Review: Hyatt Regency Dallas

I’d been wanting to stay at the Hyatt Regency in Downtown Dallas for a long time. As a native Texan, I remember finding this hotel visually intriguing on many of my trips to Dallas so I was excited to finally experience the hotel. Here’s a review of my experience.

Booking

I made the booking for this hotel with BonWi.com and earned over 40% back on the stay, which was pretty incredible. BonWi is a new OTA that offers exceptional rewards for bookings so I’d recommend you giving them a look when planning out your next hotel stay.

Location

The Hyatt Regency is located on the edge of Downtown Dallas near the Trinity River. It stands right next-door to Reunion Tower and also Union Station, which serves several rail lines and the DART light rail system. This makes the Hyatt Regency a convenient place to stay if you have any kind of business to take care of in the Downtown Dallas area.

If you’re just visiting Dallas I recommend making your way up to Reunion Tower to check out the views at sunset. You’ll be able to get some great shots of the Dallas skyline, too. To read more about photographing the Dallas skyline click here.

Check-in

Our check-in was on a Friday around 5pm and it was super hectic!

There were so many people lined up for valet parking and coming in and out of the lobby it was an absolute madhouse. There were obviously a few events taking place at the time, as I noticed what looked like large groups of show bands pacing nervously through the hotel. It was absolutely packed.

However, the staff we dealt with at this time was phenomenal. We had some issues with our booking and they did everything that they could to rectify the situation. They apologized over and over to us and assured us they would do everything that they could do to fix the situation.

After the somewhat chaotic entry,  we made our way up to our room.

The Hyatt Regency Dallas underwent a whopping $50,000,000 renovation in 2013, which was needed for this nearly 40 year old hotel. The hotel still definitely has a retro feel to it in the atrium due to its design, but the lobby, corridors, and rooms have been nicely renovated with nice modern touches.

The main lobby area is unmistakingly Texan, with a large beveled star forming the centerpiece. Around this area are the restaurants and cafes, which also got quite busy during peak hours.

I’ve always loved large atriums in hotels and this one was nice, too. The noise can certainly build up in the atrium, although it never was an issue for us when we were inside of our hotel room.

We ventured up to one of the top floors of the atrium to check out the views and we could see directly out to Reunion Tower from the top.

The room

The re-designed rooms of the Hyatt Regency Dallas are very nice and pleasing to the eye. We had a king bed, which was ultra-comfy.

The headboard comes with abstract designs and two lamps, along with back-lit mood lights that give off a glowing appearance behind the headboard.

On the other side of the room is the TV and desk areas. There’s more ambient lighting behind the metallic “river mirror” which is an artwork created from an abstracted image of the Trinity River. The art piece and lighting take what would be an otherwise uneventful room and provide it with interesting features.

If you examine the mirror up close you can see the fine details in the map. I’m a big fan of large hotel chains integrating local-inspired art work into their designs and decoration and Hyatt did a great job of this throughout the hotel.

The rooms come with a lounge chair on one side of the bed, which is a great for reading or for watching TV.

There’s also a beautiful chase lounge chair that’s placed next to the window where you can stretch out.

We were placed on the 7th or 8th floor (I can’t recall) and had a decent view of the Dallas skyline, which is actually one of my favorite skylines in the US. Although I enjoyed having the view, you may want to consider taking a room without the skyline view because the trains can be very loud. It may not be an issue if you’re one of the upper floors, but it became pretty annoying for us throughout the night to hear horns blowing.

The bathroom

The renovated bathrooms are very sleek. They’ve got back-lit mirrors with horizontal striped patterns on the top and bottom of the mirror, which give of an ultra-modern or even futuristic look and feel.

Facilities

We didn’t have much time to check out the facilities of the hotel  but we did make our way down to the Italian restaurant in the lobby known as Parrino’s Oven.

The service in the restaurant was over-the-top. We were the first guests there once they opened and they treated us like royalty, it was almost weird how good the service was but we still enjoyed it. While there, we tried the grilled chicken pizza cooked in a brick oven and it was excellent.

There are more places to eat at the hotel which you can read more about here.

Although we weren’t able to check out the gym we did make it out to the rooftop pool area to give it a look. To be honest, the pool area is just sad, mostly because it’s just so tiny. There are some lounge chairs and a couple of cabanas up there though so it wouldn’t be a bad place to relax outside on one of those cool Texas afternoons in the fall or spring.

While you can’t see much of the Dallas skyline from the pool area, there’s nice view looking up to Reunion Tower.
