Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge Access Policy Explained [2022]

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is one of the hottest premium credit cards with a number of solid perks, including Priority Pass airport lounge access. I’ve used its Priority Pass membership a countless number of times and it is still one of the few cards that I always keep in my wallet.

But what exactly can you expect with Chase Sapphire Reserve lounge access and what access do guests get?

This article will explain everything you need to know about the Sapphire Reserve’s lounge access policy for cardmembers and guests. I’ll also show you how to find a list of Priority Pass lounges in the US and around the globe and offer up some alternative options for lounge access.

What is the Chase Sapphire Reserve airport lounge access policy?

The Chase Sapphire Reserve offers Priority Pass Select airport lounge access for you and up to two guests.

Priority Pass offers different types of memberships but the type of membership given to Chase Sapphire Reserve holders is Priority Pass Select, which is essentially the equivalent of “Prestige” which would normally cost you $400 and wouldn’t even allow free guests. So this is an extremely valuable perk just in terms of its monetary value.

Considering that the annual fee for the Reserve is $550, and that you can use the $300 travel credit and $60 DoorDash credit to offset that annual fee down to $190, it is like getting a $400 membership for well under $200 (assuming you take advantage of other perks of the credit card).

What are Priority Pass lounges?

Priority Pass is a global network of airport lounges that number over 1,300. You can search for a list of Priority Pass lounges in various cities here.

Priority Pass lounges vary in quality and services offered.

Some Priority Pass lounges might offer clean showers, hot food items, complimentary alcohol, modern decor, spacious multi-floor seating, and inspiring views of the tarmac. At these lounges you will be loving life and at peace with the universe (even with flight delays).

Other Priority Pass lounges may consist of merely a large, dim room with canned sodas, chips, and some painfully slow internet. At these lounges you will not be living life and not be at peace with the universe (and yes, flight delays will have you questioning your life choices).

Still, even though the quality differs among Priority Pass lounges, I’ve been overall pleased with my Chase Sapphire Reserve lounge access, especially while traveling abroad. I’ve visited some very nice lounges that have offered me some crucial rest when I needed it the most. The key is to always do research so that you know if you will have a lounge at the airport you are traveling through.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Priority Pass guest policy

The Chase Sapphire Reserve was unique when it was released in that it offered Priority Pass access to the cardholder and to every guest traveling on the same itinerary.

Yes, you could walk into a lounge with 10 other people and everybody could get in as long as you were all on the same travel itinerary. So as you can probably imagine people abused this benefit to death. Literally.

Chase ended up revising their policy so that card holders were limited to only two guests per visit, which is the current policy.

It’s worth noting that most lounges have their own policy when it comes to allowing folks in. Typically, they will follow the guest policy attached to your membership but at times, “due to capacity,” they could limit the entrance of guests.

Heck, they could even turn you, the cardmember, around and not allow you to enter the lounge if they are too full. Some lounges will have dedicated hours when Priority Pass members are not given access so watch out for those, too.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Priority Pass restaurant access

There are quite a few restaurants that are part of the Priority Pass lounge network. At these restaurants, you can get a credit of around $30 that you can use toward food or beverages which is quite nice.

Some cards with Priority Pass do not allow you to receive these credits for these restaurants but with the Chase Sapphire Reserve you definitely get these credits.

How it works is that you scan your Priority Pass card or app and then scan your boarding pass at the beginning of your meal. Sometimes the server will ask you if you are a Priority Pass member but other times you can just call it to their attention.

They should clarify the amount of your dining credit and then you simply can order whatever you want and apply that credit to food or drinks. The only thing you can’t apply the credit to is tips.

Hitting up these restaurants is great at airports that don’t have lounges or even at airports that do have lounges but are overran with other guests.

Accessing arrival lounges or lounges upon arrival

Some Priority Pass lounges will allow you to access the lounge when you arrive at the airport so you don’t always have to be departing.

For example, let’s say that you fly from Seattle to Los Angeles. When you arrive in Los Angeles, it is possible that you could get access to a Priority Pass lounge. Lounges may not always allow folks to enter when they are arriving so you can’t always count on this.

Then there are also arrival lounges — these are lounges that are dedicated to passengers arriving at the airport and of course you will be allowed in if that lounge is a part of the Priority Pass network.

Do authorized users get Priority Pass?

Each authorized user will get their own Priority Pass so they can get access into airport lounges along with two additional guests. The annual fee for each authorized user is $75 so you could consider this a heavily discounted Priority Pass membership.

This is the most valuable benefit for Chase Sapphire Reserve authorized users, though there are some other perks as well.

How to sign-up for Priority Pass

You cannot forget to activate your Priority Pass membership after you get approved for the Sapphire Reserve because it does not automatically get activated. If you forget to activate, not only will you not have a lounge membership but you will officially be a Reserve newb.

Once you have your Sapphire Reserve online account setup, log-in and go to Ultimate Rewards.

Form there, click on “Card Benefits” and then the “Activate Now” button. That will activate the benefit for you and any authorized users you have added to your account.

Your membership will remain active until you close the card.

If you add your authorized user after activating the card for yourself, just call in to Chase and let them know what you’re trying to do.

Remember to bring your Priority Pass Card!

Merely holding the Sapphire Reserve credit card in your possession will not be enough to get you access into the lounge. For this reason, I always advise people to bring along their physical Priority Pass card which gets mailed out to you.

And although it’s possible to gain access with the app (“the digital membership card”), not all lounges will take the digital card. And there is always the chance that their computers are not working properly or something along those lines.

Here is what Priority Pass states about bringing your card:

All lounges accept the physical membership card and the majority of our 1300+ lounges also accept the Digital Membership Card. To avoid any disappointment, we recommend you always carry both cards with you when traveling.

So I always try to keep my physical card on me when traveling. It’s just good practice.

What if I forget my card?

If for some reason you forget to carry your Priority Pass card with you, you can charge the lounge access on your Sapphire Reserve and Chase might reimburse you for the expense. Keyword “might.”

I’ve been told they will do this, but I would not 100% rely on this (especially more than once) because this sounds like something where your mileage could vary.

If you do end up doing this, simply call the number on the back of your card or send them a secure message explaining to them how you misplaced or forgot your card and how you would like to request a reimbursement for the lounge entrance fee. And then cross your fingers.

Other lounge memberships

It’s worth noting that only approximately 5% of Priority Pass lounges are located inside the US. Yes, you heard that right only 5%.

And while there are more Priority Pass lounges popping up all the time, many feel that the domestic lounges are much too crowded.

Therefore, if you want to maximize domestic airport lounge access with credit cards, you might want to consider some other options. Below are a couple of options that will have you relaxing stress-free in some great lounges all around the US.

American Express Centurion Lounges

My favorite lounges to visit when traveling in the United States are the American Express Centurion Lounges. These are definitely some of the nicer domestic lounges and you can typically find the following features:

  • Hot food items
  • Complementary quality cocktails
  • Showers
  • Quality service
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Swanky decor
  • Some even have spas

You can only get access to these lounges if you have a qualifying card.

Qualifying cards include the American Express Platinum Card, the Business Platinum Card, and the Centurion Card, also known as the American Express Black Card.

The Platinum Card comes with a Priority Pass membership but it does not offer you access to Priority Pass restaurants in airports which is a bit of a bummer (you get a host of other lounge memberships though).

The annual fee for the Platinum Card is $695 which is expensive but you can offset this annual fee with several credits like the $200 airline credit, $200 Uber credit, and $100 Saks credit. Also, the Platinum Card is simply loaded with additional benefits and you can read more about those here.

Co-branded credit cards

Maybe you are more of the loyal type and interested in getting airport lounge access with just one airline. For example, maybe you live next to a United hub and frequently pass through that airport. In that case, maybe you would be interested in getting a United Club membership?

Well, you are in luck because you can use cards like the United Club Card to get an annual membership into United Club lounges.

Other airlines like Delta and American Airlines also have credit cards that will offer you lounge access.

Do Chase Sapphire Credit Cards Cover Turo Car Rentals? [2022]

Turo is turning out to be one of the most convenient and (sometimes) cost efficient ways to go about renting a car when traveling.

For those of us who often rely on rental coverage from a Chase Sapphire credit card, a big question looms of whether or not you can get coverage with a Turo rental.

In this article, I’ll take a look at whether or not you can get rental car coverage with a Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve. I’ll also present you with some alternative options including pricing options that you might have to go with when booking with Turo.

Do Chase Sapphire Credit Cards cover Turo rentals?

No, you most likely will NOT get rental car coverage with Chase Sapphire credit cards because Turo is not considered (by Chase) to be a rental agency and instead is viewed as a peer to peer car service.

Tip: Use the free app WalletFlo to help you travel the world for free by finding the best travel credit cards and promotions!

Chase Sapphire Preferred

First, let’s take a look at the Chase Sapphire Preferred benefits.

The Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver benefit provides reimbursement for damages caused by theft or collision up to the Actual Cash Value of most rented cars.

It’s one of the most significant credit card benefits because it offers primary coverage which can allow you to bypass involving your car insurance and save you money when renting cars.

The Sapphire Preferred has quite a few exclusions where you can’t get coverage. It includes instances like damage caused by going off road and renting high-end luxury vehicles (Bentley, Corvette, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lamborghini, etc.).

(Some people use Turo to rent these fancy cars so it’s something to be aware of.)

But one of the exclusions explicitly mentioned is “Vehicles that are not rented from a Rental Agency.”

The terms go on to define a rental agency as:

a commercial rental company licensed under the laws of the applicable jurisdiction and whose primary business is renting automobiles.

Turo is usually/always not considered a rental agency so this means that your coverage would not apply when using the Chase Sapphire Preferred to book with Turo. (This was also confirmed by a representative that I later spoke with.) So things are pretty clear cut with the Chase Sapphire Preferred but what about the Reserve?

Chase Sapphire Reserve

Now, let’s take a look at the Chase Sapphire Reserve benefits.

A lot of people don’t know this but the terms for primary rental car coverage for the Chase Sapphire Reserve are a little bit different from the Sapphire Preferred. And this makes sense because it’s a more premium card.

Unlike the Sapphire Preferred which refers to the actual cash value of vehicles and excludes high-end vehicles, the Reserve states that it will reimburse you for up to $75,000 for most vehicles but does have exclusions for vehicles like:

  • antique automobiles; cargo vans; vehicles that have an open cargo bed; trucks; motorcycles, mopeds, and motorbikes; limousines; and recreational vehicles.

Although the terms did not always have this language, they now show exclusions for “Vehicles that are not rented from a Rental Agency.”

The terms also exclude “Leases and mini leases” and so it makes me wonder if a Turo agreement could be considered a “mini lease” although that does not seem likely.

And just to make sure, I called the benefit services administrator to get clarification and they made it very clear to me that Turo rentals would not be covered by the Chase Sapphire Reserve or Preferred.

They stated that in order to get coverage you would have to rent from a commercially licensed rental car agency. They also mentioned that any peer-to-peer rentals (which is exactly what Turo reportedly is) would not allow for coverage.

While all of that makes sense, I find it really curious that the Sapphire Reserve terms do not make more of an effort to specifically talk about peer to peer rentals but oh well.

It’s worth noting that some courts have found that Turo is a rental car company:

In finding that Turo is a rental car company, the court noted the similarities with Turo’s model compared to incumbent car rental companies: Turo’s internet-based platform allows customers to rent specific passenger vehicles; Turo receives a percentage of the proceeds from each rental transaction; Turo sells insurance

Such findings could have consequences for rental car coverage in the future but for now it doesn’t seem to be enough to get you coverage with your Sapphire cards.

Alternatives

Just because you can’t get coverage with a Chase card, that does not mean that you cannot get coverage for your Turo rental.

First, you should consider contacting your car insurance provider and inquire with him about your policy and how it applies to peer to peer rentals.

In our case, we had USAA and they verified with us that we would have coverage in the event of some sort of incident.

You can also look into buying coverage via Turo which can increase your rental cost anywhere from $20+ a day to $70.

They offer three different plans (Minimum, Standard or Premier) and you can see the pricing details below. (note that these are subject to change).

You can also choose to decline the insurance all together.

Premier plan

  • Cost is 65% to 100% of the trip price; minimum charge of $14/day.

Standard plan

  • Cost is 40% of the trip price; minimum charge of $12/day.

Minimum plan

  • Cost is 18% of the trip price when the trip price is more than $250; minimum charge of $10/day.
  • Cost is 25% of the trip price when the trip price is less than $250; minimum charge of $10/day.

Final word

While the Sapphire Reserve and the Sapphire Preferred provide great rental car coverage; unfortunately, you cannot get coverage for a rental with Turo.

That is because Turo would not be considered a commercially licensed rental car agency and instead it would be classified under a peer to peer car service.

It’s possible that something might change down the line but for now you’ll need to consider the alternative options for coverage.

Chase Reconsideration Line: Tips If Denied (Phone Number) [2022]

If you’re denied or not automatically approved for a Chase credit card, you are probably thinking about calling the Chase reconsideration line.

But before you ever give them a call, read this article!

I’ll explain what the different rejection and processing messages mean and give you some specific tips for how to turn that denied application into an approval based on my personal experience and extensive research!

What is the Chase reconsideration line?

The Chase reconsideration line is a special phone line you call that offers you a chance to persuade a Chase representative to overturn a rejection or denied credit card application. The phone number is 1 (800) 453-9719 and the hours of operation are usually:

  • 7am to 10pm EST Monday through Friday
  • 8am to 1pm EST Saturday
  • 9am to 9pm EST on Sunday

You should call this line for all personal credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Freedom, Chase Southwest Premier Card, etc.

But if you’re calling reconsideration for a business credit card like the Chase Ink Preferred or Chase Ink Unlimited then you’ll want to call in to the business reconsideration line.

The Chase business reconsideration line phone number is 1-800-453-9719 and it is usually open 1pm to 10pm Monday through Friday.

See my special tips for business calls further below.

Do I always need to call reconsideration?

You don’t always need to call reconsideration. Depending on the message that you receive after submitting your application, you may or may not need to call reconsideration.

I’ll walk you through some of the messages that you might receive whenever your credit card application is not automatically approved and give you some guidance on what route you should take based on the message you receive.

Tip: Use WalletFlo for all your credit card needs. It’s free and will help you optimize your rewards and savings!

Chase application messages

Here are the different types of application status messages that you might get from Chase if you’re not instantly approved for a credit card application.

We’ll notify you “within the next 30 days” message

If your Chase credit card application is not auto approved, you will almost certainly get a message via email stating that you will be notified “within the next 30 days” about the decision of your application. It should look something like this.

The Chase 30 day message — not necessarily a bad thing.

This message just means that your credit card application is being processed — it does not mean you will be rejected or even that you have to call in to reconsideration. Basically, your credit card application is still in limbo.

Chase automated status line

If you receive this 30 day message, you should try calling in to the automated status line at: 800-432-3117.

Note that some times when you call to check on your status they might transfer you to a live human being who will review your application. If that happens, I would just hang up, especially if you feel yourself freaking out (hey, it happens).

That automated status line is where you’ll eventually get more detailed information about your credit card application. Your status could be updated in a matter of hours or it could take a couple of weeks, so try not to drive yourself insane with checking it every minute of every hour.

There are a few different messages you might receive regarding your application status and they can signal that very different outcomes are on their way.

Another 30 day message

If you call in to the automatic status checker and hear that you’ll be notified within 30 days, that just means that your application is still in limbo. I would recommend you keep checking every day or every other day. At this point, you still don’t have to call Chase reconsideration.

Two week message

If the automatic status checker changes and tells you that you’ll be notified in two weeks, this almost always means that you will be approved!

Chase reconsideration line tips
Getting the two week message usually leads to this!

7 to 10 day message

If the automatic status checker changes and tells you that you’ll be notified in 7 to 10 days, this almost always means that you will be denied. At this point, you may want to go ahead and call into Chase reconsideration line at: 1 (800) 453-9719.

You don’t have to call recon at that point, though. Some people still get approved even after receiving the 7 to 10 day message (usually by verifying their ID), so you could wait until you’re officially denied before calling in.

Calling into the Chase reconsideration line

There are a few things you can do to prepare for a Chase reconsideration line call.

If you’re just applying for a personal credit card, this will be easier than if you were calling about a business credit card, but you should still be prepared.

Lowering credit limits (before applying)

This is something you might do before you even apply for a Chase credit card in order to avoid reconsideration. It’s generally recommended for people who have a lot of inquiries because those people will probably not be auto-approved.

What you do is lower your credit limit on a given Chase credit card or even on multiple Chase cards so that you free up some credit line for a new card. This will typically be around $5,000 to $10,000 but could vary depending on your credit limits.

Freeing up credit lines might increase the odds that Chase will auto-approve you since they already approved you in the past for that same amount of credit. This doesn’t always work so you need to consider how lowering your credit lines will affect your utilization.

Check on the Chase credit card application rules

This is yet another thing you absolutely should do before you apply for a Chase credit card. You need to know about all of the different Chase credit card application rules like 5/24, 2/30, 24 month rule, etc. But even if you’ve already applied, it’s a good idea to review them to see where you may have gone wrong. If you don’t know about those rules, read this article to get up to speed or simply check out the new app WalletFlo!

If you discover that you were violating any of those rules like the 2/30 rule, it’s best to wait until you’re no longer violating them to call back in to reconsideration if that’s possible.

Put spend on your other credit cards

Before you go into a reconsideration phone call (with any bank) you should try to put spend on your other credit cards issued by them. It looks really bad in recon when you have a hand full of dormant cards from an issuer.

What to say in a Chase reconsideration phone call

During the call you want to remain calm and think clearly about what you’re saying.

At the end of the day, you’re just talking to a credit analyst in private phone conversation so there’s really no need to be nervous. Many of these analysts can be quite friendly (though they sometimes play hardball in business reconsideration calls).

Verify your details

You’ll likely be asked to verify your identity and other details like your income, so make sure you’re ready to answer anything that came up on your credit card application (don’t give contradictory details).

They might also ask you about how much you plan on spending each month/year on the card and what kind of credit line you want. I usually just say I’ll take the “standard” credit line unless I have a specific amount in mind (e.g., $5,000).

Give a legit reason for wanting the product

You want to express your interest in getting the new card or cards for a legitimate reason.

Generally, this does not mean that you’re “just interested in getting the great sign-up bonus.” Try to dig a little deeper in your interests/motivations.

Here are some examples of legitimate reasons for getting new credit cards:

  • You need the credit card(s) to help segregate your expenses for some reason (e.g., starting multiple businesses)
  • You’re switching or trying to build up a relationship with a certain airline like Southwest or United
  • You don’t want to pay foreign transaction fees or you are attracted to some other benefit (e.g., primary rental car insurance)
  • You prefer one interest rate (APR) over another (especially when dealing with balance transfers)
  • I think it’s even okay to tell them that you’re trying to build up a more robust credit profile and earn some decent rewards while in the process.

Typically, a recon call will involve a bit of back and forth.

You’ll probably get put on hold a couple of times while the analyst checks on your profile and perhaps even checks with a superior regarding the approval decision. Sometimes those superiors will override the decision of the analyst, so wait until the end of the call to get excited about anything.

If you have opened a lot of new accounts in the past few months, you should be ready to try to explain yourself (and hopefully you’re not at “lol/24” and can do that with a straight face).

Shifting credit

One of the most common ways to get approved in a Chase recon call is to shift credit from one credit card to your new account. You can proactively suggest this as a solution or you can wait until the analyst suggests it (though they may not always offer that option to you).

This is the one drawback to lowering your credit limits before you apply. If you lower them too much, you may not have any credit to shift around for your approval.

Note: Chase no longer allows you to shift credit between business and personal credit cards.

What if Chase recon denies me?

If your conversation with the Chase reconsideration line does not go your way then you should try to call back later that day or another day to see if you have any luck with another analyst.

Sometimes another credit analyst will view your application more favorably. But note that these agents can usually see the last time you called in and the notes on that conversation.

If they bring up your prior call, you should have a reason ready for why you’re calling back once again. Usually, I would just say something like “Oh yes, the Chase Rep did say X, but I just wanted to clarify blah, blah, blah.”

At a certain point, you’ll just have to accept defeat if multiple calls don’t work, though.

How long can you wait to call reconsideration?

You can usually wait up to 30 days to call into reconsideration about your application but I do not recommend waiting that long. There are plenty of reports of Chase pulling your credit report again if you wait near that long.

So I would call in as soon as I got a rejection or the 7 to 10 day message.

Other reconsideration lines

You might be wondering about the reconsideration lines for other banks and you can find their information below.

American Express Reconsideration Line

American Express doesn’t have a true reconsideration line but you can still call them up and speak to a credit analyst if your application is not approved or is still pending.

Here are the phone numbers you might try:

  • Current Customers: 866-314-0237
  • New Customers: 877-399-3083

Compare American Express cards here.

Barclays Reconsideration Line

There are multiple numbers you can call for Barclays reconsideration. In my experience, they are pretty accommodating but can be inquiry sensitive and they like to see that you’re actually using their credit cards.

  • Barclays Reconsideration Line: 866-408-4064
  • Card Services: 888-232-0780

You can also check your application status online here.

Capital One Reconsideration Line

Capital One is another issuers that doesn’t have a true reconsideration line but you can still contact their customer service line and inquire about your application status.

Sometimes Capital One will tell you that they won’t review your application until you’ve received a response (email or mailer) from them which can be highly annoying.

  • General Customer Service: 1-800-951-6951

If you want to check on your application status, you can call in to the number below (there’s not currently a way to check it online).

  • Application Status Checker: 800-933-5182

Citibank Reconsideration Line

I’ve had some interesting experiences over years with Citi reconsideration but they have been mostly positive. Here is their number:

  • Inquiries: 800-763-9795

Some people will contact the Citi Executive Review Department at CitiBank Executive Review Department, P.O. Box 6000, Sioux Falls, SD, 57117. I’ve never done this but apparently others have had success.

You can check your Citi credit card application status by checking it online or calling the number below:

  • Citi Application Status Number: 1-800-695-5171

Discover Reconsideration Line

Discover reconsideration is notoriously difficult since they don’t often overturn decisions but you can give it a got at the following numbers:

  • Application Services Number: 888-676-3695
  • Customer Service: 1-800-Discover

You can also check your application status online.

Final word

Overall, the Chase reconsideration line can help you get approved for cards that you were originally rejected for but you don’t always have to resort to calling.

It’s good to know about when you should call versus when you should just wait it out. You never know what Chase is going to do with your credit card application but it surely helps to know how to navigate through the post-application process.

Chase Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection Review (Benefits) [2021]

Many people aren’t able to hit the thresholds for earning elite status with hotel programs in order to receive special benefits like a free breakfast, upgrades, and late check-out. But luckily for these people there are some special programs for luxury properties that allow you to receive these elite-like perks!

One of these programs is the Chase Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection. In this article, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about the Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection, including how to access the program and all of the benefits. I’ll also compare it to a couple of the other popular programs out there that offer similar perks.

If you’re more of a visual learner check out the YouTube video at the bottom of the article!

What is the Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection?

The Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection (LHRC) is a program consisting of over 900 luxury properties around the world that offers you elite-like benefits, such as free breakfasts and upgrades.

The Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection is a separate program from the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection and the American Express Fine Hotels and Resort Program (more on those programs below).

Who gets access to the Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection?

Only certain Chase cards get access to the Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection. Chase doesn’t publish an official list of cards that are eligible but we know from prior attempts that the following cards have worked:

To see if your credit card is eligible you can search for hotels here and attempt to navigate through the booking process. After you input your travel dates, you’ll be prompted to enter in the first six digits of your credit card.

Once you input those details, you’ll be able to see the availability and prices for the hotel if your card eligible.

If you don’t have access, you’ll get the following message:

Error: What you entered is not an eligible Chase card number. Please enter the first 6 digits of your eligible Chase card number.

Tip: Use the free app WalletFlo to help you travel the world for free by finding the best travel credit cards and promotions!

What are the Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection benefits?

  • Daily breakfast for two
  • Complimentary Wifi
  • Room upgrade (based on availability)
  • Early check-in and late check-out (based on availability)
  • Special benefit at each property

Breakfast

You will be granted breakfast for two people. The quality of the breakfast will depend on the type of property that you are staying at but because these are higher end luxury properties you can generally expect breakfast to be very solid.

Some hotels will offer breakfast buffets while others may offer a continental breakfast. Also, you might find that some properties place limits on your breakfast credit.

For example, they might state that you have a maximum credit of $60 per day for two people per room, essentially offering you a $30 breakfast credit per person. They also might allow you to choose the restaurant within the hotel that you’d like to enjoy your breakfast at.

Also some properties, like those in Las Vegas, may give you a breakfast credit and allow you to use that breakfast credit throughout the day. If you’re also given a dining and beverage credit along with that, it can be a great way to cover a large chunk of dining costs during your stay.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi will be provided for free with the exception of DumaTau and Little Makalolo where Wi-Fi is not available.

Room upgrade

Typically, the room upgrades are going to be to the next best type of available room. A typical example would be an upgrade from a standard room to a room that has a better view or on a higher floor. Sometimes there may even be specific upgrades designated for this program.

Early check-in and late checkout

With this program you can get early check-in and late checkout, both of which can make your travel experience much more convenient.

However this is one of the big differences between the American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts program because that offers guaranteed late checkout.

Special benefit

The special benefit will vary depending on the property but you can expect things like the following: lunch or dinner for two, a spa treatment, golf green fee waivers, welcome gift, or airport transfers. The value of this perk is usually at $100 but sometimes lower at around $50.

However, sometimes the value can be much higher if you make a premium booking such as booking a suite.

For example, the Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong offers a complimentary round trip private transfer for Hong Kong International Airport or Kai Tak Cruise Terminal or $200 Food and Beverage credit per room, per stay for Suite bookings while normal booking just get a one-way transfer or a $100 credit.

So here’s a rundown of the “heavier” benefits.

  • Dining and spa credits
  • Airport transportations
  • Couple’s massage
  • Afternoon tea
  • Executive Lounge access

And then here are some of the “lighter” benefits, often offered in conjunction with the above.

  • Welcome chocolates
  • Daily Fruits and Newspapers
  • Chinese silk scarf
  • Bottle of wine
  • Complimentary canape service
  • Welcome Drink
Free breakfasts at luxury properties is usually a solid (and valuable) perk.

How does it work?

To receive the Guest Privileges, reservations must be made through an LHRC Travel Specialist or on LHRCollection.com. Simply go the LHRC wesbite, input your eligible credit card number, find the property and room, and then proceed through the checkout phase.

Note that you cannot use your Chase Ultimate Rewards to make these bookings.

Tip: Looking for the best hotel credit cards? Check out the full list here.

Are the rates cheaper?

Sometimes you can find the rates to be the same price as what is publicly available and other times the rates might be more expensive.

If the rates are more expensive then you need to factor in the savings that you’ll get out of the perks since those could easily outweigh the higher price you’re having to pay.

Also, keep in mind that the taxes are included with the LHRC prices and some other OTAs and websites out there may not include those taxes in their listed price.

Can you still earn elite credits and points?

One of the great things about these type of programs is that you can still earn your elite credits and elite points whenever you make a booking. So if you are chasing status then you won’t lose out on those precious stay credits when you book through this program.

Because you are not booking directly with the hotel there’s always the chance that your credits and points don’t show up so you might need to follow up with the hotel after your stay when booking with the LHRC.

You also should still be eligible to receive your own elite benefits. Those benefits should supplement the benefits that you will get from this program. In some cases, your perks might be stronger (e.g., lounge access) but in other cases you may have a bottom-tier or lower-tier status that doesn’t offer perks like breakfast.

I would always mention your elite status and given them your elite number at check-in just to make sure that you get those benefits since your elite status could get lost in the shuffle when making your booking.

Can you cancel or modify your booking?

Yes, but unless things change in the future, you’ll need to call in to do so.

What hotels can you find in LHRC?

Generally, you’re going to be able to find some of the top brands in this program at many locations. I’m not aware of a published directory of these properties so you’ll just need to search for your specific city/location and see which properties show up.

Here is a non-exhaustive list I found of properties in the following cities earlier this year:

Las Vegas

New York

San Francisco

Bangkok

InterContinental New York Times Square.

Can you use additional promos?

The terms states that “Amenities may not be combined with other offers, including tour operator or wholesaler rates and package.”

I take this to mean that you can’t take advantage of things like special promotional rates but it would seem like you could still earn points for promotions like when Hilton offers promotional rates for stays. If you have any experience let me in the comments below!

How does this compare to Amex FHR?

LHRC is very similar to Amex FHR in many ways. The benefits like free breakfast, upgrades, wifi, and special amenity credits overlap but as pointed out the FHR program also offers guaranteed late check-out.

Exclusivity

The FHR program is only available to Platinum/Centurion cardmembers and those with the Amex Business Platinum. Meanwhile, the FHRC is available to a lot of different Chase cardholders.

Special offers

The biggest difference between these two programs is that the FHR offers special offers. These special offers can include things like $200 property credits or even the third night, fourth night, fifth night, or sixth night free. Capitalizing on those free nights, especially when the third night is free offers the potential for huge savings in the realm of several hundred dollars.

For that reason, the FHR program has the potential to be more lucrative. However, those free nights are only offered at select properties and perhaps even select rooms so it’s not like it’s a guaranteed savings at all resorts.

Price differences

I’ve found that the prices between these programs to be pretty similar but there is a big difference between how they are listed. FHR does not include the taxes whenever they show the list price but the LHRC does. So don’t get tricked into thinking FHR is cheaper.

Also, it appears that both programs do not report the resort fees so sometimes you have to attack on additional fees for your state. Resort fees should be visible on the hotel’s website like those that show up in Las Vegas.

5X

The Amex FHR program is now allowing Platinum cardholders to earn 5X with some of their stays as well which is very impressive. The terms and conditions for the LHRC don’t specify which type of payment you must use so it might be possible to switch your credit card at check-out in order to use a card that will earn you more points or to take advantage of special credits.

Inventory

Another difference I found is with inventory.

For example, when I searched for Hong Kong, a city full of top-tier luxury brands, I only found three properties with the LHRC.

  • Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong
  • Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong
  • The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong

But when I searched with the Amex FHR I found nine properties.

  • Conrad Hong Kong
  • Four Seasons
  • Island Shangri-La
  • Mandarin Oriental
  • The Landmark Mandarin Oriental
  • The Langham
  • The Peninsula
  • The Ritz-Carlton
  • The Upper House

Interestingly, some of those hotels populated in the search field for the LHRC but when clicked on they brought up no results. So I’m not sure if those properties will be added or if it is just a quirk of the system. I also found more properties when I searched for the Maldives as well.

Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong OZONE bar.

Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection?

So you might also be wondering about the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection and how that stacks up.

The answer is that it is a step below both the FHR and LHRC.

Here are the benefits for the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection:

  • Best available rate guarantee
  • Automatic room upgrade when available
  • Complementary in room Wi-Fi when available
  • Complementary breakfast for two
  • $25 food and beverage credit
  • VIP guest status
  • Late checkout upon request when available

As you can see, the food and beverage credit is usually at $25 which is significantly lower than the value offered by the special amenities that both the FHR and LHRC offer. In addition, late checkout is only available based on availability and there is no mention of early check-in.

That program does offer VIP guest status but a lot of times that just means something like a box of chocolates sent to your room so I’m not sure that I would place a ton of value on that perk.

The Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection is still a solid program if you do not have access to FHR and LHRC though so I wouldn’t completely dismiss it just because there are better options. You can read more about this program here.

YouTube Video

Final word

Overall, the Luxury Hotels and Resort Collection (LHRC) is a valuable program that adds value to the cards that allow access. If you’re unable to earn elite status with a program or even if you have elite status, you can take advantage of some valuable perks that can save you money on your stay.

I do think that I would take a look at the FHR program first due to the special offers and guaranteed late check-out but I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to booking through the LHRC.

Priority Pass Select Guide (Benefits, Guests, Lounge Lists) [2021]

Priority Pass Select membership can be one of the most valuable credit card perks available. With this membership, you’ll be able to access over 1,300 airport lounges all across the globe. But what exactly are the Priority Pass Select benefits and rules?

In this article, I’ll take an in-depth review of the Priority Pass Select program. I’ll discuss different ways to enroll in Priority Pass Select with different credit cards and go over things like the different guest policies and costs. I’ll also show you how to find Priority Pass lounge locations and what to expect when you visit them.

What is Priority Pass Select?

Priority Pass Select is a type of Priority Pass membership that is offered through various U.S. financial institutions and grants you access to over 1,300 Priority Pass airport lounges all over the globe.

Tip: Use the free app WalletFlo to help you travel the world for free by finding the best travel credit cards and promotions!

Priority Pass membership cost

Priority Pass Select memberships are gained through credit cards so the cost for those memberships are essentially the annual fee paid for those cards.

But there are also different types of Priority Pass memberships that you can purchase without being a credit card holder. Those memberships are listed below.

  • Standard: $99 annual fee
  • Standard Plus: $299 annual fee
  • Prestige: $429 annual fee

Priority Pass Select memberships are very similar to these memberships that you can pay for. For example, some Priority Pass Select memberships will grant you unlimited access while others might limit your visits to only 10 per year.

But one major distinction between the two is that with Priority Pass Select you are often allowed to bring guests with you into the lounge free of charge. And if you exceed your guest limit, you can have guests enter with a reduced fee of around $27 per guest.

If you’re talking about a Priority Pass Select membership that offers unlimited lounge visits, you can quickly see how valuable the membership is. For example, the Prestige membership will cost you $429 per year, so you’re getting at least that much value.

But as noted the Prestige membership does not allow you to bring in guests for free. So if you regularly bring along a companion with you or a family, you’re potentially getting much more than $429 worth of value from your membership.

Priority Pass Select guest policy

Take a look at the cards below and you will notice that the guest policy for the cards differ. Most cards offer two complimentary guests while some other cards also allow for immediate family members to enter or even unlimited guests. As stated, if you exceed the guest policy, you can usually have guests enter with a reduced fee of around $27 per guest.

One thing to take into consideration is that the individual lounges can impose their own restrictions on guest policies. You usually won’t have a problem when bringing in one or two guests but if you’re trying to bring in more than that you could run into issues if the lounge is facing crowding.

How to get a Priority Pass Select membership

There are many different ways to get a Priority Pass membership. Below, I will discuss several of the different credit cards that you can choose from in order to get a membership. I will also highlight some of the key benefits of these cards so that you can have an idea of why these cards might be a good fit for you.

Amex Platinum Card

The American Express Platinum Card is the number one card for lounge access in my opinion. You’ll get Priority Pass membership for you and two other guests but you’ll also get Centurion Lounge access along with Delta Sky Club access, making this the most complete lounge package out there.

The Platinum Card is also a great card if you want elite status, as it offers Gold status with Hilton and Marriott. It’s also a very rewarding card with 5X on airfare and other benefits.

The annual fee for the Platinum Card is $695 but it is offset by the $200 annual Uber credit and the $200 annual airline credit. In addition, you’ll also get a $200 hotel credit, $300 Equinox credit, CLEAR credit, and $240 entertainment credit.

Chase Sapphire Reserve

The Chase Sapphire Reserve offers Priority Pass Select membership for you and two guests. It used to offer unlimited guests but that got a little too popular and Chase cut back the benefit to only allow for two guests.

Beyond Priority Pass, the Sapphire Reserve is a very strong contender of a credit card with its 3X on dining and travel, $300 travel credit, and ability to cash in your points through the Chase Travel Portal at a rate of 1.5 cents per point. It also comes with a host of worthwhile benefits.

The annual fee for the Chase Sapphire Reserve is $550 but with the easy to use $300 travel credit and $60 DoorDash credit, it’s very easy knock down the effective annual fee to $190.

US Bank Altitude Reserve

The US Bank Altitude Reserve Visa Infinite Card offers an interesting Priority Pass membership that gives you four complimentary entries each year and four individual accompanying guest visits as well. After the free visits have been used, the member’s card will be charged a lounge visit fee of $27 per person per visit for the member and each guest.

The Altitude Reserve also comes with a sign-up bonus of 50,000 points (worth $750 in travel) after spending $4,500 within the first 90 days. It also has one of the highest travel credits of $325 making it easy to offset the $400 annual fee.

This is a great card for those who utilize mobile wallets because it earns 3X on eligible mobile wallet purchases, which can be a significant advantage for some. The card also earns 3X on travel booked directly with airlines, hotels, taxis, trains, etc. (but no OTAs).

Amex Hilton Aspire

Hilton Aspire Bonus

The Amex Hilton Aspire will grant you Priority Pass for you and two guests, just like the Platinum Card. The Aspire really shines in a few ways. First, it offers you Hilton Diamond status, which is the top-tier status offered by Hilton. That status can get you free breakfast, lounge access, and suite upgrades, among other benefits.

The Aspire also comes with a number of credits that help offset the $450 annual fee:

  • $250 airline incidental fee statement credit
  • $250 Hilton resort statement credit
  • $100 on property credit at Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts and Conrad Hotels & Resorts when booking the exclusive Aspire Card package

You also get a free anniversary night which can be used at even the most expensive Hilton properties.

And finally you can earn a ton of Hilton points with this card as it comes with the following bonus categories:

  • 14X Hilton Honors Bonus Points at hotels and resorts in the Hilton portfolio worldwide
  • 7X Hilton Honors Bonus Points on flights booked directly with airlines or amextravel.com, car rentals booked directly from select car rental companies and at U.S. restaurants
  • 3X Hilton Honors Bonus Points on other purchases

Amex Hilton Surpass

The Amex Hilton Surpass comes with 10 free Priority Pass lounge passes. You can use these for yourself and for guests if you’d like, so there’s a lot of flexibility with this card.

The Ascend is a much more basic card compared to the Aspire but it’s still a very good hotel credit card. You’ll get Hilton Honors Gold status and the ability to earn one free weekend night at a hotel or resort in the Hilton portfolio after spending $15,000 in purchases in a calendar year

You’ll also get some strong bonus earning potential by being able to earn:

  • 12X Hilton Honors Bonus Points at hotels and resorts in the Hilton portfolio worldwide
  • 6X Hilton Honors Bonus Points at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. restaurants, and U.S. gas stations
  • 3X Hilton Honors Bonus Points on all other eligible purchases

For only a $95 annual fee, this card is a bargain for many people.

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card comes with the standard Priority Pass Select membership that allows access for you and two guests with unlimited visits. Overall, it’s a pretty strong hotel card and also offers a $300 credit towards Marriott that can even be used at room rates and an annual free night for properties that cost up to 50,000 Marriott points.

There’s also some decent bonus earning potential with the card as it earns:

  • 6X on Marriott purchases
  • 3X on US restaurants
  • 3X on airlines booked directly with airlines
  • 2X on other purchases

The card does come with Marriott Gold elite status but that elite status is less valuable than it was before.

Citi Prestige

The Citi Prestige comes with one of the better Priority Pass memberships. You’ll get unlimited visits for yourself and two guests or your immediate family members.

The card earns a whopping 5X on dining and airfare and 3X on cruise lines and hotels, as well as 2X on entertainment. The $250 travel credit is now expanded so you’ll be able to offset the annual fee easier though the fee is increased to $495.

Luxury Card Black Card

Reportedly, the Luxury Card Black Card allows for unlimited guests with your Priority Pass membership. I haven’t been able to confirm that in the terms and conditions but if that’s the case, the Luxury Card offers the most generous type of Priority Pass membership.

Unfortunately, the Black Card is kind of a bust overall. It doesn’t offer a welcome bonus and while it earns 2% back when used for airfare and 1.5% back on all purchases, you can find no annual fee cards that earn that same rate so that’s not entirely impressive.

It does have a $100 airline credit that helps offset the $495 annual fee and some special VIP perks like 24/7 access to Luxury Card Concierge, Luxury Card Travel, and “Priceless” access. But beyond that, there’s not a whole to rave about with this card.

Luxury Card Gold Card

The Luxury Card Gold Card is very similar to the Black Card only it earns 2% back when used for airfare and 2% back on all purchases. Again, that’s not bad but considering there are no-annual fee cards which can earn you the same rates, that’s not that impressive.

Other card options

  • City National Bank Visa Infinite
  • Ritz-Carlton Rewards Card (no longer available for new applicants)

Authorized users

Many of these cards allow authorized users to get access to the Priority Pass lounges. Utilizing authorized users is a great way to get more guests into the lounge with you since each authorized user can bring in their own guests. So for example if you and a companion had a Platinum Card, then you each could bring in two guests for a total of four guests. Many times, the fees for adding authorized users are very reasonable so consider using this to your advantage.

How Priority Pass Select works

The way Priority Pass works is pretty simple.

Get approved for an eligible card

First, you need to get approved for a credit card that has Priority Pass Select.

Enroll/activate

You will typically need to enroll in Priority Pass after you are approved for a credit card, so don’t assume that you will be automatically enrolled. You can usually do this online when logging in to your account but you also might be able to do this by calling in.

Show your card

After you enroll into the program, you should receive your physical card in the mail within a couple of weeks. Make sure that you bring your physical card with you when you visit the lounges.

Many programs will allow you to link your Priority Pass card to the mobile app so you won’t always have to bring the physical card but some lounges have issues when trying to use your app. Thus, I always carry my physical card with me when traveling.

Cancelling

Something you need to know is that if you cancel your credit card you will lose out on the lounge membership immediately. If you somehow are given access to the lounge with your Priority Pass card, you will likely get billed for that visit on your credit card on a later date.

Renewing

Your Priority Pass Select membership should automatically renew if your card remains in good standing. However, it’s a good idea to monitor your card membership to make sure that the renewal process goes smoothly.

Priority Pass MCO Lounge.

Priority Pass Select app (digital card)

You can download the Priority Pass app from the App Store or Google Play.

This app is how you can access your digital card. Also, they are now starting to show indoor airport maps to help you better navigate the terminals and find your lounge. Other features include tracking your visit history and saving your “must visit” lounges to access them from the search screen.

Priority Pass Select benefits (lounges experiences)

The lounge experience can differ dramatically between Priority Pass lounges but here are some benefits you can expect to find at these lounges.

Wifi

Virtually every Priority Pass is going to offer complimentary wifi, at least for a while. Generally, the wifi speed is good enough to get things done but I’ve visited some lounges where the speed was severely lacking.

Food items

The type of food you’ll find in these lounges is going to vary. At the minimum, you’ll usually be able to find snacks and finger foods, such as pretzels, chips, and other light bites. But some lounges will provide you with a spread of hot items — sometimes these are actually pretty tasty items and other times they leave a bit to be desired.

Complimentary drinks

Most Priority Pass lounges that I’ve visited have offered a selection of complimentary alcohol. Beer and wine is common to find but some lounges will have a pretty solid line-up of spirits that you can take advantage of.

Comfy seating

Most lounges will have seating options that are superior to what’s offered in the terminals. Again, it all depends on the lounge.

Showers

Some Priority Pass lounges have showers though there are usually only a small number (or only one shower stall) available. If you want to shower at one of these lounges, your best bet would be to contact the front desk as soon as you arrive in order to secure a stall.

Some of the showers will provide you with amenities like soaps, shampoos, and conditioners, though it varies.

Nap rooms

Nap rooms are more rare to come across but I’ve seen some with some nice nap rooms (sometimes you have to reserve them).

Crowding

With so many credit cards offering Priority Pass now, crowding has definitely become an issue in some of these lounges. As a result, some lounges now limit access to Priority Pass members during busy hours. This is something that you always want to check on before heading out to your lounge.

How to find Priority Pass Select locations

It’s very easy to find Priority Pass lounges.

Simply visit their website and click on “Find a Lounge” at the top of the screen. You can then enter the city, airport name or code.

Once you are taken to the search results, simply click on the “Lounges” tab to see what lounges are available at the airport. You should then be able to select the lounges to find out all of the details for that lounge.

  • Opening Hours
  • Location
  • Conditions
  • Additional Information

You can also easily see the amenities offered like alcohol, showers, wifi, and things like whether Digital Cards are accepted.

It’s really important to make sure that you’ll be able to visit these lounges from the terminal that you’re flying out of. Many airports don’t allow you to connect between terminals after you go through security, so it’s not always practical to visit these lounges.

Sometimes you can exit the terminal and go through security twice to visit a lounge but some of these lounges might not be worth the effort. If you’re trying to figure out whether or not you can get between terminals, Flyertalk is a great place to research and ask questions.

Priority Pass restaurants

One of the cool new trends is that Priority Pass has added airport restaurants to its lounge network. For example, At SFO, you can visit the San Francisco Giants Clubhouse or Yankee Pier.

This is great if you can’t make it to a terminal with a lounge or if the lounges are full. And you can sometimes register multiple guests so you and a small party of three can enjoy a meal together.

These restaurants are constantly changing so you want to make sure that you’re checking the most up to to date information on them before you visit.

Which Priority Pass Select membership is right for you?

Airlines

Since Priority Pass offers you airport lounge access you will likely be seeking out benefits related to airlines. The Platinum Card is a great way to go to maximize your rewards with airlines because it offers 5X rewards on purchases made directly with airlines.

But note that if you want lounge access with specific airlines like United, American Airlines, Delta, etc., there are co-branded cards that you can get that will offer you lounge access for those specific airlines.

Hotels

If you are interested in hotel rewards then the Hilton Aspire Card might be on the top of your list. Personally, I would go with the Hilton Aspire Card because I like that it offers top tier diamond status and also offers such amazing credits. I would also give the American Express Platinum a really good look because it comes with Hilton Gold Status as well as Marriott Gold as well.

Spending

Now, more premium cards are offering bonus spending for various types of bonus categories like dining and travel. The Chase Sapphire Reserve is a great option for earning bonus points on travel purchases and it will also earn you three times the points on dining is well. The new Citi Prestige Card is a great option for maximizing earnings on dining with its new 5X rewards as well.

Limited visits

Some people might only visit airports a few times a year. For these people, they don’t really need an unlimited membership for airport lounges. Instead, they can be 100% satisfied with a card that only provides them with a handful of visits each year. These people might want to consider cards like the Hilton Ascend or Altitude Reserve.

Multiple cards with Priority Pass

A lot of people wonder if they should hold multiple cards that offer them a Priority Pass Select membership.

The answer to this question is very often: yes.

Now that so many valuable credit cards offer Priority Pass memberships, it is almost difficult to not have multiple memberships with Priority Pass. In fact, right now I could have a hand full of Priority Pass memberships if I chose to enroll each individual credit card.

But that is not because I am a Priority Pass fanatic. It is just because there are several cards out there that offer such great benefits that they are worth picking up individually.

For example, I hold the American Express Platinum Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve, American Express Hilton Aspire, and will soon be picking up the Citi Prestige. Each of those cards offer me unique benefits that I can take advantage of in different ways.

  • American Express Platinum Card: Centurion Lounge access, 5X airfare earning Membership Rewards, FHR
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve: 3X on dining and travel earning Ultimate Rewards, 1.5 cents per point through the Chase Travel Portal
  • Hilton Aspire: Hilton Diamond status, 14X on Hilton purchases
  • Citi Prestige: 4th night free, 5X on dining and airfare earning Citi ThankYou Points

If you do enroll in multiple Priority Pass programs then I suggest that you mark your Priority Pass cards so that you do not get your memberships mixed up. This is especially important if the guest policy is different for your different cards.

Final word

Priority Pass Select can be a valuable credit card perk. But it’s often a secondary perk for a lot of these credit cards that offer strong perks like elite status and great bonus earning potential. Because so many cards offer Priority Pass membership, it isn’t difficult to prioritize these other benefits and go with the card that offers you the best perks beyond Priority Pass.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Car Rental Benefits & Discounts [2021]

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is known for offering some of the best benefits out of any travel rewards credit card. Some of these perks relate to rental cars and can save you some serious cash. Here’s a look at all of the Chase Sapphire Reserve rental car benefits and discounts and how you can utilize them to save you some money on your travels.

What are the Chase Sapphire Reserve car rental Benefits?

The Chase Sapphire Reserve comes with two key car rental benefits: primary rental car insurance and special perks with partners Silvercar, Avis, and National Car Rental.

Primary rental car coverage is great because it can prevent you from having to file a claim with your insurance company and save you money on your monthly premium. And the perks for the rental car partners can provide you with special deals, discounts, and even upgrades.

I’ll discuss both of these in detail.

Tip: Use WalletFlo for all your credit card needs. It’s free and will help you optimize your rewards and savings!

Primary rental car insurance

The Chase Sapphire Reserve comes with rental car insurance which is also referred to as “Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver.” For the Chase Sapphire Reserve (and Preferred), this coverage is primary.

This means you do not have to file a claim with any other source of insurance before you can receive coverage under this benefit, which also means you’ll likely be able to avoid fees and a potential spike in your monthly premium.

The insurance will cover claims that do not exceed the following limits:

  • Claims up to $75,000
  • Vehicle rental periods that do not exceed nor intend to exceed 31 consecutive days

This is one of the most comprehensive rental car coverage policies offered by any credit card out there. The one key thing to remember is that the card does not offer protection for liability coverage (so someone could still sue you if you ran into them). You can inquire with your insurance company or rental car company about liability coverage to make sure you’re covered for that.

You can find out more details for the Sapphire Reserve here.

Rental car perks with partners

The Sapphire Reserve offers rental car perks with three different rental car partners

  • Silvercar
  • Avis
  • National Car Rental

Silvercar

Silvercar is an Audi-owned car rental service that’s really taken off over the past few years. It’s an app-enabled program that allows you to efficiently rent and pick up your vehicles. The only drawback is that it’s only available in limited cities, though most big cities offer the service.

With the Chase Sapphire Reserve, you can get 30% off Silvercar rentals of at least two days when entering promo code VINFINITE at the time of booking.

This is a benefit offered to other Visa Infinite cards as well. So for example if you have the Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card you can also get this 30% discount.

Avis

Once you get your Sapphire Reserve enroll in Avis Preferred you’ll be able to save up to 30% on qualifying rentals. This is also a Visa Infinite cardholder benefit that will allow you to save up to 30% off Avis base rates when making a reservation with Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number S107100.

National Car Rental

The Sapphire Reserve will get you a 25% discount and you’ll also be able to receive Emerald Club Executive with contract ID 5030849.

Emerald Club Executive benefits include:

Priority Service

Get expedited services when renting in Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean.

Guaranteed Upgrades

You’re always guaranteed a free upgrade when you reserve using the Midsize rate (in US and Canada).

Drop & Go

With convenient email receipts, just drop off your car and go (if your car has not been damaged during the rental).

Executive Area Access

Choose any car (full size and above) in the Executive Area and only pay the mid size rate (in US and Canada).

Faster Free Rental Days

Earn 1 rental credit for every qualified car rental. Free Rental Day = 6 credits.

No Second Driver Fees (excluding rentals in Europe)

Never pay extra when family members and business associates do the driving.

3X on travel

The Chase Sapphire Reserve also earns 3X on all travel purchases, which includes rental car purchases.

Rental car purchases are only one type of travel purchase that qualifies, though.

Chase states that the following purchases are eligible to be considered travel:

Merchants in the travel category include airlines, hotels, motels, timeshares, car rental agencies, cruise lines, travel agencies, discount travel sites, campgrounds and operators of passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages.

$300 travel credit

Just like the bonus category on travel, the annual $300 travel credit can be used on a lot of purchases including rental cars, so this is a great way to cover your rental car travel expenses.

Compared to the Platinum

The first big difference with the Amex Platinum Card is that it only offers secondary rental car coverage. You actually have to pay extra for primary rental car coverage if you hold an Amex card.

The Platinum Card also offers different perks for different rental car brands:

  • Avis Preferred status
  • Hertz Gold Plus Rewards
  • National Emerald Club Executive status

Since the Avis Preferred and Hertz Gold are available to everyone and National Emerald Club Executive status is available with the Sapphire Reserve, there’s not a significant difference between the rental car perks offered by these cards. There may be some special discounts just for Platinum cardmembers so those are usually on par with the discounts you get as a Visa Infinite cardmember.

Overall, with the 25% and 30% discounts along with the Silvercar perks and primary rental car insurance, I think that the Reserve’s rental car perks are superior to the Platinum Card.

Read more about the the Amex Platinum rental car perks here.

Other Sapphire Reserve benefits

Don’t forget that these rental car perks are only some of the perks offered by the Sapphire Reserve. You can read more about other perks like the Priority Pass airport lounge access, Chase Travel Portal, Chase Shopping Portal, and other benefits here.

Final word

The Sapphire Reserve offers great rental car benefits. With primary rental car coverage, you can save money and sleep easier knowing that you’ve got primary coverage in the event of an accident. You can also get great 25% and 30% discounts when booking, so these are perks that you definitely want to take advantage of.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Score: What Are My Approval Odds? [2021]

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is one of the hottest credit cards on the market with some of the top benefits so naturally people are curious about what credit score is needed to get approved for the Sapphire Reserve.

It’s great that more consumers are doing their research before applying for credit cards these days but there’s a lot more that goes into a credit card approval decision than just a credit score.

Here are a few things you can look at to get a good sense of your Chase Sapphire Reserve approval odds.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Score: What’s Needed?

Unfortunately, credit scores can sometimes be very deceptive.

That’s because someone with practically no credit history can still have a score in the 700s, which is considered a “great” score. In reality, a 700+ credit score with no credit history won’t do you much good when applying for the Sapphire Reserve.

So before we get into the ideal Chase Sapphire Reserve credit score, let’s go over some of the most important factors on your credit report and how those will be considered for your approval decision.

If you need a quick refresher on how credit scores are determined, click here

Three very important Chase Sapphire Reserve approval criteria are:

Credit history for the Sapphire Reserve

If you have virtually no credit history, you probably don’t want to apply for the Sapphire Reserve. For example, if your oldest account is 3 months old, you’ll likely struggle to get approved.

If that’s the case, I highly recommend going for a card like the Chase Freedom. The Freedom comes with no annual fee, some great bonus earning potential, but most of all, it’s one of the easier Chase cards to get approved for.

You don’t have to go with the Freedom, there are plenty of other credit cards designed for people with “fair” credit that you can consider. The benefit to going with the Freedom though is that you’re able to establish your relationship with Chase which will help you get approved for a Sapphire card later on.

Utilization can be important, too. You should strive to keep your overall utilization below 30% but that’s not to say you won’t get approved with higher utilization.

You need to also pay attention to the utilization on your specific credit cards. For example, if you already have another Chase issued credit card and it’s maxed out, Chase is not going to like the way that looks. If that’s the case, then you want to try to pay that off or down as soon as you can.

Late payments

If you have recent late payments (late payments within the past year or two), you might get some push back because of those. (This is especially true if your late payments were with Chase.)

But just because you have negative marks on your credit report doesn’t mean you can’t get approved — there are plenty of data points out there of people getting approved for the Reserve even with blemishes on their credit report.

If you have really fresh late payments that just hit in the past few months, I would probably wait several months before I tried applying. Assuming you don’t mess up again, just waiting 6 months after a late payment can sometimes improve your score a decent amount.

Credit score needed for the Sapphire Reserve

Assuming you have at least a couple of  years of account history (with any bank), I’d recommend waiting until your credit score is close to 720 to apply for the Sapphire Reserve.

But this is not a strict cut-off requirement whatsoever.

I’ve known people personally who have been approved for the Reserve with credit scores in the high 600s. So if you have a credit score of 690, for example, it’s still possible to get approved for the Reserve.

The thing to note in this situation is that typically you’ll need to have a more established credit profile if your score is below 700. So if you have a 690 credit score but 7+ years of solid credit history and no blemishes on your record, it might be worth giving it a shot to apply. If you have had another card issued by Chase for several years, that’s another major factor to be considered.

At the same time, don’t get too cocky if you have a score above 720. If your credit profile is still very thin, you might need to build it up more before applying.

Income needed for the Sapphire Reserve

One of the most important Chase Sapphire Reserve requirements for approval is the income requirement.

The Reserve is a premium credit card and these usually require you to have a higher income.

This is especially true since the minimum credit line for the Reserve seems to be $10,000. If you have a lower income, Chase might not feel good about granting you that credit line.

Typically, I’d recommend that you have an income at least  $40,000 range. If you do enough research, you’ll see some data points of approvals with income in the $30,000 and even $20,000 range, but I would not like my odds with those figures.

If it were me, I’d only feel comfortable applying for the Sapphire Reserve with an income of $45,000+.

Keep in mind that if you have access to your spouse’s/parent’s income, you can report your household income in many instances.

Other income related factors come into play such as your monthly rent or mortgage. If you’re cutting things close with your monthly rent payments and your income is borderline, expect a tougher time getting approved for the Sapphire Reserve. You can read more data points on income needed for Chase credit cards here

Consider going for the Chase Freedom if you have a lower income.

Open up a Chase bank account

If you think you’re a borderline candidate for getting approved, one thing you can do is open up a Chase bank account.

If you maintain that bank account for a few months, it might help push the needle toward the direction of getting approved. Do your best to keep the account in good shape. Avoid getting hit with overdraft fees or anything that could potentially make you look less financially responsible.

Before you apply

Once you’re ready to apply for the Sapphire Reserve, then do yourself a favor and  read about the Chase application rules first. The Chase Sapphire Reserve is subject to the Chase 5/24 Rule (along with other restrictions) and this article will explain everything you need to know about those rules and restrictions.

Also, if you’re a borderline applicant, your Sapphire Reserve application might end up in a Chase reconsideration phone call. For that reason, make sure you read up on my tips for the Chase reconsideration line.

If you pay close attention to the above articles, you’ll be well equipped to move forward with your Reserve application.

Chase Sapphire Reserve qualifications

So in summary, you want to consider the following qualifications:

  • Credit account history
  • Utilization
  • Payment history
  • Credit score
  • Income
  • Relationship with Chase
  • Chase application rules
  • Chase reconsideration protocol

Having an understanding of all of these will give your great insight into your Chase Sapphire Reserve approval odds.

Final word

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is definitely one of the top credit cards available.

So understandably, Chase doesn’t want to give it out to everyone. But if you follow the advice in this article and do what you can do to build up a credit history, clean credit report, have a decent income, and try to establish relationship with Chase, you’ll be increasing your approval odds.

In the end remember that’s it’s impossible to know what Chase will or will not do with your application, so sometimes you just have to apply to get your answer.

Chase Sapphire Peloton Credits Ultimate Guide [2021]

More and more credit cards are now offering special credits. The trick with these credits is knowing how to use them and ensuring that you don’t forget to use them or forget when to cancel them.

In this article, I’ll break down the Chase Peloton credits and explain to you how they work and how you might be able to optimize them even if you don’t own a Peloton bike.

What is Peloton?

Peloton is a brand that sells exercise equipment, including exercise bikes and treadmills, and also provides an array of different fitness related classes via its app.

The exercise equipment comes with HD touchscreen monitors and speakers that allow you to get immersed in classes, including live classes with world-class instructors.

You can track your performance metrics and also monitor your position on the leaderboard as you compete with others.

The exercise bikes are known for being high-quality but they are also pretty pricey ranging from around $1,900 to $2,500. You can apply for financing though which can result in payments of around $50 to $65 a month.

As explained in more detail below, you do not have to purchase a Peloton exercise bike in order to use the app or the Sapphire credit.

What is the Chase Peloton credit?

The Chase Peloton credit offers you a statement credit for Peloton Digital Memberships and All-Access Memberships.

So the credits do not go towards the price of the hardware but instead are used for the monthly memberships.

There are two different types of monthly memberships you can sign up for.

The Peloton Digital Membership costs 12.99 per month while the All-Access Memberships cost $39 per month.

The more expensive All-Access Membership is designed for those who purchase the hardware equipment.

Tip: Use WalletFlo for all your credit card needs. It’s free and will help you optimize your rewards and savings!

What cards get the Chase Peloton credit?

The following cards will receive the Chase Peloton credit:

The Chase Sapphirre Preferred will offer you a $60 statement credit through December 31, 2021.

Meanwhile, the Chase Sapphire Reserve and the JP Morgan Reserve will offer you $120 in statement credits through December 31 of 2021.

If you are going with the basic $12.99 Digital Membership Monthly Subscription, another way to look at this is that you can get up to 4.6 months free with the Chase Sapphirre Preferred and 9.2 months free with the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

If you are going with the $39 All-Access Membership, another way to look at this is that you can get up to 1.5 months free with the Chase Sapphirre Preferred and 3 months free with the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

How to use these credits

The first thing to be aware of is that these credits are only good through December 31 of 2021.

So if you have the Chase Sapphirre Preferred, you want to be sure to start triggering your credit about six months from the end of the year.

If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve you want to start triggering your credit about 10 months from the end of the year.

Once you are ready to begin your membership you can go here to initiate the membership.

Tip: If you are a new member, you should be able to receive a free 30 day trial for the digital membership monthly subscription. So remember to factor that in when beginning a membership.

How to optimize these credits

If you already are using or already were thinking about subscribing to a Digital Membership Monthly Subscription or the All-Access Membership, then you will save with these credits and your savings are pretty straightforward (but see the below FAQ).

If you currently do not use Peloton there still may be some value to be had with these credits.

That’s because you don’t have to have a Peloton bike or treadmill in order to sign up for and use the Peloton Digital Membership classes.

You can simply obtain a membership and participate in these classes via the app even if you do not own a Peloton exercise equipment.

You can access these classes on the peloton app using your phone, iPad, android device, Fire TV, or even on the web.

They have many courses that you might be interested in well.

For example, there are classes for things like strength, yoga, cardio, meditation, running, stretching and even walking.

There are thousands of classes and some are live while others are on demand.

My advice would be to download the app from the App Store and browse through the different classes to see if anything interests you.

Increased bonus categories

Chase recently announced that Sapphire Preferred cardholders can earn 5x on Peloton purchases and Sapphire Reserve cardholders can earn 10x through March 2022. There is a limit to the total number of points you can earn and it is limited at 25,000 for the Sapphire Preferred and 50,000 points for the Sapphire Reserve.

Also, there is a minimum purchase amount of of $1,800 that applies to your purchase of Bike, Tread, and accessory purchases.

Chase Peloton credit FAQ

How do I sign up?

If you are a new member you will want to sign up on this page.

In order to trigger your credit, be sure that your payment method is one of the eligible Chase cards.

Note: If you purchase your membership through the Apple App Store or Google Play App Store you will not qualify for the offer.

What if I am already a Peloton member?

If you are already a member, go here to read about instructions on what to do.

Basically, you might have to switch who manages your membership from something like the App Store to Peloton but this is pretty easy to do.

Do I have to use the credit in consecutive months?

No, the great thing about this credit is that you do not have to use it in consecutive months and can pause your membership if you would like.

Just keep in mind the deadlines mentioned above because if you wait too long to use your credits you will run out of time and not be able to optimize them.

Will I be billed after I use the credits?

After you have used all of your credits, you will continue to be charged for your membership so if you want to avoid getting charged you will need to cancel the membership.

When will the statement credit show up?

You should see the statement credit post to your account the same day you make your qualifying Peloton transaction.

It may take one or two billing cycles for it to show up on your credit card billing statement.

Do authorized users get the credit?

Authorized users do not get an additional $60 or $120 credit.

However, if an authorized user card is used on a membership they can trigger the credit attached to the primary cardmember.

Final word

This is a fantastic way to save money if you are already a Peloton customer.

If you are not a Peloton customer but are interested in fitness, this could still be a very worthwhile credit to use because you can get access to thousands of classes, including live classes.

If you are more of a couch potato then this credit does not do you much good but perhaps you could use it on somebody else?

Chase Sapphire 48 Month Rule Explained [2021]

Knowing how to navigate credit card application rules is extremely important for optimizing your credit card rewards. If you don’t know what you’re doing or you simply are not aware of the rules, you could be costing yourself thousands of dollars in value.

One of the most important rules to be aware of is the Chase Sapphire 48 month rule. The Chase Sapphire 48 month rule was a pretty big blow when it was unveiled a couple of years ago because it cut down on the bonuses available to people. But if you’re patient enough, this rule doesn’t have to limit you so much.

What is the Chase Sapphire 48 month rule?

The Sapphire 48 month rule means that you cannot receive a bonus or even get approved for a Sapphire card within 48 months of receiving a bonus from another Sapphire card.

Below, I will go into detail about the Sapphire 48 month rule.

But I would strongly recommend that you look into downloading the free app WalletFlo that calculates your eligibility for cards like this. Not only does it calculate the Sapphire 48 month rule but it also calculates eligibility for other major banks like American Express, Citibank, Discover, etc. You won’t have to worry about calculating these things yourself and can simply automate your credit card strategy.

The actual text of the rule

You can find the text of this rule by clicking on “offer details” on the main application page for the credit card.

The actual text of the full Sapphire eligibility rule states the following:

The product is not available to either (i) current cardmembers of any Sapphire credit card, or (ii) previous cardmembers of any Sapphire credit card who received a new cardmember bonus within the last 48 months.

So there are basically two parts to this rule.

The first is that you cannot be a current card member of any Sapphire credit card.

So let’s say that you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve and you are trying to apply for the Sapphire Preferred. Even if you received your bonus for the Sapphire Reserve five years ago, you would still not be eligible for the Sapphire Preferred until you close or product change your card.

Many people choose to downgrade their Sapphire cards to one of the Chase Freedom cards so that they can retain some decent rewards while also avoiding an annual fee. Typically, I would advise to wait at least 30 days after closing or product changing a card to re-apply. Others may only wait one week but I like to play things safe.

The second part of the rule is the actual 48 month rule. This simply means that you have to wait 48 months (or four years) from receiving a bonus to be eligible for the card/bonus again. (Again, notice that the rule applies to any Sapphire credit card.)

The big question is when do they consider your bonus received?

How the 48 months is calculated

I think one of the most common questions I see is how is the 48 months calculated?

Does it start from the date that you meet your minimum spend, received your bonus, or when your statement closes? Does it occur on an exact date or is it rounded to the end or beginning of a month?

It’s hard to get a straight answer on questions like this but the general consensus seems to be that the 48 month clock starts to run from the statement close date of the statement that contains the arrival of your bonus points.

So let’s say that you received your bonus points on March 23, 2020.

Now let’s assume that your statement ran from the period of March 12 through April 11. Many people would state that your 48 month clock would reset on April 12, 2024. I would agree with this.

It can sometimes be difficult to track down when exactly you received your points or what statement they came in. And that is why WalletFlo can be so helpful.

The app conservatively estimates when you would receive your bonus so that you can guarantee you’ll be eligible whenever you receive your notification.

I prefer to go with a very conservative method when calculating eligibility because of a few reasons.

First, we don’t always know exactly how these rules are calculated.

For example, I have seen data points where the 5/24 rule is calculated in different ways based on the type of credit reports that were pulled. So there is not always an exact science to how these eligibility rules are done. But if you go conservative then you can almost guarantee that you won’t be surprised by anything.

The other thing to consider is that these type of things can change. So just because something was calculated one way three years ago, that does not mean it will be the same this year.

Authorized users

It’s important to remember that an authorized user is not affected by this rule because they do not receive a bonus. Chase also does not consider you to be a current cardmember if you are only an authorized user.

Final word

The Sapphire 48 month rule requires you to be pretty patient when applying for a new Sapphire card. You typically would calculate your 48 month period by finding the statement close date of the statement in which your points arrived. Then just count four years from that date. But one very easy way to keep tabs on your eligibility for this card and for many others is to simply use WalletFlo.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Review [2021]

The Chase Sapphire Reserve exploded in popularity in 2016 and ever since then it has been known as one of the most valuable travel rewards credit cards available. Its highlights include things like the welcome and spend bonuses, special benefits, and all of the amazing travel and purchase protections.

In this review article, I’ll cover everything you need to know about the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Chase Sapphire Reserve intro

  • 50,000 Ultimate Rewards after spending $4,000 in the first three months
  • 3X on dining and travel
  • 10X on Lyft
  • $300 travel credit
  • $60 DoorDash credit
  • Priority Pass Select
  • Complimentary year of Lyft Pink
  • One-year DashPass membership
  • Luxury hotel benefits
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Great travel and purchase protections
  • $550 annual fee

Welcome bonus

Once upon a time the Chase Sapphire Reserve had a 100,000 point welcome bonus but that is just a thing of the past at this point.

Now-a-days, the standard Chase Sapphire Reserve welcome bonus is 50,000 Ultimate Rewards after spending $4,000 in the first three months after account opening. This is a very strong bonus (although it is worth mentioning that the Chase Sapphirre Preferred has a higher bonus of 60,000 points after meeting its minimum spend).

Just how much these Ultimate Rewards are worth depends on how you choose to use them.

If you simply use them for cashback, you would get one cent per point which means that 60,000 points would be worth $600. That’s not a horrible redemption but as I will show below, if you utilize your points for travel you will be able to net much more value.

Chase Travel Portal 50% bonus

As a Sapphire Reserve member, you will receive a 50% bonus on your redemptions through the Chase Travel Portal. This means that if you redeemed your Ultimate Rewards in the Chase Travel Portal, you’ll be able to book things like airfare, hotels, car rentals, and cruises at a rate of 1.5 cents per point which would put the value of 50,000 points at $750, which is very competitive.

This is also much better than the rates you get redeeming your points through Amex Travel.

Therefore, this 50% bonus is one of the key perks of the card.

Chase travel partners

To get maximum value for your points, you would want to transfer your points out to travel partners. Here are all of the current Chase transfer partners:

  • Aer Lingus
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Emirates
  • JetBlue
  • Flying Blue (Air France/KLM)
  • Iberia Airways
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards
  • United MileagePlus
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
  • Hyatt
  • Marriott
  • IHG

You can transfer your points to all of these partners at a 1:1 ratio.

In some cases, you can use your Ultimate Rewards to fly first class and get ridiculous value.

For example, I booked Lufthansa first class with 110,000 United miles and the fees for the flight were only $112.13. This flight would have cost $8,945 so with all fees factored in, I got 8 cents in value per mile on this redemption! That means 50,000 Ultimate Rewards would be worth around $4,000!

Get outsized value when flying first class.

Eligibility

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is subject to the Chase credit card application rules including the Chase 5/24 rule and the dreaded Sapphire 48-month rule, not to mention the 2/30 rule.

Instead of trying to keep up with calculating all of these rules yourself, I highly recommend that you sign up for the free app WalletFlo which will automate your eligibility for all of these credit card rules.

You can also set up notifications so that you are reminded when you are finally eligible along with keeping tabs on your annual fees, upgrade history, etc.

Bonus categories

  • 3X on dining and travel
  • 10X on Lyft

3X on dining and travel

The Sapphire Reserve earns 3X on dining and travel. At a WalletFlo valuation of 1.73 cents, that’s an unlimited 5.2% return on travel which is amazing.

The travel category is extremely broad so it’s very easy to rack up a lot of points on your travel expenses. And as you will see below, the Reserve has some solid travel protections so it just makes even more sense to use it on your travel purchases.

10X total points on Lyft

You will earn 10X points on Lyft rides through March 2022. This amounts to roughly 17% cashback which is a super competitive rate. If you are already a Lyft user, this could amount to substantial savings. Also keep reading below to find out more about the Lyft Pink benefits.

Travel and dining credits

It’s easy to be turned off by a $550 annual fee but when you have easy to use credits, you can quickly knock down that effective annual fee to under $200.

$300 travel credit

The Chase Sapphire Reserve’s $300 travel credit offsets the hefty $550 annual fee down to $250, which makes the card much more attractive and easier to justify.

The travel credit is special because unlike the travel credits offered by many other credit card issuers, this travel credit is remarkably broad. Chase defines what would be considered “travel” in its terms and conditions and it includes:

Merchants in the travel category include airlines, hotels, motels, timeshares, car rental agencies, cruise lines, travel agencies, discount travel sites, campgrounds and operators of passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages.

$60 DoorDash credit

The Chase Sapphire Reserve offers a $60 annual statement credit for 2020 and 2021 ($60 for each calendar year) that can be used on DoorDash purchases (DoorDash is a food delivery service similar to UberEats).

The unique feature about this credit is that it can be used all at once so you don’t have to keep up with recurring monthly credits.

Tip: Check out the free app WalletFlo so that you can optimize your credit card spend by seeing the best card to use! You can also track credits, annual fees, and get notifications when you’re eligible for the best cards!

Lounge access (Priority Pass Select)

With the Chase Sapphire Reserve, you will get a Priority Pass Select membership which will get you access to a network of over 1,300 airport lounges all around the world.

With these airport lounges you can get free wifi, drinks, food, showers, nap rooms, and comfy and quiet areas to relax in when waiting for your flights.

You’ll get free access for yourself and up to two guests. In addition, you will also be able to receive the credits for the Priority Pass restaurants which are located in select airports.

The restaurant access is a competitive edge when compared to the Priority Pass membership offered by American Express cards but if you want the ultimate lounge access, I still think the Amex Platinum Card has the best overall lounge benefits.

Dining area in airport lounge
Cabo Priority Pass Lounge.

Complimentary year of Lyft Pink

Cardmembers receive one complimentary year of Lyft Pink, a $199 minimum value. Lyft Pink membership comes with the following perks:

  • 15% off unlimited car rides
  • Priority airport pickups
  • Relaxed cancellations
  • Surprise offers
  • Waived lost and found fees
  • Bikes and scooters

If you regularly use Lyft that 15% off could really save you a lot of money over the course of one year. And remember, in addition to that you’ll be earning 10X on Lyft rides!

Just keep in mind, the primary cardholder or an authorized user will need to activate the benefit by March 31, 2022. Read more about how this Lyft perk works here.

DashPass Subscription

As a cardmember you will get a complimentary one-year DashPass membership, which is DoorDash’s subscription service that provides unlimited restaurant deliveries with a $0 delivery fee and reduced service fees on orders over $12.

When you order a delivery, you will typically have to pay a delivery fee which can range but is generally a few bucks (~$2 to $5). So with 24 annual orders (2 per month), you could be saving ~$50-$120 with the waived delivery fees alone!

Normally, this membership would cost you $9.99 per month, so that’s a high potential for savings over the span of one year.

Global Entry or TSA Pre-Check Credit

With the Sapphire Reserve, you’ll receive a statement credit of up to $100 every four years as reimbursement for the application fee charged to your card for Global Entry and TSA-Pre Check.

With TSA-Pre Check you get to enjoy the following benefits:

  • Shoes can stay on
  • Belt can stay on
  • Light jackets can stay on
  • Laptops allowed to stay in bag
  • Liquids (3-1-1 Rule) can stay in bag

And with Global Entry, you can get expedited access back into the country through both immigrations and customs.

Authorized users

With the Sapphire Reserve, you can add authorized users for $75 each. You can read more about the Sapphire Reserve authorized user benefits here

Events and experiences

You can get exclusive access to some pretty cool events in different industries like music, sports, and entertainment. These include some high profile events like the Sundance Film Festival. Rental car benefits

As a Sapphire Reserve member, you can enroll in car rental rewards programs from National Car Rental, Avis, and Silvercar and get enhanced benefits, such as upgrades and car rental discounts, savings on luxury and premium rental car rates, plus promotions and other offers.

Travel and purchase protections

You could easily argue that the Sapphire Reserve has the best comprehensive set of travel protections. Just take a look at the list below to get a sense of how many different types of travel protections you can get with this card.

  • Trip Interruption & Cancellation
  • Trip Delay Reimbursement
  • Baggage Delay Reimbursement
  • Lost or damaged Luggage
  • Primary rental car coverage
  • Roadside assistance
  • Emergency Medical and Dental Benefit
  • Travel and Emergency Assistance
  • Emergency Evacuation & Transportation
  • Travel accident insurance

I’ve written in detail about all of these protections but some of the protections that stand out include the following.

Primary rental car coverage — Not many credit cards offer primary rental car coverage and so this makes the Sapphire Reserve one of the best cards to use for rental cars. With primary rental car coverage you can avoid paying the rental car company for coverage and also avoid having to file a claim with your rental car insurance company. It’s a double win.

Trip cancellation — Getting coverage for trip cancellation or interruption for up to $10,000 is very competitive. If your trip has to be canceled for a covered reason such as you getting sick, you can get reimbursed for all of your qualified prepaid expenses.

Baggage delay reimbursement — If your baggage is delayed by a common carrier for more than six hours, you can get covered for essential expenses for up to $100 for a maximum of five days. Many cards don’t offer baggage delay reimbursement or they have more stringent requirements in order to get coverage.

Purchase protections

  • Purchase protection
  • Extended Warranty Protection
  • Return Protection

What’s cool about the Chase Sapphire Reserve is that it also has amazing purchase protection offering you protection on purchases up to $10,000 in value and up to 120 days after the time of purchase. This is one of the most competitive purchase protections offered.
