International Delta One
Delta Premium Select
0Not Permitted at any time regardless of aircraft. The only exception is service animals
Main Cabin – Domestic and International4Restrictions may apply

Additionally, carry-on pets are not permitted in the following areas:

  • Bulkhead, emergency exit rows
  • Seats designated as “no stowage”
  • Flat-bed seats
  • Rows 30-35 on the A330-200 aircraft
  • Rows 30-43 on the A330 -300 aircraft
  • Center seats on the B757-200 aircraft

Emotional support animals and Service Animals

Starting January 11, 2021, Delta Airlines no longer recognizes emotional support animals as service animals. You can of course still carry them as a regular carry-on pet as per the rules and regulations.

Also starting January 11, 2021, Delta now only recognizes dogs as service animals. Travelers with disabilities who require a service animal must fill out the U.S. DOT Service Animal Air Travel Form. You can find Delta’s complete guide to service animals here.

Military and Foreign Service Officer’s Pets

As a special policy, pets traveling with active U.S. Military or Active U.S State Department Foreign Service Officers (FSO) or their spouses with active transfer orders are transported as checked baggage. For detailed information on the rules and regulations for this category, you can visit here.

Pet Comfort

All animals must be small enough to comfortably fit in their kennel and they must not touch or protrude from the sides of the kennel. Pets must also be able to move around comfortably in their container.

Please also note that the hard or soft-sided kennels must be leak-proof and have ventilation on 3 sides (4 sides if you are traveling to an international destination)

Sedation/ Tranquilizers

Sedating your animals is not recommended as the effects of pressurized cabins can be unpredictable. Sedation sometimes causes breathing issues with animals as well. In case you have sedated your pet please inform Delta Airlines crew before you board your flight.

Space and Size

All kennels must fit under the seat directly in front of you. Since the space under the seat in front varies from aircraft to aircraft, Delta recommends a soft-sided Kennel with maximum dimensions of 18” x 11” x 11” that will fit most aircraft.

Pet must always be in the container

Your pet must never leave the container whether you are at the airport, the Delta boarding area, a Delta airport lounge including Delta Sky Club, or onboard the aircraft. The doors to the kennel must always be secured properly.

Your pet’s age

For domestic travel, the pet must be at least 10 weeks. For travel to and from European countries, the pet must be 15 weeks or older. For all other international destinations, your pet must be at least 16 weeks old.

While there is no maximum age for your animal as it varies greatly from pet to pet, it is advised that aging pets should not be subjected to the stresses of air travel.

Animal breed restrictions

Brachycephalic (snub-nosed) dogs and cats and their mixes are not permitted on Delta or Delta Connection flights. See Delta Cargo, for a full list of embargoed dog and cat breeds.

Counts as a carry-on item

Your pet’s kennel will count as one carry-on item, meaning you will be allowed to bring only one additional personal item onboard the aircraft. Everything else must be checked in.

Exceptions to the single pet per kennel rule

  • Exception 1: A female dog or cat is allowed per kennel with her un-weaned litter. The litter must be a minimum of 10 weeks old to 6 months of age. There is no restriction on the number of animals in the litter.
  • Exception 2: You are allowed 2 pets of the same breed and size between the age of 10 weeks and 6 months in a kennel, provided that they are small enough to comfortably fit into the kennel and are compatible. In this case, they will be charged as 1 pet.

Delta Sky Club

All the above rules that apply to pets onboard aircraft also apply to any Delta Sky Club. Pets may never leave the container and if required a Delta representative can help you find a pet relief area that is available at most airports.

Delta Airlines cargo policy

Transporting your animal through cargo can be stressful for them. When you are bringing them along as a carry-on, at least you are there to comfort them. With cargo, they no longer have that comfort.

However, if you are in a situation where you cannot accompany your pet for some reason or if your pet is too large to be carried in the cabin then you will have to use cargo. Please note that the Animal Breed Restriction and tips on Sedation/ Tranquilizers mentioned above in carry-on rules, also apply to sending animals through cargo.

Do visit Delta’s International & Connections Pet Travel Guide for the latest rules and restrictions for all key international and long-haul destinations.

Health certificate

A current health certificate by a licensed veterinarian is required within 10 days of the travel date for your pet. It must have the following details.

  1. Name and address of the shipper.
  2. Tag numbers or tattoos assigned to the animal.
  3. Age of the animal being shipped: USDA regulations require animals to be at least 8 weeks old and fully weaned before traveling by cargo domestically, at least 16 weeks old before traveling to the U.S. from other countries, and at least 15 weeks old for European travel.
  4. A statement declaring the animal to be in good health (all animals that are pregnant must be declared in the statement).
  5. List of administered inoculations when applicable.
  6. Your veterinarian’s signature and seal (if applicable).
  7. Date of issue of the certificate.

Live Animal Checklist/Confirmation of Feeding

You must complete a live animal checklist when you bring your pet in for cargo at Delta Airlines. In it, you must confirm that the animal has been given food and water within four hours of check-in. Additionally, you have to provide feeding instructions and if your pet needs to be fed again during transit, you must provide the food as well.

Weather Requirements

Delta Airlines has a policy of not transporting pets during extreme temperatures for the safety of the animals themselves. This includes temperatures exceeding 80˚F (27˚C) or temperatures falling below 20˚F (-7˚C), at any point during the route. A Certificate of Acclimation is required when temperatures fall between 20˚F (-7˚C) and 45˚F (7˚C).

Final Word

The Delta Airlines pet travel policies are simple enough to understand. You will be paying between $75 and $200 depending on your destination. You must ensure to follow all the rules and observe the restrictions that we have listed above and you will be set to go.

Delta Sky Club PHX (Terminal 3) Review [2022]

Almost all of my flying around the US has been on United, American, and Southwest. But recently we decided to dabble with Delta and our flight started off with a visit to the Delta Sky Club at PHX.

It was a nice morning lounge visit and below I’ll break down the whole experience so that you’ll know what to expect when you visit this lounge found in Terminal 3.

Trip overview

This Delta Sky Club visit was the beginning of a fast-paced trip where we flew Delta First Class from PHX to BWI with a connection in MSP.

The goal of this trip was to finally explore the Northeast.

We rented a car and spent eight days hitting up 13 states in the northeast region and exploring some of the fall color change along the way.

Taking advantage of great October weather, we also checked out the National Mall in DC, Salem Witch Trial sites, and caught a game at Fenway.

Some of the interesting hotels we stayed out included:

Getting through the airport

We had bags to check and, while we were flying Delta first class, the baggage check-in experience was a little underwhelming.

That’s because the line was backed up and with only a couple of staff members it appeared to be going even slower than the standard line.

It ended up being that classic scenario where you don’t realize another line is moving quicker until you have already progressed quite a way in your own line, so we just stayed put.

The good news is that we breezed through security with TSA Pre-Check and CLEAR.

Delta Sky Club Location

The Delta Sky Club is located in Terminal 3, across from gate F8.

Terminal 3 serves Delta Airlines among many other airlines at this American Airlines hub.

The entire Terminal 3 South Concourse consists of 15 gates and was opened in early 2019 which is the same time this lounge opened up.

It’s a pretty nice little airport terminal if you ask me with some notable eating spots like Shake Shack and Panera Bread.

Related: Delta Sky Club Guide: (Access & List of Locations)

As mentioned, you will find the lounge across from gate F8, just after you pass up Shake Shack. The entrance to the Sky Club doesn’t stick out that much but you still shouldn’t struggle to find its clear blue doors.

Access & hours

The lounge is open daily from 5:15am to 12am.

We got in to the Delta Sky Club at PHX free of charge with our Amex Platinum cards.

With the Amex Platinum, you can get free access to Delta Sky Clubs but the catch is you have to be flying Delta that day.

Your guest cannot get in for free but you can pay to get up to two guests in at a discounted rate of $39.

In this case, I had made Bradley an authorized user on the Platinum Card so he had his own Platinum Card and was able to get in for free.

The authorized user fee is $175 for up to three users which actually turns out to be a pretty good deal if you can max it out.

We were flying domestic first class to MSP where we would have a layover and then another short first class flight to BWI. Unfortunately, like other domestic airlines, you don’t get lounge access automatically when flying first class domestically.

If you want to look into other ways to get access you can check out the access policy here.

Lounge

Opened in early 2019, the 7,500-square-foot Delta Sky Club boasts design “inspired by the Southwest desert landscape.”

As someone who recently moved to Arizona in the spring of 2020, the look and feel of all things Southwest has grown on me exponentially. So I was interested to see what they did with the lounge.

Throughout the lounge you’ll find earth tones with pops of rich colors and some of the walls showcase artwork from local artists. The Southwest influence is definitely there but it’s still pretty subtle in my opinion.

There’s a small printer station in one of the corners which was out of order when we visited.

The center of the lounge has a beautiful modern chandelier with a lot of seating options that to be honest looked a tad bit crowded.

I would say that this airport lounge is one of the more beautiful airport lounges I’ve seen for a domestic airline. I loved the aviation artwork and overall peaceful color scheme.

American and United have also done a pretty good job of renovating and giving their new lounges a fresh modern feel. To see what I mean check out a couple of the photos below.

Here’s an image from one of the newer Admirals Clubs:

And here is one of the newer United Clubs:

At the end of the Delta Sky Club there is a long wall with decent views of the neighboring gates but I believe the closest runway is on the other side of the terminal so you don’t get those close/direct views.

Along the wall, you’ll find a long conference table with plenty of outlets for getting work done.

Most of the seats had power outlets or USB ports near the seats. So charging your devices should not be an issue but I would still be careful with plugging directly into USBs.

There’s a TV on both sides of the main central living area, which again felt a little bit cluttered with the seating.

After scoping out some of the seats we decided to head to the back where the bar is. Since this was still really early in the morning, the bar was not open and not serving alcohol.

But if you do come during later hours you can take advantage of seasonal cocktails including the Agave Experience – “an extensive selection of tequila and mezcal that can be sampled in individual pours or tasting flights.”

They also have wine selected by Delta’s Master Sommelier Andrea Robinson.

It looks like they had removed a couple of seats from the bar area for social distancing.

However, there were still a lot of seating options in this section of the lounge. If you need a power outlet consider getting a spot at one of the high counter seats located next to the partition.

Personally, I really like the vibe of this wooded area.

Dining

We passed on breakfast and so I was really interested to see what type of food we would be able to enjoy at the lounge.

I was happy to see that there was a self-serve line and that they had some pretty hearty options like this breakfast casserole along with sausage and scrambled eggs.

You could also go with hard boiled eggs and throw in a little bit of red salsa if you wanted.

They had a nice little section of fresh fruit including pineapple, cantaloupe, and melon along with grapes and strawberries. And to my surprise they even had blueberries, blackberries and raspberries.

Overall, the breakfast options were much superior to what I experienced at non-hub Admirals Club lounges when arriving early for breakfast. I could actually fill up if I wanted do at this lounge versus just getting by with light bites.

There was a whole mixture of yogurt including plain Greek yogurt and vanilla yogurt.

And if you were looking for cereal they had Cheerios, raisin bran, and rice crispies. The cereal dispensers were tricky for some people so my pro tip is to be a little gentle with the levers. I almost witnessed an early-morning disaster.

There’s a soda machine with Coke products including Coke Zero, Dr Pepper, Minute Maid lemonade, and ginger ale.

You could also pour up some fresh orange juice which can be found next to the utensil dispenser. They had a sparkling water machine but I was not able to get it to work which resulted in pouring a glass of some very pathetically carbonated water.

We grabbed our food and then locked down a table in the corner area which gave us plenty of space from other travelers as the lounge did not have much traffic this early in the morning.

Shortly after we sat down to eat there was a morning surge that came in and then also quickly thinned out after only about 20 to 30 minutes.

The lounge seemed to have pretty decent views of some of the other gates where we found Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines.

However, given the morning hour there wasn’t much to see beyond our own reflections in the window.

I took a quick visit to the bathroom which was very clean and modern. It’s always a good feeling to avoid those airport terminal bathrooms.

Final word

Overall, this was a very solid lounge experience. I thought that the lounge was beautiful, clean, and not overcrowded. The breakfast was hearty and had some nice additional options like fresh berries. The Wi-Fi was fast and there were no issues with anything really. Just a great lounge visit.

$100 Delta Flight Credit Guide: Worth It? [2021]

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold Card is a very popular airline credit card — no doubt. It comes with a number of benefits like some pretty decent bonus categories, 20% back on in-flight purchases, and free checked bags. But one benefit that stands out is the $100 Delta flight credit. But how does this credit actually work and is it really worth it? In this article, I will break it all down for you.

Offers contained within this article maybe expired.

What is the $100 Delta flight credit?

The $100 Delta flight credit is a special credit issued to select Delta credit cardholders that spend $10,000 or more in a calendar year on their Delta SkyMiles Gold Card.

Tip: Use WalletFlo for all your credit card needs. It’s free and will help you optimize your rewards and savings!

Delta exit row 16 economy

Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold overview

  • 2X on Delta
  • 2X on restaurants
  • 2X on US supermarkets
  • First Checked Bag Free
  • Priority Boarding
  • $100 flight credit
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • $99 annual fee that is often waived the first year.

Limitations to the credit

The $100 credit can be used on purchases of Delta-marketed flights made on delta.com or with Delta Reservations. The credit may also be applied toward the Delta airfare portion of a Delta Vacations package.

Something to note is that this $100 credit is only valid for the payment of tickets which include the fare, surcharge, and government-imposed taxes and fees imposed on the air transportation.

This means that you cannot use the credit for incidental expenses which would be things like baggage fees, change fees, unaccompanied minor fees, upgrades or any other type of ancillary purchase. That type of limitation is pretty standard for an airline credit like this so it’s not a major drawback.

Expiration

Your $100 Delta credit will expire one year from the date of issuance. Note: it might take up to two weeks after meeting the spending requirement for the credit to be issued.

Tip: If you would like to avoid potential complications with delayed credits, make sure that the name on your American Express card matches with the name on your Delta SkyMiles account.

You must make your redemption on or before the expiration date but you don’t have to use it all on one single redemption. If you are able to find a really cheap flight and you still have credit left over from your $100 credit you will still be able to use the residual value in another transaction as long as that transaction occurs before the expiration date.

Your credit will be sent to you in the form of a Delta eCredit. You will be able to find this credit in “My Profile” on delta.com under “Certificates, eCredits, and Vouchers.”

The certificate number, a redemption code, and redemption instructions will also be sent to the email address listed on your Delta SkyMiles account.

Each member will be limited to one credit per calendar year.

you cannot transfer this credit to another member but you can apply it towards someone else’s ticket. Also, you can combine this credit with up to two additional Delta eCredits.

Product changes

If you were to product change from a different type of Delta SkyMiles Card product to the Delta SkyMiles Gold Card, any eligible purchases that you made on your prior Delta card during the calendar year will count towards your $10,000 spend requirement (but only after you make your first transaction on the new card).

So if you spent $6,000 on your Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Card and then downgraded to the Delta SkyMiles Gold Card, you would only need to spend $4,000 more to earn the $100 credit.

Authorized users

This benefit is only available to the primary cardmember but purchases made by authorized users will count towards the purchase requirement. Remember, you can use the credit to cover a flight for anybody so in effect you can still use this credit for an authorized user.

Is the $100 Delta flight credit worth it?

The annual fee for the Delta SkyMiles Gold Card is $99 so taking advantage of this benefit can completely offset the annual fee. From that perspective, this benefit can clearly be worth it.

The issue is that it requires you to spend $10,000 in a calendar year for only $100 in rewards. If you were to spend $15,000 in a calendar year you could earn a free night with Hilton which could be worth several hundred dollars or even over $1,000 if optimized fully.

So in terms of bang for buck you’re not getting a whole lot for your spend.

With that said, if you already had plans to put $10,000 in spend on a Delta card then you might as well take advantage of this perk and it could be well worth it in that case. I just don’t think I would go out of my way to earn a $100 credit considering the alternatives — and that’s without even factoring in welcome bonuses you can earn.

Final word

Overall, this is a pretty simple perk that is easy to earn and use. I’m not crazy about the value you get in return for so much spend but it is a benefit that completely offsets your annual fee with one use and I always like to see those perks. I think if you are somebody already putting a good amount of spend on your Delta card, then this benefit can be well worth it. But if you are eyeing other alternatives, chances are you can find a better return in value for your spend.

Delta SkyMiles Value Guide [2021]

Over the years, Delta SkyMiles have caught a lot of flak. That’s because many people don’t believe that the miles (or “SkyPesos”) are worth that much relative to other airline programs. But are Delta miles really as worthless as everyone some people say?

In this article, I’ll break down the Delta SkyMiles valuation based on recent data points, and I’ll also show you how to get maximum value for your Delta SkyMiles along with some great redemptions.

How much are Delta SkyMiles worth?

Based on over 60 data points, Delta SkyMiles are worth 1.62 cents per point. However, the value can often range from 1.12 cents per mile to over two cents per mile.

Broken down by class, here are the averages we arrived at after analyzing the data points:

  • Main Cabin: 1.5
  • Comfort+: 1.19
  • Delta One/First: 2.18

How to earn Delta SkyMiles

It is extremely easy to build up a large balance of Delta SkyMiles if you play your cards right. That’s because there are multiple personal and business credit cards for Delta.

In fact, there are seven different Delta SkyMiles co-branded American Express credit cards available for you to grab.

  • Blue Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card
  • Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card (full review)
  • Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card (full review)
  • Delta Reserve® Credit Card
  • Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card
  • Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card
  • Delta Reserve® for Business Credit Card

The welcome bonuses for these cards changes all the time so the key is to wait until you come across a great welcome bonus. Typically, I would generally wait to find a bonus on a Delta card at 60,000 miles or higher.

However, in some cases you might be more interested in the benefits of the Delta card and in that instance it could be worth just jumping on the card immediately.

That’s because you could be earning miles that count toward elite status or taking advantage of other perks like the companion certificate.

The other major way to earn Delta miles is to get an American Express card that earns Membership Rewards. You can then transfer your points to Delta at a one to one ratio which will allow you to stockpile miles even quicker.

I would look into cards like the American Express Gold Card (full review) and the American Express Platinum Card (full review).

Getting the most value

It’s possible to get much more value with Delta SkyMiles than 1.62 cents per point.

If you use your points on international routes, especially in premium cabins, you can get significantly more value.

For example, I found redemptions on Delta one [Manchester (MAN) to Los Angeles (LAX)] with over 12 cents per point in value. I’ve also used Sky Miles in the past to fly on some great bang for buck business class redemptions like on Virgin Atlantic.

So with Delta, the value is there you just have to search a little bit harder to find it. We put together a list of some of the best Delta redemptions so be sure to check out that list.

Data points

We always make sure that we back up our valuation claims with hard data so we analyzed over 60 data points involving Delta SkyMiles redemptions in the US and abroad.

We did different redemptions for Main Cabin, Comfort Plus, and Delta One/First. We focused mostly on the cheapest award prices available but in some cases we were not able to use those and slightly higher lower prices were factored in.

You can check out all of the cash price and award prices that we found below. We also have a chart that breaks down the cents per point per route.

Final word

Overall, I was a little bit surprised to see the valuation at 1.6 cents per point. I typically value Delta miles closer to 1.3 cents but after testing out all of these routes, it looks like SkyMiles might hold a bit more value than a lot of people including myself have thought.

Delta Credit Card Free Checked Bag Guide [2021]

Offers contained within this article maybe expired.

When it comes to airline credit card perks, the free checked bag perk is a common benefit to find and can be one of the most valuable, especially if used on a consistent basis. But these free baggage benefits come with some restrictions and if you are not careful, you might miss out on the free baggage waiver. In this article, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about the Delta credit cards free checked baggage benefit.

What is the Delta credit card free checked baggage benefit?

If you hold an eligible American Express Delta credit card, you can get the first checked bag fee waived on eligible Delta flights for you and up to eight other passengers.

Tip: Check out the free app WalletFlo so that you can optimize your credit card spend by seeing the best card to use! You can also track credits, annual fees, and get notifications when you’re eligible for the best cards!

Eligible Delta credit cards

The following credit cards are eligible for the free baggage waiver on Delta flights:

  • Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card (full review)
  • Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card (full review)
  • Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card (full review)

In addition, the following business credit cards are eligible for the free baggage waiver on Delta flights:

  • Delta SkyMiles Gold Business American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business American Express Card

Reservation restrictions

You do not have to book your reservation with your American Express Delta credit card in order to get the benefit.

Instead, the only requirement is that the reservation must include the basic card member’s SkyMiles number.

As long as that SkyMiles number is on the reservation, the fee waiver will also be available for other travelers on the same reservation. There is a maximum of nine waivers allowed per reservation.

Note: There are some reports of people getting the free checked baggage waiver for multiple passengers even when they are on different reservations but that may come down to an agent’s discretion and so I would not count on it working.

If you have a checked bag that is overweight or oversized you will have to pay for those fees. Keep in mind that you will be charged for each infraction separately.

So if you had a checked bag that was both overweight and oversized you would have to pay for an overweight fee and an oversized fee. You cannot use the free checked bag benefit to get these fees waived. The waiver only works for normal bags.

Sometimes the oversized and overweight fees can be very expensive, especially when coupled together. So be sure you are aware of the weight and size limitations which are often based on your elite status or the type of cabin you are flying in.

The free checked bag waiver is only good for the first checked bag. So if a passenger is checking an additional bag, they will have to pay for that fee themselves. The normal fee for a second bag will apply in that case.

So let’s say you were flying from Atlanta to Los Angeles and you were checking two bags. Normally, you would have to pay $70 for those two bags. But if you had an eligible Delta card the fee for the first bag would be waived.

However, for the second bag you would have to pay $40 which is the standard price for the second checked bag. There is a calculator you can use if you are ever in doubt.

Eligible flights

The first checked bag fee waiver can only be used on flight segments that originate on a Delta or Delta Connection carrier when you check-in with Delta for both a Delta marketed and Delta operated flight.

It’s really important to note that code share flights are not eligible.

So these rules mean if you were booking a flight that was operated by Delta but marketed by a partner like Air France, you would likely not receive the free checked bag benefit. This situation could arise when booking a Delta flight on a partner website like Air France.

Also, if you were booking a flight on the Delta website that was operated by a partner like Virgin Atlantic, you would also not receive the free checked bag.

So my advice would be to book directly through the Delta website and to ensure that the flights are operated by Delta.

You can tell what airline is operating the flight when you are searching for flights on the Delta website. Simply look for the language directly below the route graphic as shown in the image below.

An example of a flight not operated by Delta.

Elite status stacking

Unofficially, Silver Medallion members may be able to stack this free checked baggage benefit with the Silver benefit. This means that if you have Silver Medallion status, you could get a total of two free checked bags. (It does not appear to also stack with Gold Medallion status or higher.)

Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold Review [2020]

Offers contained within this article maybe expired.

The Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold is an entry-level airline credit card designed for those interested in Delta Air Lines and its partners. It may not have the best benefits in the world but there are some good perks that come with this card and sometimes you can catch terrific welcome bonuses.

In this review article, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about the Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold and I’ll share how I’ve used it in the past for some pretty unforgettable travels.

Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold overview

  • 2X on Delta
  • 2X on restaurants
  • 2X on US supermarkets
  • First Checked Bag Free
  • Priority Boarding
  • $100 flight credit
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • $99 annual fee that is often waived the first year.

Welcome bonus

The Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold welcome bonus changes all the time.

I’ve seen the bonus range from around 30,000 miles all the way up to close to 75,000 miles (sometimes these bonuses may also come with an additional statement credit so be on the lookout for those). So this is the type of travel rewards credit card that you want to try to jump on at the most opportune time.

If it were me applying, I would strive to get at least 60,000 miles with the welcome bonus. That is what I have gotten in the past and I was able to put those miles towards a redemption that got me from Los Angeles to London in business class for only around five dollars in fees on partner Virgin Atlantic.

Curious how much these miles are worth? Check out the valuation here.

Tip: If you are wondering what type of redemptions you can get with your Delta Sky Miles, I recommend that you read up on our best uses of Delta Sky Miles.

Bonus categories

  • 2X on Delta
  • 2X on restaurants
  • 2X on US supermarkets

2X on Delta

Earning two times the points on Delta is pretty standard for a co-branded airline credit card. Of course, if you wanted to increase your earnings on Delta purchases, you could look into getting the Delta SkyMiles Platinum. That card earns an impressive 3X on every Delta purchase.

But if you are truly trying to maximize the amount of points earned on airfare, it’s hard to not go with the American Express Platinum Card because that card earns 5X on airfare. The added bonus of going with that card is that you will be earning valuable Membership Rewards which can be transferred out to various travel partners.

2X on restaurants

Earning two times the points at restaurants is okay but I choose to rack up many more points on my dining purchases by using the American Express Gold Card which earns 4X Membership Rewards on every purchase.

4X is really the minimum amount of bonus points I would accept for dining now that so many cards offer a strong rewards on dining purchases.

2X on US supermarkets

Getting 2X at US supermarkets is once again okay but you can do much better with the American Express Gold Card which earns 4X Membership Rewards on every purchase up to $25K every year.

So overall the bonus earning potential with this card is pretty mediocre. You should definitely consider other cards for these bonus categories which can rack up Delta miles much quicker.

Perks

First Checked Bag Free

With the Delta SkyMiles Gold card you will get your first checked bag for free for yourself and also for passengers traveling on the same reservation. There is a maximum of nine waivers per reservation.

Baggage fees for Delta will usually cost $30 for your first checked bag so this can amount to pretty solid savings if you fly a lot. Keep in mind that this benefit is only for the primary cardmember and not authorized users.

Priority Boarding

With the Delta SkyMiles Gold card, you will receive Main Cabin 1 Priority Boarding on Delta flights. This benefit is limited to the basic cardmember and not authorized users. However, you can get this benefit for other travelers on the same reservation (up to nine passengers per reservation).

Here’s a look at all of the Delta boarding groups in the order in which they board:

  • Delta One
  • Delta Premium Select or First Class
  • Delta Comfort+
  • Sky Priority
  • Main cabin one
  • Main cabin two
  • Main cabin three
  • Basic Economy

You can find out more about the Delta boarding process here.

$100 flight credit

When you make $10,000 in purchases on your card in a calendar year, you’ll receive a $100 Delta Flight Credit.

You’ll be able to use this credit on Delta marketed flights and also toward the Delta airfare portion of a Delta Vacations package. The credit cannot be used for fees like baggage fees, change fees, unaccompanied minor fees, etc. Keep in mind that you will have one year to use this credit before it expires.

The Credit will be issued as a Delta eCredit, which will be available in My Profile on delta.com under Certificates, eCredits, and Vouchers. You are allowed to combine this with up to two other Delta eCredits. While the credit is available to the primary cardmember, authorized users’ spend can count towards the purchase requirement.

My biggest issue with this benefit is that you have to spend $10,000 in order to get a $100 benefit so this is basically giving you a 1% return. That’s not terribly impressive in my opinion.

If you were to put $15,000 worth spend on a card like the Hilton Surpass, you could get a free night to use at Hilton properties which could be worth close to $1,000. So be sure to consider alternatives for your bonus spend rewards.

20% discount

You can get a 20% discount in the form of a statement credit on eligible pre-purchased meals, and in-flight purchases of food, alcoholic beverages and audio headsets, on Delta-operated flights. Just note that in-flight Wi-Fi does not trigger the credit.

Benefits and protections

Baggage Insurance Plan

Most states will provide you with coverage depending on the type of baggage that you have. For carry-ons you can get up to $1,250 worth of coverage and for checked bags you can get coverage up to $500 subject to terms and conditions.

Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance

Rental car coverage will be secondary with this card. Secondary coverage is pretty standard for a co-branded airline credit card but there are some cards issued by Chase that offer primary coverage. For example, the Chase Sapphirre Preferred will get you primary rental car coverage and its annual fee is only $95.

Extended Warranty

American Express will extend your warranty one additional year on warranties up to five years.

Purchase Protection

You’ll get purchase protection on purchases up to $1,000. This is not very competitive purchase protection as other cards will cover you up to $10,000 per purchase.

Overall, these travel protections and purchase protections are not the most competitive. I would definitely consider going for other premium cards that offer better quality protections if things like trip cancellation and baggage delay protection are important to you.

Additional benefits

Yes, you can look into downgrading your card to the no annual fee Amex Delta SkyMiles Blue.

Do you earn MQMs with the bonus?

No, you will not earn MQMs. However, the Delta Platinum card often offers something like 5,000 MQMs after spending $2,000 in the first three months.

Final word

The Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold is a pretty basic co-branded airline credit card. It really stands out when it has a high welcome bonus of 60,000 miles or more and it can be a great way to quickly accumulate Delta miles. It doesn’t offer a whole lot in the benefits department but if you are interested in Delta benefits you might look at the Delta Platinum card or the Delta Reserve.

Delta Airlines Status Match Challenge Guide [2020]

Gaining airline elite status these days is still easier if you have elite status with a competitor to that airline. Airlines want to take other competitors’ elite passengers as they are returning passengers. Delta Airlines is no exception and offers a status match challenge to elites from other airlines.

In this article, I will go over Delta Airlines status match challenge requirements, how to match for the challenge, and how to keep your status for up to a year and half.

Does Delta Airlines offer a status match or challenge?

Technically, Delta offers both a status match and a challenge. Delta calls it a status match challenge. If you’re eligible to match, you can keep the status you matched to with Delta for 3 months, but if you want to extend it, you can do so by meeting certain requirements with gaining MQMs/MQSs and MQDs, which I explain more below.

Tip: Use the free app WalletFlo to help you travel the world for free by finding the best travel credit cards and promotions!

How the Delta Medallion status match challenge work?

Delta Airlines Medallion status match challenge is as easy as filling out a form and submitting qualified proof of your status with a competitor airline. (Example airlines status.)

Once submitted, your request for the status match challenge will usually be processed in five business days, but can take up to two weeks during certain times of the year.

How long can you get to keep Medallion status?

When Delta approves your status match challenge, you get to keep the status for three months (90 days).

During the 3 months (90 days) of your status match challenge period, you have the option to earn MQMs/MQSs and MQDs that allow you to extend your status. When you enrolled into the status match challenge will determine your length of your status match that you got from completing the challenge requirements.

  • If you enrolled in the challenge between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019 and you complete the requirements, your Medallion Status will be extended through January 31, 2020.
  • If you enroll in the challenge on or after July 1, 2019 and you complete the requirements, your Medallion Status will be extended through January 31, 2021.

Requirements to extend the status match longer than 3 months (90 days)

These requirements below are only available if you are approved for the status match challenge. Once approved, you have 90 days to complete the requirements for the status that you are matched to or tiers below.

Delta Medallion status match challenge requirements
Silver MedallionGold MedallionPlatinum Medallion

$750 MQDs or MQD Waiver* $1,500 MQDs or MQD Waiver* $2,250 MQDs or MQD Waiver*

So, if I was matched to Gold Medallion status, I can only receive Gold status even if I got the MQMs and MQDs for Platinum. If I matched to Gold status, but only got enough MQMs and MQDs for Silver status, I would get Silver status.

If you were not part of the status match challenge, the requirements are less than the normal Medallion requirements.

Delta Medallion status regular requirements

$3,000 MQDs or MQD Waiver*$6,000 MQDs or MQD Waiver*$9,000 MQDs or MQD Waiver*

As you can see, both sets of requirements are very different, but you need to keep in mind that the qualification period requirements for the status match challenge are only over 90 days while the normal status qualification period requirements is over the whole year. So, timing your status match challenge is key when you have many Delta or partner flights booked.

* MQD Waiver is given if you spend $25,000 on any of Delta co-branded American Express cards.

What level of Medallion status can you get?

Delta provides a status comparison chart with major airlines across the world.

In the Delta Medallion status match challenge, you can only get Silver, Gold, or Platinum Medallion status. Diamond Medallion status is not given via the status match challenge as it’s held for the most loyal Delta customers.

The Medallion status match challenge is not limited to these airlines below. Any airline (excluding Delta Airlines partners) is eligible for the Medallion status match challenge.

Elevated status match

It’s possible that sometimes Delta may offer an elevated status match that gives you an even more advantageous status match.

It’s an especially attractive offer because it may give you a chance to earn the top status known as Diamond.

How to submit a status match for Delta Airlines

With two easy steps, Delta Airlines makes it one of the easiest airlines that allows status matching and a challenge. Before proceeding, I suggest reading the section above “How the Delta Medallion status match challenge work?” as it explains requirements for the Delta Medallion status match challenge.

You first need to make sure you’re eligible and after that you fill out the Medallion status match challenge form.

Determine your eligibility

  • Reached elite status with eligible airline through normal means and not through promotions or complimentary.
  • The airline you status match from cannot be be a Delta partner airline, but any other airline status could work for the Delta Medallion status match challenge.
  • Must currently have elite status with the other airline you status match from.
  • Must have qualifying activity from the airline you status match from.
  • You have not received a Status Match or complimentary Medallion Status in the past three years, unless the complimentary Medallion Status was through your Million Miler Status.

With Delta, you have to provide two pieces of information. The first is your current active membership card. This could be a screenshot of your online membership card or status summary page showing your name and credentials. The second is your statement/activity showing how you earned the status without any promotions.

Once you have have figured out if you’re eligible, you can proceed to the next step.

Fill out the form and wait

You can access the Delta Medallion status match challenge form here

As you can see below or from the link I provided above, the form is very simple. Delta allows lots of flexibility and any non-partner of Delta can be used for the status match. Once you fill out the form, you must also attach two supporting documents before submitting your request.

The two supporting documents that Delta needs with your request is:

  1. A valid, current elite physical or digital membership card or credential with your name on it.
  2. A statement showing your earned elite status with an airline and the corresponding activity with that airline that made you achieve that status, with your name on it.

For both of these materials, you may upload a photograph, screenshot of your app or computer screen, or other file format as long as it clearly shows the required information, your elite status level, and your name.

Once you submit your request for the Delta Medallion status match challenge, Delta claims it usually takes 5 business days, but can take as long as 2 weeks.

The email address you provided will get the approval or rejection email from Delta for the Medallion status match challenge once they made a verdict.

No Membership card for Platinum Medallions

You will not receive a Platinum Medallion membership card for your status match challenge during the first 90 days. However, you will still retain many of the the benefits.

If you complete the challenge and extend your status, you will receive your membership card.

Silver and Gold Medallions don’t ever get membership cards.

Tip: Use WalletFlo for all your credit card needs. It’s free and will help you optimize your rewards and savings!

Missing benefits for Platinum Medallions

During the 90-day Medallion status match challenge, you don’t receive any of the Choice Benefits with Platinum Medallion.

If you complete the challenge and extend your status, you will have an option to pick Choice Benefits.

Any partner counts, as long as the fare is eligible

  • MQMs, MQSs and MQDs earned on Delta- and Delta Connection-operated flights will count towards this challenge. MQMs, MQSs and MQDs may also be earned on partner airline flights that are eligible to earn MQMs, MQSs and MQDs.

As Delta’s terms indicate, you can fly Delta or a partner of Delta Airlines. Of course, not every partner fare earns MQMs, MQSs, and MQDs, so it’s up to you to find out if the partner you fly is eligible for earning them. You can check partners here.

Your best chance for earning MQMs, MQSs, and MQDs is by flying one of the airlines that are in a joint venture (JV) with Delta. Promising partners would be Korean Air, Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Australia, China Eastern, and Aeromexico.

Matched limitations

So let’s say that you were matched to Silver Medallion status but then you went ahead and overachieved and met the (status challenge) MQMs/MQSs and MQDs requirements for Gold Medallion.

If that were to happen you would still be matched to Silver Medallion status.

Since you were matched in a lower tier, you cannot be eligible for the status match challenge shortcut to Medallion status in higher tiers. However, if you matched into Gold Medallion and fall short for the Gold Medallion status match challenge requirements, you will be given Silver Medallion status as it’s a lower tier than the one you received during the status match challenge 90 days.

Final word

For anyone with existing status and want to extend their status to Delta Airlines with flights coming up in the next 90 days, the Delta Medallion status match challenge could be perfect. However, you must time your status match challenge accordingly with qualifying flights.

Do you think it’s worth to switch from a competing airline that you have status with and become a Delta loyalist?

Delta Airlines Flight Change and Cancellation Guide [Coronavirus 2020 update]

Delta Airlines might be known for their great on-time performance and service, but Delta is definitely not known for their generous change and cancellation policies. You will often face fees and restrictions with changing or canceling tickets.

In this article, I will discuss Delta Airlines change and cancellation policies for basic economy, refundable, and non-refundable tickets for main cabin, comfort+, first class, premium select, and Delta One seats. I will then show you step-by-step how to make a change your Delta flights and how to cancel your flights.

Delta Airlines flight change policy

Below are the change policies and change fees for Delta Airlines.

Update: Delta eliminated change fees for travel within the domestic U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands in Delta’s First Class, domestic Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin, with the exception of Basic Economy tickets.

24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation/Change

Any ticket is eligible for free changes and cancellation within 24 hours of the flight purchase date.

Basically, Delta holds the ticket for 24 hours and then charges you once the 24 hours is up. Therefore, your purchase will post to your credit card statement with a 24 hour delay. However, Delta will hold the funds on your credit card.

This means if you buy the ticket on December 14th at 7:00pm, you have till December 15th at 11:59pm to change/cancel (or also defined as midnight as it quotes in the terms and conditions.)

Cancellation request must be made by midnight of the day after the eTicket is purchased or midnight of the departure date of the first flight, whichever comes first. Cancellation request must be made before travel commences for the first flight. Available only for eTickets purchased at the time of reservation through Delta ticket offices and airport ticket counters, Reservation Sales, or at delta.com.

This could give you a little more than 24 hours to change or cancel your ticket made directly through Delta. Do note, tickets made through travel agencies like Expedia, Priceline, Orbits, etc. will have to go through the travel agency’s 24 hours change and cancellation policy.

Prices

Fees will be per passenger for the whole itinerary.

Basic economy tickets aren’t permitted to change tickets 24 hours past the purchase of the ticket.

Non-refundable tickets change fees can range from $200 to $500 depending on the location you’re traveling to. Plus, the price difference. Same-day flight changes fees are $75. (Same-day change fee is waived for Gold, Platinum, and Diamond Medallions.)

  • International ticket change fees range from $200 to $500 (the fee depends on the length of the flight, location, and type of fare)

Refundable tickets have no change fees, but you will still need to pay the price difference. Same-day flight changes fees are $75. (Same-day change fee is waived for Gold, Platinum, and Diamond Medallions.)

Award tickets change fees is a flat fee of $150. (The fee is waived for Platinum and Diamond Medallions.)

Deadline

Basic economy tickets changes must be made within the 24-hour risk-free cancellation/change policy. Otherwise, you aren’t allowed to make any more changes.

Non-refundable tickets changes without fees must be made within the 24-hour risk-free cancellation/change policy. Changes made past 24 hours of the ticket purchase are subject to change fees. Changes within 24 hours of the departure are only eligible within the US, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands.

Refundable tickets changes can be made anytime until 24 hours before the departure of your flight. Changes within 24 hours of the departure are only eligible within the US, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands.

Award tickets, changes can only be made at least 72 hours in advance of the departure or return of the flight.

Price changes

Flight changes will be subjected to price differences if the value of the new ticket is higher than the original, no matter if you have a refundable or non-refundable ticket, you will have to pay the difference in ticket value. Ticket values that are less in price than the original ticket value, you will receive as an eCredit if your ticket is non-refundable. Refundable tickets will receive a refund of the fare difference.

For example, if you hold a refundable ticket that originally cost $500 and change the flight that now costs $400, you will be refunded $100. However, if you change the flight that costs $600, you will be charged $100 since the value of the new ticket is higher. (The same concept applies to non-refundable tickets, but you have to take into account the change fees.)

Delta Airlines cancellation and refund policy

Like above, Delta Airlines isn’t pursuing cheap cancellation fees. Delta cancellation and refund policies are similar to Delta’s change policy. Therefore, some will be repetitive.

Time PeriodBasic Economy FareNon-Refundable TicketRefundable/Flex Ticket
During 24 Hour Risk-Free Cancellation PeriodNo ChargeNo ChargeNo Charge
After 24 Hour Risk-Free Cancellation PeriodNot PermittedRemaining Value Minus $200-$500 Cancellation Fee*Refundable

Basic economy tickets cancellations after 24 hours the purchase of the ticket aren’t permitted.

Non-refundable tickets cancellation fees can range from $200 to $500 depending on the location you’re traveling to.

  • Domestic ticket cancelation fees are a flat $200 (within the 50 US, Canada, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands)
  • International ticket cancellation fees range from $200 to $500 (the fee depends on the length of the flight, location, and type of fare)

Refundable tickets have no cancellation fees.

Award tickets cancellation fees are a flat fee of $150. (The fee is waived for Platinum and Diamond Medallions.)

Deadline

Basic economy tickets cancellations must be made within the 24-hour risk-free cancellation/change policy. Otherwise, you aren’t allowed to cancel your ticket.

Non-refundable tickets cancellations without fees must be made within the 24-hour risk-free cancellation/change policy. Cancellations made past 24 hours of the ticket purchase are subject to cancellation fees.

Refundable tickets cancellations can be made anytime before the departure of your flight.

Award tickets, cancellations can only be made at least 72 hours in advance of the departure or return of the flight.

Refunds

Non-refundable tickets refunds are issued as a credit. Therefore, you can only use it with Delta, similar to how one would use a gift card. You can access your eCredits here.

Refundable tickets refunds are issued as a refund to your payment method. If you used a credit card, the refund would go back to your credit card.

If you have any trip extras or seats that you have purchased as add-ons, some of those will not be refunded, and it depends on each itinerary.

No show and missed flights

Luckily if you do not show up or miss your flight on non-refundable or refundable tickets, you will automatically get the remaining credit of the flight you missed, minus a cancellation fee that is only for non-refundable tickets. (Basic economy tickets will not be refunded.)

For example, you missed the return flight of your non-refundable round-trip itinerary. The cost of the round-trip ticket was $1500, but you only missed the return. Therefore, you will get half of the total value of the ticket and minus the cancellation fee of $200. $1500 divided by two equals $750. Then minus the cancellation fee of $200. The credit you get to your Delta account will equal to $550 and can be used 1 year from the original travel date.

Delta Airlines same-day flight changes policy

Within 24 hours of the original departure of your flight, you are able to change your flight to an earlier flight on the same-day. Same-day changes are only available when flying within the US, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands.

Same-day flight changes are only available with non-refundable or refundable tickets in any cabin. Basic economy tickets cannot have same-day flight changes.

The fee is $75 for same-day confirmed and same-day standby changes to tickets. Same-day changes are subject to availability for seats in the same cabin. Doing same-day changes won’t always work.

For example, changing to earlier flights aren’t possible all the time as there might not be an earlier flight or no seats available. However, if there are multiple flights from the airport and you want to change to an earlier flight, the chances are better especially on less business traveled days.

I recommend checking how many seats are available on earlier flights.

The good thing about same-day changes is the fact that you will only be charged the fee if you get a seat. If there is no availability you won’t be charged for being on same-day standby.

How to get Delta fees waived

Update: Delta eliminated change fees for travel within the domestic U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands in Delta’s First Class, domestic Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin, with the exception of Basic Economy tickets.

Delta is one of the most lenient airlines to get fees waived no matter if you’re holding status or not.

If you have a specific reason to cancel the flight like you or an immediate family members death or sickness, Delta will waive the fees.

You might have to provide proof. If you don’t fall into either of those categories above, you can call Delta and request the fees to be waived. That will usually be up to the representative’s digression, but sometimes they waive the fees for being nice and having a good reason.

If you don’t fall into one of those reasons, Medallion members can get certain fees waived. Platinum and Diamond Medallions have award redeposit/reissue fees waived. Being able to not pay award tickets fees for cancellations or changes is a really nice benefit to be flexible. Gold, Platinum, and Diamond Medallion have same-day confirmed and standby fees waived.

Third-party ticket change or cancel

If you bought your flight through a vacation or hotel package and want to change/cancel the ticket. Then, additional fees may apply.

The third-party ticketer might charge an extra fee. If you change or cancel the ticket directly with Delta and not the third-party ticketer, you will be charged an extra $50 on top of the original change/cancellation fees.

Final word

With airlines raising and implementing new fees each year, these fees and policies for changing flights or canceling them will become stricter. While I don’t change flights much, it only takes one flight that you need to cancel and realize you still have to pay a giant fee on top of the ever so growing airline ticket prices.

15 Best Ways to Redeem Delta SkyMiles [2020]

Delta SkyMiles is an overlooked miles currency that people tend to give up on. You might be used to seeing Delta One (aka Delta’s name for business class) redemptions going for over 300,000 miles one-way. However, when focusing on Delta’s partners, you will see that Delta SkyMiles can take you further than you thought. Here’s a thorough review of the 15 best ways to redeem Delta SkyMiles.

Earning Delta SkyMiles

Delta SkyMiles are moderately easy to earn. There are 7 different Delta SkyMiles cobranded American Express credit cards available for you to grab.

  • Blue Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card
  • Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card
  • Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card
  • Delta Reserve® Credit Card
  • Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card
  • Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card
  • Delta Reserve® for Business Credit Card

Here is a quick look at two of my favorite Delta co-branded credit cards.

Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card

The Delta Gold card is a perfect way to quickly rack up a lot of SkyMiles while paying no annual fee the first year. The key with this card is to time your application so that you end up applying for the best welcome bonus that’s offered.

Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card

  • 2 miles per dollar on Delta purchases
  • First checked bag free
  • Annual fee $195
  • 1 time economy companion pass
  • Annual miles and MQMs after spend requirement

The Platinum Delta card (full review) also often comes with a great welcome bonus, but it’s even better for those who are trying to earn elite status with Delta since you’re able to earn MQMs along the way.

I really recommend reading up on our guide for applying for American Express cards.

Tip: Use WalletFlo for all your credit card needs. It’s free and will help you optimize your rewards and savings!

Amex Membership Rewards

You can also transfer your American Express Membership Reward points to Delta. However, Amex Membership Rewards does impose an excise tax offset fee of $0.0006 per point (with maximum fee of $99) for transferring your Membership Rewards points to Delta. I personally would only transfer to SkyMiles if I needed to top off for an award redemption. Otherwise, the excise tax adds up and devalues the points.

Delta SkyMiles Calculator and Award Chart

The first thing people need to know, Delta SkyMiles is a dynamic mile’s currency that has no award chart or calculator. This means, we don’t know what the redemption cost will be in the future, especially for Delta’s own flights.

Dynamic pricing works by changing the miles needed for a redemption based on the cash price. So, when the price goes up, Delta will slightly raise the miles for an award that was once less. This is also related to seasons. So, when redeeming one month a Delta One seat might go for 80,000 miles, but the next month it could be 86,000 miles for saver level redemptions.

Having no calculator or award chart makes it hard to know exactly how many miles one needs for certain redemptions. Luckily, for Delta’s partners it’s typically easier to know the lowest redemption price, since Delta’s partners will only show up when there is availability. Otherwise, Delta’s partners won’t show up if there is no availability.

Delta SkyMiles Value

Generally, you can expect an average 1.1 cents per point for economy class redemptions, but the value will go up much further when booking premium class tickets. Looking at the current price of a Virgin Australia ticket from SYD to LAX, you’d get about 6.3 cents per point in value after redeeming 100,000 miles.

At the standard economy valuation, if you were to collect 50,000 Delta SkyMiles you’d get about $550 in value and if you earned 100,000 Delta SkyMiles you’d get about $1100 in value. But using the premium Virgin Australia redemption above, 50,000 Delta SkyMiles would be worth about $3,150 and 100,000 Delta SkyMiles would be worth about $6,300.

Depending on how you use your miles, the Delta credit cards can be very valuable. However, take these numbers with a grain of salt. Your own valuation might be higher, but might be lower. This goes for any miles and points currency.

Award Regions Chart

Delta once had a regions chart, and we already know the outcome. It’s not published anymore. Therefore we base the regions off the old published regions award chart that is not available anymore. Luckily, the regions chart is still kinda holding true today.

Now, this regions chart isn’t the official one. I do wish Delta will publish a real regions chart so we know exactly every region, but if you have a correction to it please let me know so I can update it.

Routing Rules

Delta allows you to route through certain regions for no extra miles, like Australia to Europe you can route through North Asia or Southeast Asia. However, for Australia to Europe you cannot route through North America. Delta will always favor the shortest route with the least amount of connections.

Connections

Connections with Delta SkyMiles are also really interesting. They are based on that days availability and the least amount of connections available that day for that route. Delta will usually prioritize 1 connection routings over 2 connections. This makes the 2 connection routings need more more miles than 1 connection routings.

Basically, Delta adds extra miles on routings that have one more connection than what else is available for that day. However, if there are no routings that have 1 connection, than Delta will allow the 2 connection routings to be redeemed for the lowest amount of miles possible.

Open Jaws and Stopovers

Delta does allow open jaw since Delta will charge for each way on awards, similar to how United or American Airlines charge for each way. However, Delta doesn’t allow stopovers. If there is a connection, then the connection has to be less then 23 hours and 59 minutes.

SkyTeam Alliance and Delta Partners

Delta is part of the SkyTeam alliance, which means that you can use your Delta SkyMiles to fly any airline in the SkyTeam alliance.

The SkyTeam alliance has a huge presence in Asia, Europe, and the North America. Plus, Delta has a few non-alliance partners like Virgin Australia, Virgin Atlantic, Jet Airways, GOL, and WestJet. There is a full list of all Delta’s partners below.

Delta SkyMiles restrictions

Sadly, Delta doesn’t allow you to redeem for international first class like Korean Air first class, where it’s all about the dining experience.

While business class is fine, it’s nice to have the option to use your hard earned miles for first class on their partners. There are some cases that SkyMiles will allow you to book international first class, but it’s very rare and limited.

(Do note that if there isn’t any business class seats, you will be seated in first class. This is very common for regional products where some airlines don’t have business class on regional flights.)

Currently you cannot book Aeroflot using your SkyMiles. This isn’t a SkyMiles problem, but a problem with Aeroflot sharing their award inventory with their partners.

1. Delta SkyMiles Redemption Flash Sales (as low as 5,000 roundtrip)

Delta randomly runs flash sales for certain city pairs from 5,000 miles roundtrip. That is a crazy good redemption! That’s because the exact same domestic route on United Airlines would be 20,000 miles roundtrip or 25,000 miles roundtrip with American Airlines.

Flash sales usually start at 5,000 miles and go up from there. Sometimes, the flash sale might not have 5,000 miles redemptions. It is usually random for the redemption cost, so this isn’t the most guaranteed way to redeem your miles.

The city pairs are also random and might not be desirable. (Do you see a trend that SkyMiles loves to be random?) Luckily, their redemption sales happen multiple times a year with new city pairs for better odds. Sometimes they will have flash sales for international destinations in both economy and Delta One. (Sadly, the most recent sale doesn’t have any sales on Delta One.)

Typically, you can only take these flights on Delta metal (aka, their own planes and not their partners), so if you want to fly one of their partners, flash sales isn’t for you.

You can look at the ongoing deals right now here.

The current SkyMiles Award Sale. (ending October 19th)

2. Fly China Airlines Between Europe and Australia in Business Class for 90,000 Miles One-Way

With decent availability between Europe and Australia, you can easily redeem 90,000 miles for one-way in business class flying China Airlines. China Airlines flies their flagship A350 or 777 from Taiwan to London, Amsterdam, Rome, Vienna, Frankfurt, Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane making it easy to have a consistent experience.

My fiancé and I flew China Airlines from Rome to Melbourne via Taipei back in May on their A350. I will say this with certainty, China Airlines has a much-underrated business class product. We were amazed with the crew being very professional and attentive. The seat very stylish and comfy. Plus, it was a nice surprise to have a few flight attendants able to speak Japanese.

Of course, if you don’t want to fly China Airlines, you can redeem 90,000 miles for any of Delta’s partners.

(Tip: China Southern, China Eastern, Garuda Indonesia, and Xiamen Airlines flies mostly their sub-par hard products between Asia and Australia. Sometimes you can find their new hard products on the routes, but you have to check the equipment and configuration. Vietnam Airlines and Virgin Australia run their flagship products constantly on these routes.)

Availability between Rome and Melbourne.

3. Fly Between North America and North Asia in Business Class for 85,000 Miles One-Way on Partner Airlines

Want to fly on the upper deck of a Korean 747-8 in business class? Or do you prefer a 777, 787, A380, or A350? For 85,000 miles you can fly any of those on one of Delta’s partners in business class.

Korean Air 747-8 or 787 would be my go to airline since they use Apex Suites for their new business class hard product. Availability is typically great for Delta’s Asian partners since there is a handful to choose from, but typically China Southern, China Eastern, and China Airlines have the best availability.

Availability on Korean 747-8 is tough to find, but still possible.
Flights to China and onward on either China Southern (as shown in screenshot) or China Eastern have availability almost everyday.

4. Fly Between Europe and Asia in Business Class for 80,000 Miles One-Way

For only 80,000 miles, you can fly between Europe and North Asia and Southeast Asia in business class one-way.

Availability isn’t bad either from many cities. There is typically wide-open availability for these transcontinental routes between Europe and Asia.

My friend and I flew China Southern A380 from Beijing to Amsterdam in August and loved having half the cabin to ourselves. The flight attendants were great, funny, and definitely made the flight special. However, the catering was just okay. If you wanted a special flight, KLM flies their 747-400 combi to Asian cities like Hong Kong and they have business seats in the nose. 😉

Be aware, some of the routes will have sub-par leisure business class product to leisure destinations. I would highly recommend looking at the configuration of the aircraft for the best experience. Departing Asia will result in lower surcharges, while departing Europe will result in the usual high fuel surcharges.

KLM and China Southern availability for Beijing to Amsterdam is almost available everyday.
China Southern A380 Business Class. (PEK-AMS)

5. Fly between Seoul and Guam in “Business Class” for 30,000 Miles One-Way

Why does business class have quotation marks around them? Well it’s because on this particular flight between Seoul and Guam it’s bookable for Korean 777-300er first class. SkyMiles sometimes will have loopholes, if you must call it that, where you can book international first class even though you’re booking business class.

For example: You were once able to book China Airlines 747 first class with SkyMiles, but not anymore since they have corrected the loophole. 🙁

So, if you’re in Seoul or a short hop away, it might be worth it to visit Guam to fly Korean first class. 😉

Availability is almost daily. (36,000 Won ~ $32 USD)
Unfortunately everyday I have checked only has 1 seat available.

6. Fly between North Asia and Southeast Asia in Business Class for 40,000 Miles One-Way

Want to fly between Tokyo and Jakarta (NRT-CGK) or Beijing and Bali? 40,000 miles in Garuda Indonesia 777 business class for 7 hours in the sky isn’t bad.

Availability is easy to find from many cities. Vietnam Airlines typically flies their A350 or 787 for many of their intra-asia routes. Sometimes, Korean flies their 747-8 on some routes, but changes frequently. Some of China Easterns A330s will have 1-2-1 configuration using Zodia Cirrus seats.

Just be aware that some routes might have a regional product instead of a lie-flat seat. Therefore, if you want the most value, routes that are on the airline’s flagship aircrafts will usually allow you to have the best experience.

7. Fly Between North America and Europe in Business Class for 75,000 Miles One-Way on Partner Airlines

If Asia isn’t your thing, you can fly Air France, KLM, Alitalia, or Virgin Atlantic in business class between America and Europe. Just be aware the flights leaving Europe will have high fuel surcharges (over $250) and flights leaving America will have low fuel surcharges ($5.60).

If you’re flying Air France, both their 777 and 787 has their best business class product, while their A380 has their dated subpar product. KLM 787 has their wonderful new business class product. Alitalia is decent, but because of recent money troubles I suggest you skip Alitalia. For Virgin Atlantic on any aircraft the bar is fun with a wonderful soft product, but their business class hard product is cramped.

8. Fly Between North America and Middle East in Business Class for 85,000 Miles One-Way

I think the Middle East should be on everyone’s bucket list. It’s one of my favorite places for food and certainly the only reason to travel is to eat, right?

Go to the Middle East for only 85,000 miles with Delta partners only. Most availability is with Saudia, but it could be any other one of Delta’s partners like Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, etc.

Or for 86,000 miles you could fly Delta halfway there. Most of the time you will connect through Paris or Amsterdam, but try to position yourself at DTW so you could take the new Delta One Suites to Amsterdam and then connect onward to the Middle East with KLM. It’s worth it I think to try the new Delta One Suite, I certainly loved it. I was more surprised by the huge footwell compared to reverse herringbone seats.

You could fly KLM to Muscat with a stop in Dammam and it’s one of the few routes that KLM Delft Blue houses aren’t filled with alcohol because of Saudi Arabian laws. (Makes for a great souvenir.) There is tons of availability on the AMS-DMM-MCT route and offers cheap business class fares from Muscat to America.

Availability throughout America to the Middle East is easy to come by.
For only 1,000 miles more you could fly in the new Delta One Suite with a door.

9. Fly Between Asia and Africa in Business Class for 80,000 Miles One-Way

For 80,000 miles you can fly between Asia and Africa. Experience the beautiful continent.

Availability is good between the two regions. Most of the time the flights will route through Europe on KLM or Air France, but other partners that offer limited routes and availability to Africa would be Saudia and China Southern. You could time your connection to be long for a nice short visit in Paris or Amsterdam.

However, Kenya Airways is tough to book on Delta’s website. So, if you wanted to Fly Guangzhou to Johannesburg while connecting in Nairobi to fly Kenya Airways the rest of the way. You will have to call up Delta. Delta’s representatives tend have a hard to booking Kenya Airways, so you might have to try a few times. Delta and Kenya Airways did start a codeshare agreement recently, but virtually no of flights are redeemable online.

10. Fly Between Europe and South America in Business Class for 90,000 Miles One-Way

With wide open availability between Europe and South America, you can enjoy flying most days between the two continents. And when I say wide open, I mean wide open most dates. From my findings, Argentina has the most availability.

The primary airlines flying between the two continents would be Air France and KLM. While Alitalia and Aerolineas Argentinas have very limited availability, but you aren’t missing much not flying those two airlines.

If you want lower fuel surcharges, depart from South America instead of Europe.

11. Fly Kenya Airways Between New York and Nairobi for 95,000 Miles One-Way

Why is this one of the best ways to redeem SkyMiles? Because it’s Kenya Airways and it’s their first route to North America! While their business class product is subpar with a 2-2-2 layout, the soft product is wonderful. Plus, it’s a brand-new route on their beautiful 787. Maybe it’s just me, but I cannot wait to fly on this on this route.

Do take note that this route has high fuel surcharges (around $400). You can only book this route by phone (check availability on ExpertFlyer). Plus, it’s difficult to book this route since Delta’s systems aren’t easy for booking Kenya Airways. If one rep gives up, call back and try to get a rep that will power through it. However, none of that will stop me from flying their first ever transatlantic route.

If you want to visit other destinations or fly other partner airlines, it will still be 95,000 miles.

12. Fly Between Australia and North and Southeast Asia in Business Class for 65,000 Miles One-Way

Fly any of Delta’s partners between Australia/New Zealand and North/Southeast Asia for 65,000 miles in business class.

There is tons of availability between the two regions flying Delta’s partners, especially Vietnam Airlines having the most availability. You could even fly Virgin Australia A330 to Hong Kong from either Sydney or Melbourne. Plus, Virgin Australia’s business class between Australia and Asia can be redeemed anytime, unlike flights going to America on Virgin Australia, which have the 14 days limit.

13. Fly Virgin Australia Between America and Australia in Business Class for 100,000 Miles One-Way

Lastly, flying Virgin Australia between America and Australia for 100,000 miles one-way in business class is a treat.

Virgin Australia is a wonderful experience and well worth it. In fact, Daniel had tons of fun flying business class on Virgin Australia 777 that sometimes had a first class feel to it. From the bar to the service and seat, it should be on everyone’s bucket list to fly Virgin Australia 777.

However, there is one issue about booking Virgin Australia business class on routes between Australia and the USA. You must redeem miles for Virgin Australia business class less then 14 days in advance of the departure date. So, if you search and try to redeem your miles on the 10th of October, you can only book between the 10th and 24th of October. It’s great for last minute awards, but not great if you’re planning a family vacation.

14. Fly Between Indian Subcontinent and Africa in Business Class for 70,000 Miles One-Way

Want to go from India to Africa? You can fly from Delhi to Johannesburg for 70,000 miles in business class. Most flights will once again route through Europe, lots of them are with KLM, Air France, and sometimes Saudia.

I would only suggest not flying Jet Airways, their business class is not only cramped and subpar, but it’s also really dirty in the galleys where they prepare the food and usually different parts of the seats will be broken.

Availability is good in business, plus fuel surcharges are relatively low for this redemption.

Availability is not an issue flying KLM between Delhi and Johannesburg.

15. Fly Between Middle East and Europe in Business Class for 42,500 Miles One-Way

Side trip from the Middle East to Europe? For 42,500 miles you can fly business class to visit the tallest building in the world.

Availability is good between these two regions, almost everyday for airlines like KLM, Saudia, and Air France.

Fuel surcharges leaving from countries within the Middle East will be low, but fuel surcharges leaving Europe will be much higher.

Dubai to Paris has almost everyday availability. (120 UAE Dirham ~ $33 USD)
Paris to Dubai has lots of availability, but has high fuel surcharges because of leaving Europe.

Other uses for Delta SkyMiles

Miles + Cash Redemptions

Miles + Cash redemptions are a way to add a cash surcharge to your award ticket to reduce the amount of miles needed for a redemption. Miles + Cash still issues an award ticket that doesn’t earn any MQMs, MQSs, and MQDs.

Usually using the Miles + Cash option is great if you don’t have enough miles. However, you’re effectively paying for miles by adding a surcharge. I suggest doing the math to see if you come out ahead for particular bookings.

Pay with Miles

Paying with miles is unlocked when you hold one of the Delta credit cards. Paying with miles will allow you to redeem 1 mile for $0.01 off the ticket. 5,000 miles would equal to $50 off the cash price. $100 for 10,000 miles, $150 for 15,000 miles, etc. This won’t allow you to get much value out of your miles, but it does allow you to earn MQMs and miles.

Delta Vacations

You can redeem your miles for the whole vacation like hotels, flights, rental cars, and activities. Plus, it will cover the costs of others, as long as they are on the same reservation. Using your miles for Delta Vacations isn’t going to get great value out of your miles since 1 mile is worth 1 cent. You do earn miles and MQMs when redeeming miles on vacations.

Delta Experiences

Bid your miles for experience like backstage at a concert, special seats at sporting events, once in a lifetime activity, etc. Anything is possible with Delta Experiences and it’s done auction style. Sometimes you can get great value or bid so much that you lost the concept of valuing your miles. Otherwise, this is one way to burn your SkyMiles for once in a lifetime experiences.

Final word

While Daniel has his views about Delta SkyMiles, I for one think SkyMiles are useful for a backup miles currency. Especially when it’s the same redemption cost as American Airlines or United Airlines miles. When there is availability, Delta SkyMiles goes a long way. Most of the best redemptions are for their partners, and that isn’t a bad thing, but Delta SkyMiles is just another tool to achieve business class award flights. I just hope Delta adds functionality to book SkyTeam first class inventory and maybe, just maybe, add an award chart.
