American Express Application Rules (2/90)

Opinions, reviews, analyses & recommendations are the author’s alone, and have not been reviewed, endorsed or approved by any of these entities.

The application rules for American Express are pretty straightforward for the most part, but they require you to be familiar with the different policies between charge cards and credit cards and to always keep tabs on your total opened accounts.

Here are the current American Express Application rules, including the 2/90 rule.

Will Amex combine hard pulls?

Amex (or more accurately the credit bureaus) can definitely combine hard pulls for multiple applications.

The only issue with this is that it doesn’t always happen. I’ve applied for multiple Amex cards on numerous occasions and each time the hard pulls were combined. However, there are data points out there where applicants were hit with two hard pulls. If I had to guess, applying for two charge cards probably makes it more likely for a combined hard pull than applying for two credit cards, but I can’t tell you what Amex will do for sure.

As an interesting aside, existing Amex cardholders will usually not incur a hard pull upon an application rejection. Unless Amex detects a significant change in your credit report, they will usually only conduct a credit check using their own internal credit check system and deny you. And in some rare cases, existing Amex cardholders may not even incur a hard pull upon being approved

The Amex 90 day rule:  No more than two credit cards in 90 day period

The Amex 90 day rule does not allow for you to be approved for more than two credit cards within any 90 day period. Remember, this rule applies to credit cards, not charge cards. Some people are lucky enough to get around this rule and get 3 credit cards in 90 days, but I think those people are outliers.

There’s actually no strict limitation on charge cards, although I’d probably try to limit charge card applications to 2 per 90 day period but not more than 5. Just my personal recommendation.

No more than one credit card application per day

American Express application rules typically (though not always) limits you to one Amex credit card approval per 5 business days.

This is an automated fraud-prevention feature that Amex uses and it will usually apply whether you’re applying for personal or business credit cards. As far as I know, there’s no way around this besides getting lucky. Typically, your second application will go to pending for 3 to 5 business days and then you might be automatically approved or receive a rejection and need to call into reconsideration.

So you can get approved for two Amex credit cards at the same time. The problem is that the week-long processing period for a pending application can sometimes result in two separate hard pulls. More on this here.

Multiple charge cards

On the other hand, you can definitely apply and be approved for multiple charge cards at the same time. I’ve heard of people being approved for up to 4 charge cards at once. However, the maximum number of charge cards that I would apply for at once is two, because it’s not uncommon for Amex to hit you with financial reviews if you quickly open 3-4 new accounts.

Four Amex credit cards total

One of the American Express application rules that is very clear is that you’re only allowed four total Amex credit cards at any given time. I’m not aware of anybody getting around this rule so this is a must-follow in my opinionUpdate: it appears this rule has become more lax as many have been approved for 5 credit cards but just remember YMMV.

This rule applies to both personal and business credit cards so there’s no getting around it that way. However, the good news is that if you are an authorized user on an Amex card, that will not count against you for purposes of this rule.

Unlimited charge cards?

It’s a tad unclear if Amex has any limits on charge cards. Some state that the rule is four total charge cards but there are several data points showing others getting approved for more than four Amex charge cards. I would personally try to keep it at four or five and only apply for additional cards with the expectation that you may very well be denied.

And again, I’m only talking about charge cards right there. That means that you could have a total of at least 9 Amex cards (5 credit cards and 4 charge cards).

Bonuses are once per lifetime

One of the most important American Express application rules to know about is the once per lifetime bonus rule.

This means that once you earn a sign-up bonus for a specific card, you can never earn that bonus again even if you cancel your card and reapply. And now, this rule even applies to business cards. There’s no distinction between charge cards and credit cards with this rule, either.

Note: In practice this “lifetime” language sometimes does not apply to people who received a bonus 7 or more years ago, but YMMV.

There are only two potential ways around this rule.

Difference in sign-up bonuses

One way allows you to capture the difference in bonus points between your original sign-up offer and a later sign-up offer that you meet. For example, if you met the sign-up offer for 40,000 Membership Rewards for the American Express Platinum in 2013, canceled the card, and then met the sign-up offer for 100,000 Membership Rewards in 2015, American Express would grant you the difference for your second bonus: 60,000 Membership Rewards. This is a pretty controversial method that appears to be dying out (if not already dead), so I don’t recommend it.

Targeted offers

Another way around the this rule, which is the only true exception, is to jump on targeted offers. This method is still YMMV, but it’s a way to get a bonus for a card for a second time. I would suggest checking the terms and conditions of the targeted offer first to see if the sign-up bonus is limited to new cardholders. If it’s not, then you at least have a basis for making an argument with Amex that you deserve the bonus.

So, in conclusion, you should ask yourself the following three questions to make sure you’re not violating any Amex application rules:

  • Do you have a total of five Amex credit cards? If so, you cannot apply for another credit card (but you can still apply for a charge card)
  • Have you opened up more than two credit cards in the past 90 yes? If so, you cannot apply for another credit card (but you can still apply for a charge card)
  • Have you ever been given the sign-up bonus for this card before? If so, you probably will not be given the sign-up bonus again (subject to the above exceptions).

  1. Hello, if I apply for Amex everyday card a few days ago and want to apply for the charge card today. How this scenario is going to be? Will the credit pulls be combined since it’s only been a few days ago? Thanks

    1. More than likely those hard pulls will not be combined, since you generally need to do the applications within the same day.

      1. Hey I have a question I’m first timer to Amex haven’t apply yet but I was curious about the qualifications how many accounts u have to have on your credit to get approve for your first Amex card I have 1 credit card it’s a cap one card been open for 5 years now never late credit utilization is 8%

        1. Any don’t have no negative no collection a clean perfect file no inquires just that 1 account that’s open for 5 years

    2. I just called customer service and applied for the Amex green card feb 09 2017,got approved, then went online and applied for the everyday credit card and got approved also. And that was all with 1 hard pull!

        1. Also, like a week later after I apples for those 2 cards,I turned Around and got approved for another Amex card: the blue cash everyday. So that’s 3 cards In less than 2 weeks! I think what made me get approved for the third without a financial review is the fact that I used both of the 2 cards, then turned around right after using them and paid them off as soon as I used the cards!

  2. Hi, I am just wondering what you would recommend form me, I am looking to apply for 2 charge cards and 2 credit cards. What method or order would be best in your opinion?

    1. I would apply for 1 charge card and 1 credit card at once and then after 30 to 60 days, I would apply for 1 credit card and 1 charge card again. You could apply for them all at once and possible get approved but I wouldn’t. The reason is that you might get financial reviewed since there are reports that applying for 3 or more cards at once sometimes “trips” the system to initiate a financial review. I know several people who have gotten 3 cards at once no problem (2 charge, 1 credit), so it’s just a matter of whether or not you want to take the risk of a FR, however small it might be. As for applying for all 4 once, the same worry for FR applies and you’re pretty much guaranteed to have one of those credit card apps to go to pending. If the latter happens, you might have to get on the phone w/a rep and explain why you’ve applied for 4 cards at once which probably won’t go over too well. Thus, I’d stick with the 2 apps now and then 2 apps maybe 30 to 60 days later, so that you only come out with 2 inquiries and minimize your odds of having your account flagged. But you can also be more aggressive than that if you’re more of a risk taker.

          1. Hello, I just wanted to get your opinion. I applied for an Amex Green Charge card last 2/22 and was denied because my trade lines have not reached 6 mos. My mistake, because I should have waited for at least a week when March 1st came, I was able to view my Fico score, which I was not able to do the week prior. But I was not aware that it was what they needed, I based my application from my current Credit score from my bank app which I am an existing Secured card with. My current Fico 8 score per Experian is 742, Annual income is 34K and a clean record. When I got the denial, I called Amex a week later to have it reconsidered and last Wednesday they declined me again, claiming that a Supervisor reviewed my application and decided to abide by their original decision. When I populated the Denial letter online, the date did not even change, so it seemed like they just outright denied my application. I did mention to them that I am totally fine if they did another credit inquiry so I can justify that there is now a score that can be obtained if they requested for it again. But didn’t seem like they even bothered to review it. How long should I wait before i try again

          2. You could always call back and try recon one more time. If that trade line your oldest account? If so, I’d let it age another 3 to 6 months before trying again, and I’d probably try for a card like the Amex EveryDay that might be a little easier to get on board with. It sounds like your score is solid you just have limited credit history?

  3. Hi, I just chatted with Amex and even tho I had the SPG card years ago and cancelled (I didn’t mention that) but the agent checked my record and said I WOULD qualify for the bonus. Was he misinformed or think I’ll get the bonus?

  4. I got an offer in the mail for a AMEX card. I am rebuilding my credit. Does AMEX always do a hard pull for !st time applicants? How much will this affect my credit score? Thank you

    1. Amex will almost surely do a hard pull on your credit report even if you end up getting denied since you are a first time applicant. Typically, a hard pull will only drop a score 2 to 5 points but that drop will usually diminish after 60 to 90 days. You can read more about hard inquiries here

  5. Last Friday, I applied for an Amex Personal Gold via online and got instant approved. After couple hours, I tried applying for a SimplyCash credit card (online too) but got the “we cannot give instant decision right now, wait for 10 days” response.

Do this usually mean what you’re stating above that they just delay the application but will get approved down the road? I wish they won’t do a HP again to my score, although at TransUnion 777, I think I can take one more hit if it comes to that, but if I can avoid it, why not.

    1. The delay I talked about is related to two credit cards apps at the same time and you have one charge card and one credit app at the same time, so it’s a bit different. The delay could’ve been caused by submitting 2 apps close together or because it was a business card. Have you called in to see if it was just a security measure? You could also wait it out, but either way your hard pulls should be combined (although I’m not sure the pulls will be on TransUnion).

  6. This isn’t correct. I (and my friend) both applied for the SPG biz and personal in the same day and were approved. We applied over a year apart, but he just applied in April of 2017. Don’t think this info is correct at all

    1. There are exceptions to getting two credit cards at once, as I stated “As far as I know, there’s no way around this besides getting lucky. Typically, your second application will go to pending for 3 to 5 business days and then you might be automatically approved or receive a rejection and need to call into reconsideration.” The vast majority of data points support the second credit card application going to pending.

  7. Daniel, I applied and got approved for the Amex everyday card AND the Amex green charge card. My ultimate goal is to get approved for the Amex platinum card. What is the minimum time I should wait to apply for the platinum? I really want it asap. Thanks

    1. Are those all of your Amex cards? How long have you had them? It sounds like you have a good credit score, so you might be able to go for the Platinum Card now since there’s no restriction on the number of charge cards. Even if you got denied, there likely would not be a hard pull and you could always try again in the future.

        1. ….anyway I ended up getting approved for the platinum card. Now I’m wondering f I should close my amex green account?

  8. Hi there – thanks for this post! Quick question for you – I have had the Amex gold charge card (Canada) for about a year. I applied for the Amex SPG card about two years ago and was denied, so not sure how I got the gold one.

Anyways, was thinking of applying for the SPG one again – would you say there is a point in trying that, or would I likely be declined again as I was declined a couple of years ago?

    Thanks!

    1. So I don’t know much about Canadian Amex cards but if it works anything like the US, waiting that long to re-apply should be plenty of time to give you another shot at the card. If your credit is in good shape, I’d go for it.

  9. Hello, my question is about 2 weeks ago I was approved for everyday card how long I have to wait to apply for another credit card i interest for blue cash card

    1. If you were approved for the EveryDay card two weeks ago, and you don’t have any other recent Amex credit cards you’ve been approved for, you should be good to go with the Blue Cash Card.

      1. Well hello, you were right I applied for the blue cash credit card after two weeks later of my first approval and I was approved, the credit line wasn’t that much as the every day card the initial credit line is $11000, now I’m very happy to be part of the Amex family, you think if I call to customer service and ask for an increas they my consider or not, I will appreciate your pront respond
        Thank you

        1. Congrats! You can always try for an increase (you can request it online, too). In my experience, Amex can be stingy with immediate credit increased — often you need to give it some time and maybe show some spend on the card. It doesn’t hurt to try since there will not be a hard pull but you might have to end up waiting a few months for the increase.

          1. Hello, this is my case a year ago I applied over the phone and before to proceed with the application I told the agent that in my credit report will show up a BK and it was discharged 6 years ago and she respond there are many customers they applied with BK and they was approved after I heard that i felt confident to apply for and I was instantly approve with a very nice credit line of $11,000, now explain this a year later i request an incease and I was dinied then I call for a recon and they told me that in my credit report shows a BK and I said really but when I initially applied for the cars in my report shows the BK and I was approved and he told that between applying for a card and request an increase are different factor but that was not the answer I want to hear and that’s it, any idea what happen here
            Thank you.

  10. Hello! I applied for a Premium Rewards Gold card on 8/27, but was having second thoughts and canceled it the next day. After more thinking, I decided I would like the benefits of the card so I reapplied and was instantly denied. I’ve got good credit, so why was I denied the second time? Also, if I am able to be approved again at some point, will I be able to get the bonus since I never even used the card in the first place?

    1. Hi there. So I take it your first app went to pending and you called in to cancel it? Have you tried to call Amex reconsideration to get another shot at an approval? Since you didn’t receive the bonus the first go around, you will be eligible for the bonus.

  11. hi …Daniel..in april 5th i got approve 2 amex credit card ( blue cash card and spg card both limit $2500 )
in same day ..until today i think is around 5 months later , should i go online to increase my credit line for this 2 amex card in same day ????

    1. I’ve never tried two credit limit increases at the same time. It’s worth a shot, though. If it works out let me know!

  12. So I have a bit of a dilemma on my hands. About a four weeks ago I applied for the AMEX Platinum for which I was not instantly approved, and just assumed I was denied. Being that I recently paid a lot of debt off I figured I would try my hand at another platinum card a couple weeks later, so I applied for the Mercedes-Benz Platinum, and was approved. Today I received an email that I was approved for the first Platinum card and I do not know what to do. If I cancel the second card (actually the first applied for) will I be ineligible for the bonus in the future, despite the fact that I haven’t “received” the bonus?

    1. That’s a good question. Multiple Amex reps have told me that you would NOT be eligible for the sign-up bonus even if you did not receive the bonus the first time you got the card. I know some people have gotten around that but I don’t have enough data points to know the % of people who have. It could be really low or could be high. Also, sometimes Amex denies bonuses when people open up multiple types of Platinum Cards so they might be more prone to using that against you in your case. My advice would be to just try to meet the sign-up bonus for both cards since there’s no guarantee you’ll get another shot for your original Platinum Card bonus.

    1. Amex will sometimes offer express shipping but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a new card overnighted. Amex will instantly give you the credit card number for some cards but you’ll have to ask them to see what they can do for you. YMMV depending on the specific Amex card.

  13. Hi. Daniel how r u…
I have an amex platinum charge card.. Can I change this amex platinum card to amex credit card ??

  14. Hi Daniel
    quick question.
I have applied for Amex gold card on August after getting RSVP code on mail which comes with 50k bonus points on meeting 3 months 2K spend. Not sure why but as of 25th Sep I got the RSVP again with 50K points.
So is this a mistake from Amex . If I apply again with new RSVP is there any chance of rejection or they will approve but I will not get another 50K points.
Appreciate if you can throw some lights.
    Thanks

    1. There are different data points out there where some people have been approved for the same card twice but I know that Amex has not allowed others to be approved. Even if you are approved, though, you will likely not get the second bonus even with a different RSVP, so I don’t think it would be worth it to apply again.

  15. Hi Daniel
I have the business gold charge card, and the preferred blue credit card personal. Only had for about 1-month and decided to apply for the business Simply cash credit card, got the message will get decision in two weeks, checked the status on line and it says declined at this time. Should I call the reconsideration line?Is it worth it

  16. Hi Daniel .I applied for the platinum Amex card was not istanly approved while the card was in progress i applied for a business plantinum charge card and got denied in 30 sec. Now i have a platinum amex card that i was approved personal and i would like to apply for a Amex Credit card blue .
Is it to soon to apply for a credit card?

    1. You might be good to apply for another credit card, but I sent you an email to get more details on your situation.

  17. AmEx cancelled all three of my cards which were in good standing with no late or returned payments. They were cancelled because a charge appeared from my business that was the result of my computers being hacked. I provided them with all the necessary documentation to clear my name but to
no avail. I was told, however, that I could reapply. One of the cards has actually been paid off. How long should I wait before replying?

    1. This is a tough one. If they told you that you could re-apply, you could always give it a shot now and see what happens. This doesn’t sound like a “true” shutdown given the circumstances of the hacking, so I doubt you would have to wait as long as others who get shut down for shady activity. If you’re not approved now, I’d probably give it a 6 month waiting period. But again, this is a very odd situation and I don’t have much data to draw from. Keep me updated on this.

      1. I provided the police reports and all of that. Acct. Review said there seemed to be “inconsistencies.” They also received “Affidavit of Fraud/Forgery” as well. I tried the app yesterday, and they brought up the cancelled accounts. The activity happened back in December. I have stellar credit so I guess maybe waiting six months would be best.

  18. My question is I had 3 Amex CC two of them almost a year old the third one about 5 months old, when I’ be applied for the first time I did it over the phone and before I continued with the application I told the agent that I filed for BK about 6 years ago and I never had a Amex CC then she told me that there are customers that applied with BK and been approved, when she said that I felt confident applying for it and she was right, Amex approved me with a nice credit line of $11,000 I was in shock, now explain this a year later I went to the website and I request a credit line increase and I was dinied I called for a
recon and they told me I was dinied because in my credit report shows a BK so I said wait a minute when I had applied for that credit card I had approved with no problem and now I can’t have a credit line increase and the agent told me there are different factors between applying for credit card and applying for credit increase so that was his answer but he didn’t explain the factor why??? Do you have an idea why is the differents
    Thank you

    1. I could be that credit limit increases just require more stringent criteria. I’ve been denied CL increases before without any good reason and then have been approved for new Amex cards. I agree that it doesn’t seem to make much sense, especially in your situation.

  19. Hi Daniel,
It’s all about Canada Amex FYI. I’ve applied for Amex Gold in May 2017 and Aug 2017, but both got rejected. The second time was Global card transfer, and they told me it’s auto rejected since I’d have to wait for 6 months to re-apply.

It’s now almost 6 months, planning on doing another global transfer at the end of Feb. I assume they don’t consider my current credit score, but if they do, I might have problem getting approved since my score isn’t quite good.. Any suggestion?

    Thanks!

  20. I got a pending status on AMEX Everyday card since they want to verify my income. I am waiting for the period to end, which is 90 days. If i applied on November 12, 2017, should i be able to reapply on Feb 12, 2018? or is it Feb 13, 2018.

    1. Did you ever get approved for that card? If that was your only Amex credit card you went for, you are good to apply again now.

      1. They never replied with a declination or approval, so I’m just gna wait out the 90 days and apply today, hopefully I’ll get approved this time

          1. So the rule is that you can’t get more than two Amex credit cards within a 90 period, so you’d need to wait until the 91st to apply. I’d still try to inquire with Amex about what happened to your other app, though.

  21. Hi Daniel,

I was recently approved for the Amex Blue cash Card about a week ago and I tried to Apply for the Everyday AMEX But was denied due to the approval of the Blue Cash Magnet card…Was this because I didn’t wait at least 91 days? Also will this action be a hard pull and effect my credit in anyway? Please advise, thanks.

    1. Did you apply for them on the same day? If so, that was the problem. You should be able to get two credit cards within 90 days.
