Breckenridge might be known for its world-class skiing, but there’s a whole other side to this historic mountain town that’s worth exploring—especially in the warmer months. From quirky art to gold rush history, here are five offbeat and unforgettable experiences to enjoy in Breckenridge during the summer.
1. Mix Your Own Wine at Continental Divide Winery
Ever wanted to play winemaker for a day? At Continental Divide Winery, you can do just that. This high-altitude winery (the world’s highest, in fact) offers a unique wine-blending experience where you taste, mix, and bottle your own custom blend.
Whether you’re a seasoned sommelier or just curious about the process, it’s a fun and interactive way to connect with Colorado’s growing wine scene—and you get to take home a bottle with a personalized label.

2. Say Hello to the Breckenridge Troll
Just a short walk from downtown, you’ll find one of Breckenridge’s most beloved (and tallest) residents: Isak Heartstone, a 15-foot wooden troll nestled in the forest along the Trollstigen Trail. Created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo using recycled wood, this whimsical sculpture blends art, nature, and storytelling into one unforgettable photo op.
Isak was the first Dambo troll we ever saw—and he sparked a journey that led us to discover more of these magical giants across the country, including one in Maine. The trail is easy and family-friendly, but keep in mind that parking nearby can be pricey or limited. If you’re staying in town, it’s best to walk or hop on Breckenridge’s free public transportation.

3. Go Underground at Country Boy Mine
Step back in time to Breckenridge’s gold rush era with a tour of the Country Boy Mine. This authentic 1880s gold mine lets you explore original tunnels, learn how miners lived and worked, and even try your hand at gold panning. It’s one of the oldest and most complete mining sites in Colorado—and a great family activity that’s both fun and educational.

The tour guides are engaging and knowledgeable, bringing the mine’s history to life in a way that’s accessible for all ages. Just be prepared: it’s chilly underground (around 45°F year-round), so wear a layer. The tunnels can also be a bit damp, and you might feel a few drops from the ceiling—but it all adds to the experience.
Don’t leave without taking a turn on the mine’s famous slide—it’s a quick thrill and offers a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.

4. Explore a Historic Dredge Boat Site
While strolling along the Blue River or hiking local trails near Breckenridge, you may come across the haunting remains of a massive dredge boat—part of the town’s gold mining past. These enormous floating machines chewed through riverbeds in search of gold, leaving behind telltale piles of river rock (called dredge tailings) that stretch for miles. If you notice long, snaking mounds of rocks across the landscape, you’re likely walking through what was once a dredge path.

The particular dredge boat still visible today was one of the most lucrative in the area, extracting significant wealth before operations ceased. It’s an easy, short hike—something you can do in under 20 minutes—to see this fascinating and eerie piece of industrial history. Interpretive signs along the way help explain how the dredging worked and its lasting impact on the local environment.

5. Ride the Free Gondola for Wildlife Views and Mountain Vibes
Hop on the Breckenridge Free Gondola, which runs from town up to the ski base area at Peak 8—and enjoy the scenic ride over Cucumber Gulch Wildlife Preserve. This protected area is home to beavers, moose, deer, and a variety of birds. In summer, it’s not uncommon to spot wildlife from your gondola window as you glide over wetlands and forest. Bonus: the gondola ride is free and runs most of the year.

Breckenridge Beyond the Slopes
Whether you’re into art, wine, history, or hiking, Breckenridge has plenty to offer beyond the typical resort experience. These five activities will help you see a different side of the Rockies—one filled with creativity, heritage, and wild beauty.
