It’s been over two weeks since serious negotiations took place between Democratic and Republican leaders regarding the next round of stimulus funding.
After negotiations broke down around August 7th, President Trump signed an executive order and memorandums that covered a variety of stimulus issues like enhanced unemployment benefits and student loan deferments but due to a lack of constitutional power he was not able to sign more stimulus checks into law.
Since then, there has been a lull in talks and negotiations, with some speculating that another agreement won’t happen until after Labor Day at the earliest. Some have even cast doubt on a new stimulus package passing altogether.
But it looks like there are new glimmers of hope.
According to Fortune, on Wednesday, “White House chief of staff Mark Meadows told Politico his staff reached out to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday to restart negations on a broad stimulus bill.”
“We haven’t heard anything from her, and I don’t anticipate we’ll actually get a phone call,” Meadows told Politico.
Meadows does not believe that Pelosi will restart talks until later on in September whenever the next spending bill comes around.
This is somewhat of a reversal from were things were back in June.
Earlier in the summer, Nancy Pelosi accused Republicans of dragging their feet and not acting swiftly enough to pass the stimulus package. But now, it’s starting to look like the roles are reversed as Pelosi is reportedly not taking the opportunity to negotiate with officials at the White House in a prompt manner.
It really has been a perplexing and frustrating showing from people on both sides of the aisle.
The need for an additional stimulus bill is starting to become pretty clear and many are hoping that those realities will provide an incentive for lawmakers to get into action.
Economists are now worried that the economy might go into contraction if additional aid is not given as soon as next month. And with talks about entities like American Airlines furloughing 19,000 workers (about 1,600 pilots and 8,100 flight attendants) in the event no more stimulus aid is given, these realities are starting to sink in.
Hopefully, lawmakers will start to sense the impending pressure on the economy and will seek to relieve a lot of that with an additional stimulus package that will be sent out ASAP.
