Stimulus check update: Where things stand

Back on May 15, the House passed the Heroes Act which was the Democratic stimulus proposal that totaled approximately $3.4 trillion.

This bill contained numerous provisions and Republicans saw it as a mere “wish list,” with some calling it “dead on arrival.”

Senate Republicans then introduced their stimulus package on July 27 known as the Heals Act which had a price tag of about $1 trillion.

Democrats and Republicans, along with the White House, attempted to find a middle ground between these stimulus packages over the next couple of months.

During that process some key features of the next stimulus package were agree to such as additional $1,200 stimulus checks.

However, other provisions related to things like unemployment benefits, aid for local governments, student loans, and other issues such as the overall price tag were never agreed to.

President Trump attempted to resolve some of these issues by signing executive orders and memorandums which went out for things like extended unemployment benefits and student loan relief.

Yet, Democrats and Republicans still have not been able to make progress on the next stimulus package and it appears that progress may not happen next month.

Politico reported:

White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said Wednesday he is not optimistic about reaching a new coronavirus relief deal before the end of September, predicting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will use the government funding cliff at the end of next month as leverage to strike a deal on pandemic aid …

The White House chief of staff said lawmakers from both parties have privately expressed to him a desire to make progress on coronavirus relief. The holdup, Meadows said he suspects, is that Pelosi is holding back her party’s rank and file in order to secure more Democratic priorities in any legislation.

I have suspected for a while now that the funding for the government will become intertwined with the next stimulus package.

This means that we might start to hear threats about a government shut down sometime soon which is the very last thing that this country needs, especially because some institutions such as the NIH are playing a major role in dealing with the pandemic.

And even if there is no government shut down, some are speculating that stimulus talks will be put off until after the elections at the beginning of November.

If that’s the case, stimulus checks won’t be going out anytime soon and people could not expect to see them until perhaps sometime just before Thanksgiving.

So at this point, I would not necessarily count on receiving additional checks. It’s still is a possibility but if it does happen, a likely scenario seems to be that it won’t happen until a couple of months in the future.
