The American Express Gold Card is the card that I rack up the most points with. It is definitely one of the best cards to keep for the long-haul but right now there is even more reason to pick it up because of the great welcome bonus that the card comes with.
Below, I will break down the offer and also give you a sneak peek at the new ranking system WalletFlo will use to help you instantly evaluate credit card offers!
The new offer
Offer no longer available
- 60,000 Membership Rewards after you spend $4,000 in the first six months
This is a fantastic bonus.
Using a WalletFlo valuation of 1.75, 60,000 Membership Rewards comes out to $1,050. That is an extremely competitive offer for a travel rewards credit card.
The standard Gold Card offer available to the public is for 35,000 Membership Rewards after you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months.
So this new offer is a huge increase and the best public offer that we have seen. It’s not every day that you see a welcome bonus nearly double unexpectedly.
By the way, when the new version of WalletFlo launches (new mobile app) we will use an emoji system to indicate whether or not an offer is one of the all-time high public offers. This will allow you to quickly evaluate whether or not you should apply for an offer based on its bonus.
In this case, this new Gold Card offer would probably get the highest rating (unicorn) because of how drastic the increase is from the standard bonus (almost double) and because of the extended period for the minimum spend.
We are still figuring out exactly how to best describe the different credit card offer levels but here is a preliminary look at the rating system that will be used:
With the new notification system, you can set to be notified for only the best new offers (fire and above).
If you have any thoughts on the ranking system, let me know and we can consider those!
As mentioned, the minimum spend period has been pushed out to six months. With many people spending less due to pandemic conditions, this will give you more time to obtain that minimum spend requirement.
The Gold Card also has some fantastic bonus categories allowing you to earn 4X on dining, 4X on US supermarkets on up to $25,000 worth of spend, and 3X on airfare.
Tip: Use WalletFlo to help you optimize your credit cards. It’s free and will help you get approved for some of the best travel cards!
The annual fee is $250 but you get a monthly dining credit of $10 that helps to knock that annual fee down to an effective $130. And in addition to that you also have a $100 airline credit which can further reduce the fee down to $30.
If you are putting even a moderate amount of spend on dining and groceries with this card, you easily come out on top which is one of the reasons why I am such a huge fan of it.
Because the Gold Card is a charge card and not a credit card, it is not subject to all of the American Express application rules like the 1/5 rule, the 2/90 rule, and the four or five card limit.
However, this card is still subject to the Amex once per lifetime rule which states that if you have ever had this card before you cannot receive the welcome bonus again.
It is also worth noting that if you had the Premier Rewards Gold Card in the past, the welcome bonus for this card will not be available to you.
If you want to automate the calculations for all of these credit card rules, you should check out WalletFlo which will help you optimize your cards and automate all of these things.
Overall, this is a great offer and would be worthy of the highest rating for WalletFlo. And if you spend a lot on dining and groceries, you will probably find that this card is easily worth holding onto in the long term.
