Get over $600 with new American Express offer

Offers contained within this article maybe expired.

There are some cash back credit cards that are so lucrative that you should consider them even if you are not a “cashback person.”

The Amex Blue Cash Preferred is certainly one of those cards, especially right now when it has one of its great limited-time offers. Take a look at the new offer that is perfect for grocery store/streaming spenders and those who might be interested in 0% APR as the holidays approach.

The offer

Offer no longer available.

Right now, you can earn $300 cash back after you spend $3,000 in purchases within the first six months of account opening.

And in addition to that, the $95 annual fee for this credit card is waived the first year. Learn how to apply here.

This is a solid deal and is worthy of WalletFlo diamond ranking 💎 — I’ll explain why.

First, getting $300 is generally a solid cash back welcome bonus but more importantly, it’s one of the best bonuses offered for this card. Typically, this bonus is limited to $250 cash back.

Second, in this case, the spend requirement is $3,000 but you get a full six months to reach it. All you have to do is spend $500 per month to hit the minimum spend and many people can do that with groceries alone.

And finally, the annual fee is waived the first year, so there is no risk of dropping into the negative the first year if you don’t hit your bonus for some reason.

Tip: Use WalletFlo for all your credit card needs. It’s free and will help you optimize your rewards and savings!

The Amex Blue Cash Preferred card is special because of its bonus categories, which include:

  • 6% back at US supermarkets, on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1%)
  • 6% back on select U.S. streaming subscriptions
  • 3% back on transit
  • 3% cash back at US gas stations

As you might’ve guessed the main attraction here is the 6% back on US supermarkets on up to $6,000 of spend.

6% of $6,000 is $360.

This means that if you earn the Amex Blue Cash Preferred welcome bonus and max out your grocery spend, you will earn $660 in rewards before you ever have to pay an annual fee.

I will say that one major consideration is whether or not you should get the Amex Gold Card — another great card for groceries (and dining).

I usually prefer to earn 4X on groceries with the Amex Gold Card (up to $25,000 per year). That is because I value Membership Rewards at 1.75 cents per point so 4X comes out 7% back.

(It’s worth remembering that the Amex Blue Cash Preferred does not earn Membership Rewards.)

The other big reason to get the Gold Card is that it currently comes with an all-time high 60,000 point offer after you spend $3,000 in the first six months.

If you value Membership Rewards at 1.75 cents per point, that’s $1,050 worth of points. This is almost twice as high as the standard welcome bonus!

Tip: Because the Gold Card is a charge card and the Blue Cash Preferred is a credit card, you can get both at the same time. If you want to diversify your earnings between points and cash back, that’s a great move especially since the annual fee is waived the first year for the Blue Cash Preferred.

It’s worth noting that you can also compound your points by earning a super competitive 6% back on streaming subscriptions. The only issue with this category is that you need to be spending a whole lot of money on streaming in order to earn serious rewards.

You can look to capture savings on Amazon Music Unlimited, Apple Music and TV, Disney+, ESPN+, Hulu, iHeartRadio, Sling TV, SiriusXM, Spotify, YouTube TV, and others.

The 3% back on transit is pretty decent and the 3% cashback on gas is pretty good as well.

0% APR

Something else at this card has to offer Is a 0% APR period.

You will not have to pay interest for 12 months on your purchases with this card which is absolutely perfect for someone gearing up for some holiday shopping.

Final word

This is a very attractive offer for somebody looking to earn a solid amount of cash back, especially if you are into spend on groceries and streaming. Since you now have six months to obtain the welcome bonus and the annual fee is waived the first year, it’s easier than ever to earn over $600 in cash back with only a moderate level of spend.

New unprecedented Marriott credit card offers roll out

As we approach the holidays, we are in yet another sign-up season for credit cards. We’re seeing some of the best ever offers for several popular travel credit cards like the Amex Gold Card which is offering an all-time high 60,000 point offer after spending $4,000 in the first three months.

Update: Offer no longer available

But hotel credit cards are also getting in on the action.

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant and the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless credit card are offering two extremely appealing offers that have special value we have not seen before. If you were ever looking at getting a hotel card, especially a Marriott card, this would be the time to seriously consider applying for these.

Below, I’ll break down why these offers are so valuable and give you some insight into the type of value that you can expect to get from them.

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant

  • 6X Bonvoy points on Marriott
  • 3X at U.S. restaurants
  • 3X on flights booked directly with airlines
  • 2X Bonvoy points on all other purchases
  • Marriott Gold status (but see special offer below)
  • Free night award
  • $300 credit
  • $100 property credit
  • $450 annual fee

Update: Offer no longer available

There are two reasons why you would want to seriously consider applying for the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant right now.

The first is that you can get instant Marriott Platinum status for 2021 with this card thanks to this limited time offer. (The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant normally offers you Gold status which is not worth nearly as much as Platinum.)

Marriott Platinum status is not easy to obtain (it requires 50 nights) and it is a solid elite status because it will grant you perks like free breakfast and guaranteed lounge access.

Here’s a look at all of the Platinum benefits:

  • 50% Bonus on points
  • Complimentary room upgrade
  • Welcome gift
  • Guaranteed Lounge Access
  • 4pm late check-out
  • Annual Choice Benefit
  • Guaranteed Room Type

The second reason to pick up the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant is that the welcome bonus is solid.

With this bonus, you will be able to earn up to 125,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. First, you will earn 100,000 points after you spend $5,000 in your first 3 months. Then, you will also be able to earn an additional 25,000 bonus points after your first anniversary.

Don’t forget that you also will get a free night that can be used at properties costing up to 50,000 points per night. Learn more on how to apply here!

Tip: Use WalletFlo for all your credit card needs. It’s free and will help you optimize your rewards and savings!

Below is a quick look at the award chart so you can see how far your points could go.

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless

  • 6X Bonvoy points on Marriott
  • 2X Bonvoy points on all other purchases
  • Annual Free Night Award
  • Automatic Silver Elite Status
  • Get Gold Status when you spend $35,000 on purchases each account year.
  • 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year
  • $95 annual fee

If the annual fee for the Brilliant card is too much for you then you might want to seriously consider the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless.

Update: Offer no longer available

Right now, the the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless comes with a pretty insane offer of five free nights for the welcome bonus. What is even crazier is that the free nights can be used on properties up to 50,000 points per night which means that you could effectively get up to 250,000 points for the bonus!

That is just unheard of.

We put together an article on Marriott properties going for 50,000 points per night and you will be pleased to know that you can stay at some very luxurious properties for that amount of points. These properties would include brands like the St. Regis, Ritz-Carlton, W, etc.

If you planned to optimize your stays at these luxury properties, I could see you netting easily over $1,000 in value from this welcome bonus with a potential of getting closer to $1,500 or more. Learn more on how to apply here!

Final word

We’re seeing some extremely generous credit card offers roll out every week it seems. These two Marriott offers are definitely some of the most noteworthy offers we’ve ever seen from Marriott. It’s pretty clear to me that the pandemic has caused hotels and issuers to get a bit creative and more generous so these offers may not ever return as things start to get back to normal.

Hot new offer for popular Amex travel card

The American Express Gold Card is the card that I rack up the most points with. It is definitely one of the best cards to keep for the long-haul but right now there is even more reason to pick it up because of the great welcome bonus that the card comes with.

Below, I will break down the offer and also give you a sneak peek at the new ranking system WalletFlo will use to help you instantly evaluate credit card offers!

The new offer

  • 60,000 Membership Rewards after you spend $4,000 in the first six months

This is a fantastic bonus.

Using a WalletFlo valuation of 1.75, 60,000 Membership Rewards comes out to $1,050. That is an extremely competitive offer for a travel rewards credit card.

The standard Gold Card offer available to the public is for 35,000 Membership Rewards after you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months.

So this new offer is a huge increase and the best public offer that we have seen. It’s not every day that you see a welcome bonus nearly double unexpectedly.

By the way, when the new version of WalletFlo launches (new mobile app) we will use an emoji system to indicate whether or not an offer is one of the all-time high public offers. This will allow you to quickly evaluate whether or not you should apply for an offer based on its bonus.

In this case, this new Gold Card offer would probably get the highest rating (unicorn) because of how drastic the increase is from the standard bonus (almost double) and because of the extended period for the minimum spend.

We are still figuring out exactly how to best describe the different credit card offer levels but here is a preliminary look at the rating system that will be used:

With the new notification system, you can set to be notified for only the best new offers (fire and above).

If you have any thoughts on the ranking system, let me know and we can consider those!

As mentioned, the minimum spend period has been pushed out to six months. With many people spending less due to pandemic conditions, this will give you more time to obtain that minimum spend requirement.

The Gold Card also has some fantastic bonus categories allowing you to earn 4X on dining, 4X on US supermarkets on up to $25,000 worth of spend, and 3X on airfare.

Tip: Use WalletFlo for all your credit card needs. It’s free and will help you optimize your rewards and savings!

The annual fee is $250 but you get a monthly dining credit of $10 that helps to knock that annual fee down to an effective $130. And in addition to that you also have a $100 airline credit which can further reduce the fee down to $30.

If you are putting even a moderate amount of spend on dining and groceries with this card, you easily come out on top which is one of the reasons why I am such a huge fan of it.

Eligibility

Because the Gold Card is a charge card and not a credit card, it is not subject to all of the American Express application rules like the 1/5 rule, the 2/90 rule, and the four or five card limit.

However, this card is still subject to the Amex once per lifetime rule which states that if you have ever had this card before you cannot receive the welcome bonus again.

It is also worth noting that if you had the Premier Rewards Gold Card in the past, the welcome bonus for this card will not be available to you.

If you want to automate the calculations for all of these credit card rules, you should check out WalletFlo which will help you optimize your cards and automate all of these things.

Final word

Overall, this is a great offer and would be worthy of the highest rating for WalletFlo. And if you spend a lot on dining and groceries, you will probably find that this card is easily worth holding onto in the long term.

New 100K Capital One offer

Offer no longer available

We’re starting to see a lot of new great offers roll out which is really encouraging for a few reasons.

For one, it’s now becoming easier to rack up more miles and points than it has been over the past six months.

And more importantly, it’s an indicator that things are slowly trending back towards a state of normalcy.

We still have a ways to go but we’re getting there.

With that said, the latest offer is a pretty big one.

You can now earn up to 100,000 miles when you with the new Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

This is a tiered offer.

If you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first three months, you will earn 50,000 miles.

And if you spend an additional $17,000 in the first 12 months of account opening, you will receive an additional 50,000 miles. Learn how to apply here.

Tip: Remember, from now until December 31, 2020, you can redeem your miles for eligible restaurant delivery, takeout and streaming service purchases.

The first half of the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card offer, 50,000 miles after spending $3,000, is a solid offer. It’s a pretty easy way to get $500 worth of travel expenses covered.

The second half of the offer obviously requires a significant amount of spend but you do get a full year to reach that goal so that is pretty doable for a lot of people.

Even if you’re not interested in spending $20,000 on this card in the first year, it could still be worth applying just for the 50,000 point bonus.

Tip: Don’t forget, that you can now also transfer your miles to various travel loyalty programs.

Finally, there is a message about eligibility that is new.

“Existing or previous Venture cardholders may not be eligible for this one-time offer.”

This new rule has not been programmed into WalletFlo yet and we also don’t have data points on if this will be enforced.

Notice that they use the word “may.”

So if you currently hold this card or if you had it in the past, be warned that you may not be eligible for this special offer. Learn how to apply here.

Chase Freedom Flex and new Unlimited now live!

Chase is now offering a new Freedom card (Chase Freedom Flex) and a revamped Freedom Unlimited. The new bonus categories on these cards are extremely competitive for a no annual fee card. You could argue that these are now the best no annual fee credit cards on the market for a lot of people.

The new cards:

  • Chase Freedom Flex
  • Chase Freedom Unlimited

Chase Freedom Flex

The new Freedom card is called the Chase Freedom Flex and that is replacing the Chase Freedom, which will no longer be available to new applicants.

The Freedom Flex comes with a $200 welcome bonus after you spend $500 in the first three months after account opening. $200 is a pretty solid welcome bonus for a card with no annual fee. Learn how to apply here.

You’ll also get 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases.

But the Freedom Flex is really going to stand out with its new bonus categories.

The Chase Freedom Flex maintains the rotating 5% quarterly categories but it’s going to get additional categories which include:

  • 5X on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • 3X on dining
  • 3X on drugstores

3X on dining is on par with the Chase Sapphirre Reserve — a card that comes with a $550 annual fee.

Getting 5X on travel through the Chase Travel Portal means you can earn 5X on purchases like airfare which is on par with the Amex Platinum Card, another card with a high annual fee.

So in short, these are very competitive bonus categories.

If you have a premium card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, you can transfer your point out to various travel partners. If not, you’ll just earn straight cash back such as 3% on dining, 3% on drugstores, etc.

The Chase Freedom Flex is going to be a MasterCard and not a Visa so you will also get additional MasterCard benefits like ShopRunner, cell phone protection, etc.

Tip: Check out the free app WalletFlo so that you can optimize your credit card spend by seeing the best card to use! You can also track credits, annual fees, and get notifications when you’re eligible for the best cards!

Chase Freedom Unlimited

The Chase Freedom Unlimited is going to better for people who don’t want to keep up with multiple bonus categories every quarter and would like to earn a straight cashback rate on all purchases. It will earn the following rates:

  • 1.5X on all purchases
  • 5X on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • 3X on dining
  • 3X on drugstores

The Chase Freedom Unlimited is also going to come with a $200 welcome bonus after you spend $500 in the first three months after account opening. You’ll also get 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases.

Strategy tips

  • If you are over 5/24 and you have the Chase Freedom then you will probably want to product change from the Chase Freedom to the Chase Freedom Flex. You can do this by calling the number on the back of your card.
  • If you are under 5/24 then you might want to consider applying for the Chase Freedom Flex.
  • You are eligible for the Freedom Flex even if you already have a Freedom Unlimited and or a Chase Freedom.
  • You can apply for the Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom Unlimited but you should probably wait at 30 days between applications.

If you do not know your 5/24 status, you can use WalletFlo to figure out your status.

Final word

It’s great to see some quality offers starting to roll in now. As things slowly start to get back to normal, I think we will be seeing more offers continue to come out so keep your eyes open for some great opportunities down the road.

New Chase Freedom card offers great rewards

There is exciting news from Chase.

There’s a new Chase Freedom card on the way and additional perks coming to the Chase Freedom Unlimited. These new perks are going to make the Chase Freedom cards arguably the best no-annual fee cards on the market.

There is going to be a new card called the “Chase Freedom Flex” (pretty cool name) and that is going to replace the Chase Freedom also informally referred to as the “Chase Freedom Classic.” (The Chase Freedom Classic will no longer be available to new applicants.)

The Chase Freedom Flex is going to maintain the rotating 5% quarterly categories but it’s going to get additional perks which include:

  • 5X on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • 3X on dining
  • 3X on drugstores

The fact that you’ll be able to earn these bonus rates is pretty huge.

3X on dining is on par with the Chase Sapphire Reserve — a credit card with a $550 annual fee. Also getting 5X on travel through the Chase Travel Portal is pretty amazing since it allows you to earn 5X on big purchases like airfare similar to the Amex Platinum Card which has a $550 annual fee.

Remember the Chase Freedom Flex has no annual fee.

The Chase Freedom Flex is going to be a MasterCard and not a Visa so you will also get additional MasterCard benefits like ShopRunner, cell phone protection, etc.

Note that if you are already a Chase Freedom cardholder you will need to call in to convert your card to a Chase Freedom Flex. (You can use the product change feature on WalletFlo to keep track of this.)

You could also just apply for the Chase Freedom Flex if you are under 5/24 since it is going to come with a great welcome bonus of $200 after meeting the minimum spend $500 in the first three months.

The Chase Freedom Flex is going to be considered a separate product from the Chase Freedom but if you product change to the Flex first, you won’t get approved for the Flex when applying for it.

Also, if you have the Chase Freedom Unlimited, you can still apply for the Chase Freedom Flex as long as you are under 5/24.

The Chase Freedom Unlimited is going to maintain the 1.5X on all purchases but will also get the additional:

  • 5X on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • 3X on dining
  • 3X on drugstores

In addition to those perks, keep in mind that with both Freedom cards you can also get 5% back on Lyft through March 2022 and a complimentary 3 months of DashPass.

Tip: If you feel like all of these new categories are a lot to remember, remember you can use the cheat sheet in WalletFlo to keep track of all of these things and it’s going to be much improved in the next version.

You can read more about the changes here.

The new Flex card and the new features for the Freedom Unlimited significantly upgrade the value of these no annual fee cards. I’m wondering if we will see a ripple effect with changes coming soon to the Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve.

The new benefits and new card will come September 14 so be prepared for this option in a couple of weeks.

U.S. Bank Altitude Go Visa Signature Card 25K offer

The U.S. Bank Altitude Go Visa Signature Card is a new credit card and perfect for someone looking to earn strong rewards on different types of dining purchases. The bonus on this card just increased and now it is a great card for people looking to earn some serious rewards while not paying an annual fee.

U.S. Bank Altitude Go Visa Signature Card

  • 25,000 points after you spend $1,000 in the first 90 days
  • 4X on takeout, food delivery and dining
  • 2X at grocery stores, grocery delivery,
  • 2X at streaming services
  • 2X at gas stations
  • $15 credit for annual streaming service purchases such as Netflix and Spotify
  • 0% Intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 billing cycles
  • No annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fee

Tip: Use WalletFlo for all your credit card needs. It’s free and will help you optimize your rewards and savings!

Welcome Bonus

The U.S. Bank Altitude Go Visa Signature Card offers 25,000 points after you spend $1,000 in the first 90 days and its an increase from the 20,000 point bonus offered before. Many no annual fee credit cards offer only around $150 worth of points for a sign-up bonus so the fact that you’re getting $250 is excellent.

Bonus categories

  • 4X on takeout, food delivery and dining
  • 2X at grocery stores, grocery delivery
  • 2X at streaming services
  • 2X at gas stations

The stand out bonus category here is 4X on dining and 4X on other forms of it like takeout and food delivery. Earning 4X on dining is fantastic, especially for a no annual fee credit card.

The other categories are okay but there are much better ways to optimize grocery spend with cards like the Amex Gold Card which earn 4X although they come with much higher annual fees.

$15 credit

You will receive a $15 credit for annual streaming service purchases such as Netflix and Spotify. Keep in mind that this credit only gets triggered after following “11 consecutive calendar months of eligible streaming service purchases” such as Netflix, Hulu, Apple Music.

It’s not the biggest or most valuable perk but it is an easy way to set your payment to get a free $15 off.

Keep in mind that some American Express cards are offering credits for streaming right now like the Platinum Card.

0% APR

If you are in need of a 0% APR., you can get a 12 month no interest period. Given how we are living through shaky times right now, this perk could be very useful for a lot of people.

Final word

Overall, I really like this card. If you don’t want to pay an annual fee but still want to earn some great rewards, it really is a fantastic option. And now that the welcome bonus is up to $250 in value it’s an even better and more attractive option.

Boost your stimulus fund balance with the right credit card

Let’s be honest, these are not the easiest times financially for a lot of people.

While it looks like another round of stimulus checks will be on its way in the next couple of months (and it might be even higher than expected), some people might need access to credit immediately and not have time to sit around and wait for the government to do something.

For these people, they should seriously consider applying for a Capital One card. But not just any card.

Tip: Use WalletFlo for all your credit card needs. It’s free and will help you optimize your rewards and savings!

The cards below are directed to those people who do not have the best credit so even if you don’t have a perfect credit score, there is still hope for you.

If your credit score is really not great (as in it is in the low 600s) or you have delinquent marks, you might consider going for the Capital One Platinum Credit Card. I’ve referred this card to people in the past with bad credit and have seen a number of individuals get approved.

Your starting credit limit might not be huge but it will be a start and you can begin to rebuild your credit report and build up your score by getting a card like this. Also, if you make on time payments after six months you might be eligible for a credit limit increase.

And the best part is, there is no annual fee for this credit card.

If your credit is a little bit more established such as in the mid to high 600s, you might consider going with a card like the Capital One QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards Credit Card. This is a really popular card and for good reason.

You’ll earn 1.5% back on every purchase which is very competitive for a cash back credit card. The annual fee is very low at only $39 as well. If you used this card to pay for the expenses you would use with $2,400 worth of your stimulus funds, you would net an additional $36 back, which almost completely offsets the annual fee.

If your credit score is really not in good shape then you want to start rebuilding your credit with a secured credit card. In that case, I would recommend that you check out the Capital One Secured Mastercard.

The cards above are not going to be the most flashy travel rewards credit card but they will set you up nicely to have additional credit in case you needed and more importantly, they can help improve your credit score over time.

At a time when things are pretty uncertain economically, it’s not a bad idea to have some credit to fall back on just in case, especially if you can earn some decent rewards like you can with the Capital One QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards Credit Card.

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless 100K Offer

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless is one of the best hotel credit cards. This is especially true when you can find it at one of its high welcome bonuses. Well, right now there is a new limited time offer for 100,000 points after you spend at $3,000 in the first three months.

Offer no longer available.

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless has a number of key features including the following:

  • 6X Bonvoy points on Marriott
  • 2X Bonvoy points on all other purchases
  • Annual Free Night Award
  • Automatic Silver Elite Status
  • Get Gold Status when you spend $35,000 on purchases each account year.
  • 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year
  • $95 annual fee

The limited time offer of 100,000 points is really nice. With 100K Marriott points, you could cover a couple of nights at Marriott brands like the Autograph Collection, JW Marriott, Le Meridien, Luxury Collection, and even at some Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, and W hotels.

Here’s a look at the award chart:

It’s often possible to get $200 or more in value from the anniversary free night which easily makes it worth paying the $95 annual fee. This free night can be used at any property that cost up to 35,000 points per night. There are some great properties you can find in this range and you should check out our article on the best Marriott Category 5 properties

It’s also nice to get elite credits each year they can help you climb up to higher elite levels.

New anti-churning language on Barclays card

It’s no secret — credit card companies have been actively putting in new measures to combat gaming in credit card rewards over the past few years.

And it looks like Barclays just added a new explicit restriction to earning its welcome bonus on the Frontier card and others like the Aviator Red.

If you look at the application page, it now states:

40,000 bonus miles after spending $500 on purchases and paying the annual fee in full, both within the first 90 days

It looks like the new change is that they are requiring users to pay the annual fee “in full.”

In cases where the annual fee is not waived, it usually hits soon after that first statement closes so the window of earning the bonus and closing your card is very tight.

So I’m wondering if people were paying only part of the annual fee and then canceling after that at some point? I honestly didn’t even know that was a possibility.

Barclays had language regarding paying annual fees in the past but it looks like they are reiterating paying it “in full” on certain cards. I’m wondering if churning was bad on certain cards they felt the need to add it?

It’s not a huge change but I do think that it is indicative of the focus that banks are putting on to prevent churning-like activity.

In this case, you can’t blame the bank since canceling a card right after earning a bonus is about as egregious as you can get when it comes to churning.
